With Netflix's first theater-ready film, Beasts of No Nation, content chief Ted Sarandos broke a long-standing company rule not to reveal viewing numbers. "It is worth sharing that this movie, in North America alone, has over 3 million views already," he told Deadline. Netflix racked up those figures in two weekends, and the Cary Fukunaga directed film, starring Idris Elba, was the top Netflix movie in its first week of release. The service helped it along with a strong launch, though. "We focused on making the film available to all 69 million Netflix subscribers around the world, in more than 50 countries," Sarandos said.

Beasts of No Nation has been marketed as a prestige film, so Netflix always intended a theatrical release to allow it to qualify for the Oscars. However, it was boycotted by four US cinema chains, angry the film was available online the same day it hit theaters. It did see a limited art house release in the US and UK, though, and received critical raves, scoring 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Sarandos added that it was Netflix's number one film in countries "where these (types of) films typically never even open," including Japan, Brazil and Mexico

Top 3 movie of the year for me personally. It's not for the faint of heart or any looking for some moral fairy tale shit.

Honestly, that's probably better than the best-case scenario of the amount of people seeing this movie in theaters. Its long, harrowing, stars an unknown child actor, not much of the way of marketing. I guess this really worked out for them.

Saw it and its devastating. Friendly tip, dont watch it just before you go do bed. :(

Netflix are doing amazing stuff with their series. DareDevil, House of cards, this, Narcos etc.

I read "breasts", but was happily surprised anyway. I knew Netflix was launching movies but I had no idea any were on the horizon. Love me some Idris.

ERMYGERD!
Want to see this, but I need to be in the right mindset first. The trailer was fantastically brutal, so this isn't one of your "let's pop a brewski and watch a movie" flicks. Maybe somewhere this week.

Good l. incredible movie that really sheds light on the struggles and injustices of that country.

There was no sugarcoating at all

3 million doesn't seem like that much to me. I guess it's a super high number for Netflix?

Consider that there are literally 0 white people in this movie, or American accents for that matter.

Fantastic film. Definitely the modern day heart of the darkness.

The child actors for both Agu and Stryker deserve a lot of praises... and noms.

Very good movie, hope that Netflix continues getting the rights to first run films of this caliber.
Netflix could make a killing in niche material and fan favourites. Netflix series are already known for high quality and the will and the bravery of being different to standard fare.

If only they picked up Hannibal.

Attah was my favorite out of the bunch (including Elba), but Emmanuel (Strika) was excellent too. Incredible considering he didn't speak.

Gave my girlfriend nightmares. I'm Nigerian so I kinda knew what to expect going in. Some of the scenes were still very harrowing. Fantastic get for Netflix, need more.

Really enjoyed this film. Hope that it continues to see success, and that Netflix does more original movies.

Yeah top 3 for me too

It's like a not as good apocalypse now set in Africa, though that comparison alone puts this over like every war movie since thin red line/private Ryan

Fukunaga did good

I honestly didn't know this was a movie. I saw it advertised on netflix and thought it was a documentary that was likely going to depress the shit out of me so I passed on it lol.

I thought it was a very provoking movie and incredibly well acted by Elba and the lead.

Still, it felt a bit disjointed to me.

It was a great movie, even with the pacing issues caused by the production problems. I think it was awesome that Strika was able to convey different emotions without saying a word. He did it so well. I felt bad for Two-I-C, though.
