Netflix The Witcher Discussion

It does actually make me feel physically ill. But I can just not look at it so don't feel compelled to change it on my behalf lol.

I'm only mostly done with episode 4. I'm enjoying it so far, it's not mind blowing or compelling me to watch it all at once though.

The woman that plays Yen is really pretty.

Seen 5 episodes. As a fan of W3 I love this. Calanthe and Eist are great. Geralt is great. Yen is tolerable to me but Triss was miscast I think.

The show was much better than expected. A more serious "Merlin". Geralt casting is bang on. Cavil is a fan of the games and is a gamer himself. My only gripe is there could have been more monsters. There is also too much unnecessary nudity and gore, it's trying to be like GoT but it really doesn't need to.

Incidentally, the complete Witcher game with expansions if on sale for $20 on Xbox Live ($15 if you have gold). I never played the expansions, and since the X version has 4K and HDR I think I'll pick it up again and be less of an ass to Ciri so I actually get a decent ending.

Dina Meyer still looks gorgeous as hell 25 years later. I was surprised to see her in the show.

She looks amazing for her age.

edit: NVM, it wasn't Dina Meyer lol but just an actress that looks a lot like her.

Just finished episode 4. As the games player and books reader I’m simply in love with the show! I just feel sorry to anyone that’s watching without having any background on The Witcher. They’re literally thrown out there in the middle.

S01 was pretty good, confusing at times, specially between episode 3 and 4.

As someone who only played The Witcher 3, the series made me want to read the books and play the first two games.

Think they did a great job, and Henry Cavill nails it as the Witcher.

Not a perfect series but I enjoyed it for the most part (was a lot better on the second viewing). I would have imagined that for non-readers/gamers it would have been a bit inaccessible but apparently it's been madly popular so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Forced diversity is a bit of an eye roll, but it is what it is these days, and it if is required to get stuff like this made then so be it. I'm not going to lose sleep over its inclusion.

Agree that Triss is the weak link. Thorough I think she has less of a role in the books versus the game,. Presumably, when they hired her they were thinking long term so maybe it will all shake out in the coming seasons in terms of performance.

Also, the Show has had a mad boost on both Book sales and in people (re)playing the game. Apparently more people were playing it on Steam the other day than even at launch

Hoping Season 2s clear success translates into a bigger budget as the CGI wasn't amazing I know the dragons aren't supposed to talk according to the book canon, but just hearing the voice was kind of dopey

Also curious to see if Entertainment Weekly intend to do anything about their Critics shitty conduct. I dare say it generated a lot of clicks, but let's be honest they tanked their collective reputations in the process.

Show was goddamn amazing. Even my wife, who hates fantasy stuff and despises GoT, loved it and was bummed it ended so abruptly. Must be sexy Henry. How is it getting such average scores?

After the finale on Saturday I immediately redownloaded Wild Hunt and bought the expansion.

I've only seen chapter 1 so far.
Was pretty good, I think Cavill does a good job as Gerlat and the action scene towards the end was great so I'm looking forward to where this is going.

Some of the writing was kinda bad and I'm not sold on the visuals though, but let's see how it goes on

After attempting and failing to play TW3 at least 3x (the beginning never grabbed me) I finally soldiered on past the beginning and I am loving the game now. All because of the Netflix series. I ended up watching it 2x now and the slight confusion is gone. Now that the 3 stories are converged it should be more accessible for season 2.

the show is lame

its kinda ironic see mages in a litle boat trying to get in time at the castle when they used and abused of portals in previous episodes

also ironic the old fella that was a dragon hire a witcher do defend his egg, when he can simply fly and burn everyone

Were both of those logical issues in the books?

I just finished watching this and loved it. Cavill did a great job and I really like the actress that played Yennifer too. Triss is a weird casting. I need a season 2 now.

I want to start reading the books now that I finished watching it. Looks like every place around here is out of stock and even Amazon has a couple week delivery.

Honestly I didn't actively dislike Triss in this show if I ignored all context from the games, it was adequate for what the character needed to be at this point in the plot. I would appreciate getting her hair right though, and they can come up with a reason to do it given the events of Episode 8.

Also fuck people calling for the actress to be replaced or anything (I've seen it elsewhere on the internet), I thought she was miscast personally, but it's done, and the actress didn't do anything wrong.

So you wanna tell me that you know where they are, who’s all those characters, and “law of surprise”?

They introduce the characters to you. The Law of Suprise wasn't hard to understand. I did look at a world map online. That's pretty common for most fantasy series though.

Honestly, I expected non-gamers/readers to be confused. For all its positives (Dat fight), I don't think the first episode adequately explained what Renfri's plan was regarding forcing Stregabor to come down from his tower and why Geralt had to intervene, but apparently people were quite happy to roll with being a bit confused and figure matters out later.

Nice to see showrunner Lauren Hissrich keep up the good fight and continue to promote Netflix's woke agenda.

Ploughing 'ell. Can't these people not post their political crap online just once?

