Netflix The Witcher Discussion

Heh heh, I dont think you understand how The Witcher works :p

The short story collection is nothing but repurposed fairy tales.
I'm well aware of that. And I'm kind of pissed that Netflix didn't adapt the rest of the stories and muted the fairy tale connections with the ones that they did. Renfri didn't even mention that she shacked up with seven gnomes.

I've watched the first couple episodes and liked it quite a bit - love the brutality. Cavil is a great Geralt. It's also kind of interesting to see how much it's blown up despite media outlets shitting all over it and still releasing articles like "this is why the witcher is not good!". Reminds me of those people that will go into a gaming thread and argue with someone who likes a game about why they shouldn't like it.

The media can screw themselves. That one review by that clown show website where they admitted to watching the first two episodes, then skipping to episode 5 and then stopping there to give it 0/10 was pure stupidity.

I love the show, I’m so happy it’s been a huge hit with both viewership numbers and user scores across the internet. I can’t wait for the next season.

Apparently many "critics" watched only 5 episodes before writing the reviews

Just finished Season 1 last night and I absolutely loved it. I'd go as far to say as I like it as much if not more than the Mandalorian. Leaning towards more adult content and having the shows run a full hour felt like you got more meatier of a story whereas sometimes the Mandalorian felt over too quickly.

Between Stranger Things, Mandalorian, Witcher, and Star Trek Discovery all my favorite shows in the last couple years are streaming-based.

Witcher knocked it out of the park for the first season. Was everything perfect? Of course not, nothing is. For example, the queen (and other humans) should have looked noticably older in the "present" than they did in the past. Witchers and sorceress don't age, fine, but the Queen was just a human (AFAIK?). Henry Cavill is MVP, he is phenomenal in the role and helped to offset some of the casting choices I've not been too keen on. I found Ciri was great as well, looking forward to seeing more of both in season 2.

I find it fascinating that professional critics still have a job in this age of easily available audience feedback. I almost never agree with what a "Critic" says. I'll be glad when the last of these blowhards is out of a job.

Also, I have a feeling between the books, games, and show, "The Witcher" could end up being a Household "name" in a few years.

CDPR really needs to release a "The witcher" trilogy on next gen consoles with all 3 games in it. Witcher 1 is actually a pretty fun game despite its bizarre combat.

Critics have a value based on the consistency of their opinion. If I know a critics' track record, their review can help me to gauge quickly if it's a movie or series for me or not. It's not the point that I would agree with everything the critic says, as long as they can explain why they like/dislike the movie/film/toaster/whatever. If you read reviews for affirmation of your own views you're doing it wrong.

I simply don't value the opinion of one person. Has nothing to do with what that opinion is or how "Professional" they are.

I like to look at the aggregate of public opinion and then decide for myself. If the audience thinks its shit I generally will think it is shit and vice versa. Rarely does my opinion deviate much from what the general audience thinks. Critics are all bought and paid for anyways.

Interesting, I'm exactly the other way round. I don't give a flying shit what the general audience thinks. I value the opinion of friends and a select few individuals over an aggregate value derived from silent masses. And if you don't trust critics, why do you trust random usernames that can be bots or bought themselves? I thought it was old news that there are a number of companies in the business of paying people for good reviews of various goods and services.

Not using random user names. I am looking at the aggregate from hundreds of thousands of reviews. Are some bought? Yes, but the overall percentage is less than the "Critics". I have found for movies I have very mainstream tastes.

I'd like to clarify that I don't consider a lot of "influencers" critics. The people I don't respect are the dinosaurs, many of which work for old print media companies, that are completely out of touch. Basically if you consider yourself a "Professional Reviewer" I could give two fucks about your opinion, because anyone who thinks having an opinion about movies makes them a professional has their head so far up their own ass that they cannot see the sunshine.

After attempting and failing to play TW3 at least 3x (the beginning never grabbed me) I finally soldiered on past the beginning and I am loving the game now. All because of the Netflix series. I ended up watching it 2x now and the slight confusion is gone. Now that the 3 stories are converged it should be more accessible for season 2.

I couldnt get through the first 10 hrs of W3 because the story and lore was so convoluted. The series definitely made everything click for me as well.

Watched it all in one hit. I enjoyed it. Cavill was always the goto guy for this role.. Appreciate his lowering of his voice to be similar to the games character.. 11 on 10. Will watch more..

Dina Meyer still looks gorgeous as hell 25 years later. I was surprised to see her in the show.

She looks amazing for her age.

edit: NVM, it wasn't Dina Meyer lol but just an actress that looks a lot like her.
I was about to be like what the literal fuck that is her?

