Netflix in talks to buy HBO's studios and HBO Max streaming platform

If this happens, this would be a huge shakeup of the industry. HBO still has the highest quality TV shows. I don't know if Netflix buying it would change anything, but Netflix's series are shit compared to HBO and they pump out too many. The Witcher for example and how badly that series was butchered by using amateur creators with no vision.

I don't know what, if any, changes Netflix would make to HBO's studios if this deal goes down, but if it goes down and they do, that's probably a wrap for HBO.

Warner Bros Discovery.

Warner Bros, HBO, DC Comics, and dozens of other properties.

99% of their IP could become streaming only like it is for Netflix's releases, and managed by SF ideologues. Nightmare fuel.

Yup. I hate it. 100% hate it. I still buy home releases. Netflix doesn't do those. I'm just fucked.

I already sigh and shake my head when Netflix licenses an anime I'm looking forward to because I know I'll never be able to own it. Now I have to hate that I'll never be able to own a WB film or series again.

Instead of needing 10 separate paying subscriptions to watch everything via streaming, we'll only need 9 now.

Hollywood is not happy.

A consortium of top industry players have sent an open letter full of alarm to Congress, describing a potential economic and institutional meltdown in Hollywood if Netflixsucceeds in its effort to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery.

My real concern is that they're going to keep going back and editing old movies to fit "modern sensibilities". It's obvious already that anything new that Netflix creates is going to be shit, but now they're going to have a huge catalogue of IPs to retroactively ruin.

Where does that leave HBO MAX as a platform? In the UK, we're supposed to be getting MAX sometime early next year. If Netflix buys WBD, does Max just not exist and all the content move over to Netflix?

I'm not a fan of this idea at all. As you said, it most likely means most of their IPs become streaming only on Netflix, but also you just know Netflix will ramp up the subscription fees as well.

I hate this.

Have they done that before?

I read that Netflix revenue was higher than the worldwide box office total last year.

It's sad to think about how good TV was 20 years ago. Now it's all made on the assumption the viewer is barely paying attention anyway.

Just seeing how princessified Star Wars got under Disney shows how much the owner actually affects the studios it buys. I really don't want to see HBO under the Netflix umbrella.