What is actually objectionable about what the Tweet says exactly? I hate to state the obvious here but seeking asylum isn't actually illegal. People seek Asylum all the time. You're conflating the word illegal, with "illegal immigrant", which is a different matter entirely.

She's boasting about their writer's room about having a diverse range of political opinion when that picture says otherwise.

And I find it tiresome whenever a Hollywood creative feels the need to share their politics on social media as if it were a badge of honor. I don't give a shit about about their politics. The work they put out is all I care about.

Seeing Asylum not being illegal isn't a political opinion, it's a legal fact for most Democracies. I already explained that you're confusing the use of the word 'illegal' by assuming the statement somehow relates to 'illegal immigration' which is an entirely separate matter. Julian Assage wasn't an illegal immigrant when he sought asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

I liked how Henry Cavill played his role. Sometimes he does prince charming mimics but you can't expect him to be cold as Geralt like in games. Imagine someone tries to make a series about Mass Effect Andromeda and think about how tiresome it would be for the lead artist's face. Maybe he is a charmer in the books, i didn't read them.

Other than that, it is 7/10 for me. I liked first few episodes but later on just watched it because i had nothing to do better and wanted to see how it ends.

It's like watching season 3 of Stranger Things, after season 1-2(~Witcher 3).

Apparently people want Mark Hammil to play Vesimere, and Hammil chimed in saying he doesn't know anything beyond the 1st season, but he's in as far as he's concerned.

...............do it, do it, do it, doit, doit do it do it do it doit doit doit doitdoitdoitdoitdoitdoit!!!!!!!!

No you can jump right into the show.
I'll second this. I didn't know shit about The Witcher universe before watching Season 1, and while to took a few episodes to understand the multiple timeline I caught on quick enough. I would recommend watching the 1st 3 episodes over after you finish the season for anything you missed.

Then I would recommend you read the 1st 2 books, they will provide you with a lot more context to a lot of scenes in the series.

The big complication is how sentimental the show is in comparison to the books.

The problem is that America has no problem in the way it treats asylum seekers. The obvious intention in the picture is to signal their disdain for Trump, I doubt the fate of ‘asylum seekers’ troubles them much at all outside whatever clout the topic may get them on social media. It’s distasteful.

I like Mark Hamill, but honestly, I'm not sold on this being a good idea in large part because the dude isn't getting any younger (70 this year). The series could potentially run for a good few seasons but I'm not sure how up for it Hamill would be in the long term, plus when you're dealing with someone that old, you can forget any actual stunt work on their part.

I've already pointed out Horace's misinterpretation of the subject twice, but apparently doubling down regardless is the way. Still, Twitter BS? Who honestly gives a shit save the lost and the damned? If you find the notion of writers rooms likely being more left-leaning than right and that's too much for you to handle, you probably want to burn all your media consumption right away, because pretty much all screenwriters come from Liberal Art backgrounds. I mean what are you hoping for a political diversity staff quota?

You're definitely not wrong, but nobody able to do their own stunts is going to satisfy the internet for that role. I think the only thing you need to worry about is casting actors who can work till season 7 or so, which admittedly would be a concern for Hamill.

Damnit I want to see Old Man Luke in a respectful role though.

I get the yearning, especially after Johnson did the dirty on him in TLJ, but I kind of feel this is sort of akin to the whole 'Idris Elba as Bond' debate whenever people talk about a replacement for Daniel Craig. Elba is almost as old as Craig. Sure, dude is awesome and has real presence but if they were going to cast him, they needed to do it when he was early to mid-30s not when he's close to 50. Casting directors need to think in the long term.

Who knows. Hamill may happen, and it might work out, but I couldn't help but feel his involvement would invariably result in some Star Wars references getting thrown into the show and frankly I'm opposed to that sort of meta BS (the QT shoutouts in TW3 were sad as fuck tbh). Unfortunately when your writers are inclined to throw in the modern phrase 'reverse psychology' into what is ostensively a medieval fantasy show ('Mind games' would have been less jarring Jaskier) you're not dealing with the best and brightest.

You have to admit though, a little quip from Geralt going, "It's good to see you still command a modicum of respect," when they first meet up on the road as Vesemir collects a bounty would be a little cathartic.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for from your entertainment at the end of the day. As someone who bailed on the new Star Wars Trilogy after TFA I'm not really interested in seeing this show become an avenue for Stunt casting. I mean if we are going to go down that route we might as well throw Sean Bean into the mix.

If Sean Bean can die well as a character that I have not seen yet from 2 hours into book 2 (episode 6 in season 1) then I'm all for it.

BTW I don't disagree with anything you say, I'm just saying that I'll go full-fanboy If Hamill is cast.

Netflix sucks. Jim Henson already adapted The Witcher in 1988. :messenger_winking_tongue:

I just watched the full of episode of this. The fairy tale Hans my Hedgehog was no doubt Sapkowski's inspiration for writing the story of Duny and Pavetta.

Heh heh, I dont think you understand how The Witcher works :p

The short story collection is nothing but repurposed fairy tales.
