It's more comfortable, but I'm not the biggest fan of the button orientation.
Yeah I've never tried the dogbone controller, but the button orientation always looked odd to me. Maybe it's fine when you actually hold it?

It's almost as bad as the Game Gear button orientation.
Am I supposed to have a giant thumb that's mashed between the two buttons and then just kind of roll over the one I want to use?
Using an SNES controller as reference, I can hold Y with the tip of my thumb and use the base to tap B for running jumps or what have you. I can't really hold B and tap A at the same time unless I move my hand around and up the controller into a really dumb position. I don't really get it.

As hard as it is, I really enjoy Getsu Fuuma Den.
In addition, Gradius II is a must have for any shooter fan. The game is spectacular.

I haven't really had any problem with the dogbone so far. If anything, the only thing that trips me up sometimes is that it feels so much like an SNES/SFC controller that I'll find my fingers reaching for non-existent shoulder buttons on occasion.

The dogbone controller's big failing is that it doesn't have turbo buttons. For that reason, I'd much rather use the NES Advantage or the NES Max controllers; turbo is extremely useful in a lot of games!

I won this yesterday. I'm very excited to play it and I didn't think I'd actually be able to get it at this price with the manual. My question is how much value do you think the manual adds to the game? I don't plan on selling it but I find it fun to know the worth of my collection.
Wow that is cheap. Congrats. As for the manual, they usually aren't worth THAT much unless it's a really rare game. Then it might be worth more than the cart. It's more often the boxes that are worth more than the game itself if they're in good condition and not the manuals so much. But in this case I could see someone paying $10-$15 for the manual. I'm not an expert though.. but that's what I'd pay.

I figured boxes were where the money is at. I'm actually tempted to spend the $60 to complete the game. I don't know if I could justify to my wife that spending that on a piece of cardboard makes sense lol.
I just didn't know if there was some sort of protocol with collecting where like an NES game would be worth x% more with a manual as long as it's not something like Jack Nicklaus Golf.
It is worth a little more, but generally not very much especially if the manual is sold together with the cart. If you sold the manual by itself you'd get more for it obviously. Since it's a relatively rare or at least saught after game the manual will be worth more than average. The manuals for more common games I've seen sold by themselves go for around $1-$5 or so, usually in the lower spectrum of that range.
Regarding boxes, unless it's in pretty good shape (meaning no pressure damage, no scuffs unless minimal etc) I wouldn't bother. Of course we're all different but I just hate seeing rough/beat up boxes. It's just such a shame and the ones I have are a blight on my collection really. I get depressed when I look at them lol. That's one of the bad things about these paper boxes; they are so very easy to fuck up.

I just got an email saying I was refunded. At first I thought he was giving me my money back so he could list again but in the message he said he accidentally set his shipping too high (it was $12) and he gave me $7 back. I'm happy as can be to get Gargoyle's Quest 2 and manual for $33!

was browsing Amazon for NES controller extension cables and saw reviews for one that were very hit and miss. Does anyone use controller extension cables & if so, any particular ones you'd recommend?

I have a Raspberry Pi that appeared to emulate NES and SNES smashingly from what little I tried. I gotta think something with slightly more horsepower or care would do even better.
Went to a local gaming expo and I picked up Vice: Project Doom.

^preach! finally played that & Wrath of the Black Manta a while back, and loved them both. Vice gets hard but its so good, still high on my want list (its not expensive but i gotta find shit cheap right now haha)...great call though man

Finally took an extended amount of time to sit down and play Little Nemo today. I've only been able to get up to the toy train level so far, but man is this game charming. I wish I would have played this a lot more when I was younger, I'm sure I would have adored it. Trying to figure out what animal power to use when and where makes things pretty interesting. Playing this and then looking at modern day Capcom kind of bums me out a bit.
Most likely going to get Akumajou Densetsu and Gargoyle's Quest II this week. Can't wait to play 'em.

^nice! waiting for my ebay bucks in october, thinking ill finally grab MM1 (been meaning to anyway, but might no 9 rebuffed it, heh). any chances of finding it there for less than $40 you think?
Its always possible, sure...but dunno if its very likely. Even Rockman 1 has gone up.
Of course you might get lucky for one with rental stickers or something, since mint seems like its stuck around 40.
I still kick myself for not picking up MM1 when I saw a minty cart for $30 years ago, thinking that it was too expensive... I have 2 and 3 CIB in pretty good condition though, so I also kind of wanted MM1 CIB instead of cart-only, but I don't think I'll be able to justify that nowadays. =/

Yellow Devil, and yeah, i've got the jump pattern down...but mashing the pause button after hitting with elec beam works so much better.
The next boss, the bubble bots or whatever, are so much easier. You could take them down with just the blaster.
Speaking of Konami FC exclusives, anyone have any other suggestions?
I haven't played them but both King Kong and AI Senshi Nichol looked interesting when they were covered on Chrontendo.
I do have King Kong 2 actually and it is indeed an excellent game. It's a pretty early game though, but considering that fact it's still a surprisingly deep and a fun experience. It's also very cheap and seems to be one of those games they produced a ton of cartridges for, so if you don't have it pick it up! Also has music by Kyohei Sada of Contra fame.

Little Nemo is fantastic. I gotta say I found Gargoyle's Quest II to be a little disappointing. Probably rate it the lowest of the trilogy.
Mega Man 1 was my second NES game, got it for my birthday the March after I got my NES for Christmas. That was 1988, good lord. Still have the manual but the box went in the trash long, long ago =[

That almost happened to me when cleaning my NES awhile back. Man that would've sucked (its the same NES I got for my fifth birthday).
On that note, I need to make an effort to check out garage sales more often. Add it to my usual rotation of checking thrift stores and flea markets.
With Halloween coming up, I think everyone retroside (system regardless) should pick one "creepy" themed game they've never finished, and attempt to beat it by the 31st?

hell yeah, ive been thinking we should do a thread! i have Sweet Home just waiting for the last few weeks of the month, and was sitting on Corpse Party as well. was debating SNES Clock Tower but that'll be next year i think.

I finally have a way to play NES stuff on my monitor and have it look great. Im running my Wii with component into my pvm, running Mednafen, and forcing 240p in the emulator. The games look awesome. It will work until I get an RGB AV Famicom in the future. This is a much better solution for me than the Retron because A. I can run it into my pvm with component and B. 240p. Its emulation, but it looks exactly how I feel an RGB nes would look.
PS. I also played through LoZ in about 2 1/2 hours with no deaths. Im pretty sure thats my first no death playthrough.

About a year ago, a guy doing some work on our house mentioned he had a box of old NES stuff and offered to let us have it. We took it - and it was really gross. There was one NES that wasn't stained, and that I cleaned up, and two that were just nasty. A few loose games, including both Zelda gold carts, so overall I was happy with it. (Though someday soon I'll get a toaster NES, a PPU, and get it modded...) Anyway, I put the rest of the box, which had several folders in it, away in storage. It was just...yucky.
Today I decided to flip through and see what was there. Found the first issue of Nintendo Power, several game map/tip posters, the LoZ tip guide, both Zelda instruction manuals, and a complete copy of a game called Anticipation that I have never heard of. Bottom of the box even has a copyright for "Rare, Ltd." Anyone ever heard of it before? Edit-Edit: Heh. There's a small wikipedia page for this game, and it must be fairly common given it seems to go for like $2.
The paper stuff is mostly too grimey to want to touch, but still fun to see Nintendo Power #1 after all these years.
