Netflix's Live Adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho

I'll try to watch this if it ends up being decent. Japanese productions are usually lower budget, but tend to be more faithful to the source material. Don't know why people are complaining, when it's just shonen anime. Modern cgi is also good enough where we don't have to resort to only recreating realistic storylines.

Wonder if they'll whitewash.
It's a japanese production so don't worry about that. I bet it's probably going to be like Bleach's at best.
Honest question: How many live action adaptations of anime actually ended up being good?
I can only think of three that atleast look descent. Speed Racer and that's because it didn't take itself seriously at all and embraced it's wacky over the top nature. I think Battle Angel Alita's was OK but I never saw/read the source material so I can't compare it. Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken's also looks fine but that's because it's a Slice of Life series entirely grounded on reality.

The problem is that in live action they try to emulate the anime looks. Some anime have amazing plot, that could make great movies or tv shows if adapted well, but when you watch something which characters look that stupid, it's hard to take anything serious.

I can watch, without any issues, a drawn animation with spiked and colored haired characters, and I don't think they look cringe at all. They usually fit their animated world just fine. But if you're doing an adaptation with real life people, then please....... make them look and act like real life people in their daily lives instead of a bunch of cosplayers. It's this dissonance that makes live actions absolutely terrible. It's like the amalgamation of the worse of both worlds.
The worst part is they use terrible actors too. So it really does end up looking like cosplayers acting. On the Japanese shows, some of them are pretty much that, 'talent'. It's terrible and makes Western soaps look like fine art.

I think part of the problem, other than greed, is that it usually works well the other way around. Sherlock Holmes works great as a manga/anime. So people think it's as simple to do it from anime/manga to live action, completely ignoring that translating to anime/manga often takes a lot of creative liability.

Western media tends to do live action translations better, usually from Western media. The recent Peter Rabbit films for example, if you remove the voice of 'that' unfunny man, and some of the stupid jokes, are really well done.

They literally do this, they just don't advertise them as much as the big blockbuster properties like Cowboy Bebop or Yu Yu Hakusho, and for some of them they don't even advertise that they're based on an anime. Here's an example of the former:

As someone who recently tried to get into anime...

FUUUUU... THAT.

Anime has such a giant barrier to entry with all it's weird quirks + tone that a huge percentage of people will never give it a chance.

Y'all should be excited that "normal people" might be able to give this story a shot now.
Fuck normal people. If normal people meant making Dragonball an Amrrican highschool drama then fuck them.

I can't remember a single one. And I don't understand why Netflix keep throwing money at it. I mean, how many people are actually interested in this YuYu Hakusho live action? Or even the Death Note live action. They're not even new and popular anime to the current young generation! And live action always sucks, so me, as an adult have no interest in them either.

Netflix seems so fucking lost...
The one pops in my head is Battle Angel Alita.

Ruroni Kenshin and Speed Racer I would add to that list as successful translations of anime to live action.

I agree with Battle Angel Alita was a good translation, with a lot of liberties taken. Unfortunately the whole "Big Eye" idea fell flat and I think that really came off as off putting to viewers. Aside from that they did make the right changes to adapt it to film.

Just like any property switching over to another medium, changes should be made. Books are not 1:1 with movies. Same with comics or manga. The closest would be Manga to anime but that's really almost a match made in heaven. Even then you find compromise in a budget knowing not every frame can be perfection and you are filling in the gaps with movement.