I really enjoyed it. The first episode is a bad first episode and feels like it should be an episode 2 or 3.

As far as I’m concerned there is no episode 1, they skipped it. It’s probably worth watching the first episode again after you figure out what’s happening

I wouldn't say it's bad, it's potentially a little incoherent for people unfamiliar with the books or the games. The sword fights were top-notch though. Still, apparently people watched it on mass and liked it so ..*shrug*

The dragons were dodgy looking... Very cheap looking cgi.

Agreed. From what I understand they stuck with this idea that Dragons communicate telepathically from the books, but tbh they didn't sell it all that well

Looks like Freya got lip filler...

It's just makeup dude. She's been in the wilderness in the show, not much time to apply some lippy out in the woods.

I thought the first episode was brilliant for basically just being a filler episode about the Witcher being who he is and how he gets treated by the general public. Having watched the whole season a couple times I wouldn't change a thing with episode 1.

My only gripe with the dragons is the human voice talking through the dragon. I was really confused(drunk) the first time watching it and couldn't figure out who the dragon was until I went back.

I read that his co-workers said that he slept in Geralt’s uniform to stay in character. That’s dedication

Will judge myself when I start watching
Anyone else cringing at his facial gestures? He's not facially expressive, but at least he looks and sounds the part.

Damn, that first episode was goooood.

And so was the 2nd episode. My biggest complaint is how long it's taking to get that damn "Toss a coin to the Witcher" song out of my head.

I finally was able to catch the first 3 episodes. I really loved it. It isn't perfect, but it is way better than I thought it would be. I have low expectations from Netflix Originals. I feel they do a good enough adaption of the books and I can't wait to see the rest. I am hoping they can keep up the momentum for the rest of the season and would love to see more seasons of the same quality. Henry Cavill is great as Geralt.

Anyone watching season 2? This show has made me realise I'm now numb when seeing boobs on tv, I've seen so many already they just don't seem special anymore.
Yup -- just started it earlier today. So far so good. Watched the first 2. Love it. I think the first ep was better than the second, but the second was still solid.

The show is decent when they can borrow elements from the books but is at its worst when they make up their own story. The writers are genuinely terrible and lack the talent that made the book or games a success so it all comes off as bad fan fiction. It's just like the Witcher animated movie where the sacking of Kaer Morhen is portrayed in an absurd fashion.

I think season 2 brings in the worry that the show won't make it to the end as the showrunner exploits the ip for all its worth. It starts well with Nivellen portrayed by Kristofer Hivju but then slowly goes downhill from there.

Given where they are in the story by the end, the board is set so that Season 3 should be borrowing heavily from the books.

I don’t put much faith in that new prequel show they’re doing though.

It definitely gets better from episode 4 on.

It reminds me of an R rated Xena/Hercules. That’s not a bad thing.

Almost done with episode 6. Cavill does a believable Geralt and grows on you fast. His swordsmanship choreography work is well done.

Sir, I am going to give this shit a go because you're backing it. Just letting you know...

Henry Cavill makes the swords look like miniatures. Just give this man a claymore 😂 it will normalize the size. Watching him talk about it on the Graham Nortan show with Tom Holland and he makes the chair look like a booster seat and makes Tom Holland look like he just turned 6 years old.

Anyways, finished two episodes and it's already shaping up to topple s1 so far. Had me saying oh shit when seeing the a specific area.

Marked improvement in production values this season, coupled with no timeline jumping means I'm enjoying it more. Season 2 looks to be a banger and I'm only 2 eps in.

indeed it really is fantastic. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's say Game of Thrones level but it's massively improved. I feel like I am immersed in the world from the books and it's a great escape from the real world right now.

Finished season two with a resounding "meh".

Felt so bored during so much of it. Every time they cut to two people staring at each other intensely for a conversation while other more interesting shit is happening I just sighed. It's getting too Game Of Thronesy. Might as well rename it to "Mages: Actually Just Politicians Who Can (But Aren't Allowed To) Cast Fireball".

hah, opinions eh. Your cons there are why I loved it so much. Too good!

Nice to hear the production values are no longer basic cable tier.

whaaaaat? I thought she did a great job. And shes super hot..

Taste and opinions I guess but she looks like she is in her late 30's early 40's and the actress isn't even 30.

Why were they funny about the mushrooms and Ceri? Did they give her psilocybin?

It is a reference to the books. The mushrooms and herbs are there to enhance Ciri's training results but Triss is worried the Witchers haven't considered (which is true) how it impacts a pubescent girl.

He doesn't need sword. He should go with bare hands.

Apparently this season deviates from the books and a lot of hardcore book fans are pissed about it. Not sure how much since I've only played the games and didn't read the books.
