Netflix is raising prices for new members ($1-2 increase, not every region)

Netflix is about to get more expensive, but only by a dollar or two. In his company's Q1 letter to shareholders, CEO Reed Hastings said, "Our current view is to do a one or two dollar increase, depending on the country, later this quarter for new members only." Hastings then noted that existing customers will be able to stay at the $7.99 monthly rate "for generous time period." (The company says it experienced "limited impact" after it hiked prices for new members by $1 in Ireland.) Raising prices will allow Netflix "acquire more content and deliver an even better streaming experience," Hastings said.

Update:

"We want to get this done well, and make sure we grandfather people cleanly," said Hastings. That decision to grandfather current rates means the higher pricing won't have a huge influence on Netflix's bottom line for some time. Hastings said it will be "quite modest in the short term." Netflix may also experiment with new tiers beyond the core price bump, according to Hastings. "We're continuing to look at that," he said.

The company says it experienced only "limited impact" after hiking prices for new members by €1 in Ireland. In that case, Netflix promised current customers that they'd be grandfathered into the cheaper plan for two years. But it might not stretch so long in the US. "We’ll do between a year or two," Hastings said, revealing that Netflix will reveal more specifics at a later date. Raising the monthly subscription fee will help Netflix "acquire more content and deliver an even better streaming experience," Hastings said. An $8.99 or $9.99 price would make Netflix more expensive than Hulu Plus — which costs $7.99 per month — but Hulu still annoys its paying customers with advertisements.

I feel like Netflix's selection is pretty weak. I'm currently not a subscriber for this very reason.

I'd gladly pay $10 a month if it meant a much better selection.

Oh no, pay $10 a month for getting to watch what you want, when you want, or $200 a month for 200 channels of shit programming.... god Netflix, so expensive.

So you're saying they should raise the price to $200 a month?

Who the heck is paying $200 a month for 200 channels? We're paying like $60 a month for like 400 channels

Anyone who wants HBO on Verizon or NFL Network on Comcast.

They hold certain stations hostage unless you buy into their 150 dollar plans, then it's equpment fees, rental fees, etc etc, it doesn't take much to get you to 200 a month.

I'm at 185 a month now and I want to cancel everything and start fresh with another company.

No I'm saying people are complaining that Netflix is expensive.

Comcast is $140+taxes+fees+surcharges +box rental, for 200 or so channels, so yes, $200 fucking dollars

I pay 65 for direct tv with NFL Network and HBO....if they increase in price I'll just cancel it, it's barely worth it with the crap selection they have now anyways.

If I wasn't paying a promotional rate, I'd be in this camp.
Once the decent promotional rates expire, you're better off moving to an expensive tier with a promotional rate than with a lower tier at full price. It's nuts. I'm paying 120 now for Comcast triple play, because Comcast Internet+TV without promotion is in the ballpark of 150, due to the higher tier of Internet service I use personally and for work.

i pay $89 for that with internet on Comcast, sounds like the poster is terrible at finding any kind of deal

Don't tell Netflix, but I would pay $20/month for their service. I can't believe it's only $8 still

yeaah after paying a life of dvd's, renting movies on blockbuster, paying an absurd amount of money to cable providers, stupis dvr's without 5.1 and a long list of bullshit payin 8 buck for netflix fells like a steal.

I love netflix and dont have enough time for all the series and movies i want to watch.

What aboot Canada eh?

Considering how shitty our selection is, I would only pay more if they improved it. Otherwise, they'd better leave Canadians alone for once.

Give me the second half of S7 of Doctor Who and we can call it a deal, Netflix. Pay off the BBC, since we don't have Prime here in Canada.

This would be a great opportunity for them to re-merge the streaming and disc plans. Sadly, they won't. Still one of the best values in entertainment though,

42 million worldwide subscribers * $2 increase = $84 million increase in monthly revenue = $1.01 billion increase in yearly revenue

That small increase really adds up.

Would honestly pay more if I had to. At 30 bucks a month its still a great deal considering the amount of use I get out of it. I of course would expect more content with a price that high though.

Their streaming selection is pretty anemic. Their flagship original series pretty much shit the bed in season 2, and Arrested Development continuing is doubtful at best. I don't regret cancelling and I doubt I will ever re-up if they don't change things quite a bit. Seems like a very awkward time to raise rates.

Europe already has to pay more because of the $8=€8 ($11) currency conversion. Please leave Europeans alone.

I'm also letting netflix expire this month because the selection is pretty bad in Finland and now even mediahint requires a fee.

Off course it does since they need to pay comcast for 'better network quality'.

They pay Comcast less money then they already paid a 3rd party to carry traffic to Comcast. So... prices should go down i guess?

Its because content contracts have been rising considerably from their original prices before anyone knew that streaming would become as huge as it is. 9.99 is still a fantastic price

395 channels of which suck major balls, from my many cable experiences.

This is what i'm saying, if it was high quality channels it would be a different story, but I watch like 3, and all the rest is filler, and you cant get those 3 unless you get the expensive package, they know what they're doing, evil corporations..

Except for the part where the increase would be for new members?

Watch out Netflix & the studios that are putting pressure on Netflix.

This isn't the 90s, where people had no other option but to pay cable companies whatever.

If Netflix raises it's prices too high, and selection doesn't improve, consumers might start to feel they are getting ripped off rather than getting a deal. At that point a large portion of people will likely just pirate stuff and not care, similar to what happened with the music industry already.

That said I don't think a $1-$2 increase will do that for most people.

I have the highest plan on AT&T for that $60 a month.

Yes, I'm not getting the various sports season packs or whatnot, and I'm not getting any movie channels, but other than that.
