In a first deal of its kind, Netflix and the Weinstein Company said Monday that they planned to release next year’s sequel to the movie “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” simultaneously across the globe on Netflix and a select number of Imax theaters.

The film, a follow-up to Ang Lee’s Academy Award-winning martial arts drama, is the first major motion picture to make its debut on the streaming service and in movie theaters at the same time. It will be available on Aug. 28 at no additional fee to Netflix subscribers and is the first of several films that Netflix is backing that will follow this new model for release. Only Imax is involved; other theater chains will not screen the film.

Now when are they going to make a page for Netflix Originals on their site...

It seems ridiculous that the only way to find the super premium stuff they've made is a wikipedia list of their originals.

I always kind of worry when something so old gets a sequel/follow up. It'll have been 14 years between movie releases. Sin city for comparison was I think 9 years

Here's hoping it's good

wow

I don't think I can describe my reaction any other way at this point in time. It seemed like the movie covered just about everything it needed to. Should be interesting where they go with sequel.

I don't think I'll bite without Lee on board. I think Crouching Tiger was practically perfect and I think it works well as a standalone.

there's a government computer making these decisions

I'm pretty sure Netflix uses their movie recommendation engine to decide what movies and shows to make. Like "Hmmm, people seem to really like shows with properties X, Y, and Z...let's make a show about a women's prison. That checks all the boxes." I bet the popularity of Archer and Bob's Burgers on Netflix is the reason they made Bojack Horseman. It's all in the algorithm.

A sequel being done 15 years later without the original director sounds like it would be a straight to VOD deal anyway.

I'm guessing the Sin City box office aided the Weinsteins in their decision.

YESSSS, Netflix can now do movie reboots. Let's reboot the Matrix sequels. Only the sequels though, the first movie is perfect as is.

They said the reason they're making the Marvel shows is cause The Avengers movie and superhero cartoons are huge their viewers.

I couldn't get past the first episode of Bojack though.

The thread title is misleading. Netflix isnt "making" these cthd movies. These movies were already being made. I believe netflix is just going to be releasing them on netflix the same time as their theatrical release. CTHD was supposed to be a trilogy I think. Based on some books if I recall.

I wasn't remotely interested until I saw Donnie Yen. Definitely on my radar now.

Donnie Yen's in this?

Eh I burned out on the Chinese wire-fu movies years ago. Interesting nonetheless.
