NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Huh. I've only beaten the Japanese version of this game and the ending with Sypha is a bit different, as in
Sypha's hood is off to reveal a ZOMG female!

Post some pics when you get the mod finished. I'll be keeping a close eye on how this turns out.

I definitely will! Ill probably bump this and post some pics in the crt thread. Hopefully ill have them here in about a week/week and a half.

Havent been this stoked in a bit. This, PS4, and the fact i think my gf got me an rgb turbo duo and turbo everdrive for my birthday wed, has me overloaded with cool stuff.

I remember playing Guerilla Wars on NES when I was 5 or 6 years old. I still have the music playing in my head.

Heh, I used to think that in order to get a continue, you had to press all the buttons repeatedly, and sometimes you'd trick the game into giving you more lives..

Later, I realized you get infinite continues, and can choose to continue playing upon dying. :p

The first console I ever owned (Probably for a lot of people in here as well?)

I remember the list of games I got too.

Let's disregard the obvious pack in of Super Mario Bros (Not a duck hunt bundle)

The other 5 games I got were

Hoops

Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers

Double Dragon

and Monster Party

Eventually I would discover some of my most favorite games on the console were River City Ransom, Castlevania 1, Megaman 2, Crystalis, Guerrilla War, Super Mario Bros. 3

I've never played it, but I remember comments about its great visuals around the time of the release. It really put the NES through its paces in that regard.

Zen isn't that easy to find unless you get it online, but I'd definitely like to get it... looks good for sure.

I have the Game Boy Zen game. It runs in the same engine as the first two GB Ninja Turtles games, so it's a basic platformer/beat 'em up. Short, easy game, but entertaining for the very short time it lasts. The NES game is clearly considerably more ambitious.

Zen is pretty interesting. Somewhat challenging like Bucky O'Hare <Konami, comic based game> a lot of it due to the isometric stages. The side scrolling stages feel like Strider in a way. Solid game overall though.

Would the JP version work on an NA NES with a converter? Or is that one where the sound chip wouldnt work properly?

You have to modify the nintendo itself by bridging a 47k ohm resistor between 2 pins (cant remember where exactly), and the converter also has to be modified to get the extra channels from a cart.

My NES is getting the region free fix in the same job to install the NESRGB (and stereo, etc), so that's taken care of, but what's this about the converter?

I have a Hogan's Alley cart with converter coming in (finally caved and bought one on ebay after examining multiple local carts and coming up dry - and as a side note, it's hilarious how many listings on ebay only advertise "five screws" and don't show the internals). So that won't work for this cart without modification? How difficult is the mod?

Famicom games have 60 pins and NES games have 72 pins. You'll need an adapter to use games for one on the other.

Right, that's the Hogan's Alley cart - it has one of the 60 to 72 pin connectors (I'm planning on sawing off the top of the cart to make a nice adapter, I don't like the game genie method).

But I understand Baph to be saying that you have to *additionally* mod the connector to run this specific cart. I am misunderstanding that?

Thoeretically i suppose it would be possible to do the mod without modding the converter, but i dont know for sure. Ask the gametech if youll be able to get expanded sound with the mod and if anything will have to be done with the convertor. I know you get the expanded sound by just modifying the console if youre using an everdrive or powerpack. Im under the impression to get it off the cart you have to modify the convertor too.I havent done much like that for the nes so im not sure what everyone does for them.

Thanks, just did some searching and found this thread.

Seems like a lot to go through just for one cart. Not going to chase that particular rabbit down the hole...yet. ;)

Chase the rabbit and peg it now before it goes up in price some more *lol* I love cranking up the bass on the game, it's fantastic.

I was also crazy enough to get Lagrange Point, even though my Japanese skills are lacking. I can make it through a lot of the game but it's a slow process with lots of dictonary referrals and things.

There's some FDS games I also want, so I'm leaning towards a Sharp Twin Fami over modding a US NES anyway. Definitely interested in J CV3, is it expensive? D=

So I have a question for you guys.

I have a top loader and I love it. Problem is, the RF connection on the TV I have doesn't work great and I'd like to connect it via composite but as you know, the top loader does not come with composite out.

I'd like to do this without modding the system. I looked up RF Demodulators but they are expensive and I'd like to avoid spending over $100 to do this. I was wondering if something like the below would work to convert the signal to either composite or component. The current tube TV I'm using has both types of inputs(it's not an hdtv, just has a component input).

Personally i'd check Nintendoage.com to see if someone there might be able to do a nice but affordable mod for you.

Thoughts on Contra Force anyone?

Something like that might work, but its still going to be rf quality, so not good. If you decide you want an rca mod done you can pm me.

On Contra Force, i think its really bad compared to the other Contras. It has really good music, but just awful slowdown. Considering how much it goes for, id say pass.

Is there a better way to buy Fami games than eBay? They skew so high there compared to shops like ami-ami.

I guess what I'm asking is are the eBay prices for games like CV3 and Adventure Island 4 representative of what they cost in Japan?

People are starting to receive their NESRGB boards. Someone posted up a few pictures of his running on a pvm. It looks really damn good even though his video quality is kinda shitty. Ive been watching the mailbox like a hawk even more than i usually do -_-

Has anyone played Zen the Intergalactic Ninja? I have been listening to the soundtrack (thanksbasedkonami) and wondering if it's worth picking up. The character is pretty rad looking.

It definitely looks and to some extent plays pretty technically impressive for an NES game, and it may even be the best-looking Konami game on the system, but it is really hard. Since it's isometric with jumping, trying to guess how the game is going to handle the depth of an object or your character is pretty taxing (have you played Landstalker?) when the game is already quite difficult.

I was thinking about getting a couple Famicom cartridges on ebay for a friend's birthday but I need a good way to display them. He's always been a big Mega Man fan and I thought it'd be cool to get him Rockman 1-6 in their original Famicom form. But I need some way for him to present them. Is there a good way to frame them, or display them together? Any help is appreciated.

I finally checked these guys off my list, just came in a few days ago...

Since you guys were just talking about it, Contra Force sucks. I was really appalled by it, played for maybe 10 mins and I doubt I'll ever play it again... maybe once more to show to my buddy who loves Contra, but it is just dreadful.

Mighty Final Fight on the other hand is a blast and the only gripe I have with it is that it's one player only.

Also, I just wanna throw out a little shoutout to my BST presence here on GAF, I'm constantly getting doubles in as I try to fill in my NES collection so I'm always getting new carts to sell off. Just won a very exciting lot that I'll be parcelling out in the next few weeks, more on that when it gets here.

I wonder how Contra Force would have been received had it not had the Contra name attached to it.

Its kinda like Silent Hill 4 in that aspect isnt it?

EDIT: Kinda funny that we brought up both, and they were already on the way to your place lol.

Got New Ghostbusters 2 (Famicom) a couple of days ago. It's developed by HAL and is a very fun and solid game! Not to be confused with the other shitty Ghostbusters games.
