London's best buildings are in Oxford and Regent Street, also in the City near the Tower. But 90% of the buildings are fugly here. This embassy beats them all.

What? How does that work? Pay the damn cost.

Oxford street has the best buildings? Where?
All I see is retail stores and a shitload of eurotrash.

As for the cost thing, I think that there was a huge fallout about the congestion charge that the US refused to pay for some reason. I remember having an argument with my ex who's American, me saying pay up bitches and him saying those people were ambassadors and shouldn't have to pay shit.

No, for real. Why would you say that? I'm honestly curious.
People always seem so eager to trash us, but as I get older I don't see where there is room. When I was a kid I thought America sucked and Europe has it all figured out. Now, I'm realizing every country sucks and no one figures everything out.
Why would the US have nothing to be proud of? I think we've done some cool shit...

Try looking up instead of just at the storefronts, same can be said for a lot of central London.

"In fact, let’s admit it. IT’S A FORTRESS WITH A FUCKING MOAT. It doesn’t say "welcome to a little piece of America, one of the best ideas the world ever had and a country that welcomes the tired and poor and afraid."

Seems accurate to me, they've obviously never gone through US Customs just to visit, let alone trying to enter to work or live!

You're right, no one nation has figured it out cos they don't want to figure it out. It takes years to become a doctor, solicitor etc.. but any old pleb can become a politician. The aim is to keep the fiscal boot on the neck of the vast majority of the world.

As for the US, the blind allegiance/flag saluting/USA! USA! USA! thing really sickens me. It's like "we've got nothing to cheerlead so we'll cheerlead cheerleading". It's like modern day Nazism with it's love the motherland, we are all right and they are wrong attitude of brainwashed masses that react defensively to statements like the one I made.

Fuck nations that divide us people should swear allegiance to themselves and unite us. Americans got up in arms because a sportsman killed some dogs.

A guy who plays a violent sport engaged in a violent sport of his own with un/willing participants (dogs to be interviewed later) that would/not be rewarded based upon performance (to be confirmed again) and everyone went buck wild not realizing the irony of the whole situation.

There's all that PETA fuss that riles folks up but noone has set up a People For The Ethical Treatment Of People have they?

This building is the same as the pope riding around in his bullet proof popemobile, where's the love and faith that's preached about?

Yeah, Americans have contributed so little to the world in terms of culture and technology. :p I'm not a nationalist by any stretch of the imagination, but if you don't think America has anything to be proud of you're in denial.

And yes, the embassy looks ridiculous.

Have you ever traveled the states or do you just watch Fox News and assume it's a reflection of our entire population?

Looking at the picture first, I thought it was a huge glass building and a metaphor for a new era of political transparency or something.

Edit:

Why would we pay your socialist taxes? That is sovereign freedom territory right there. Oh and our parking tickets, not gonna pay those either.

That is probably the best looking fortress you can buy today, but I really fucking hate pure glass and steel architecture, very boring and uninteresting, no matter how unique the shape is.

A billion dollars? WTF? That is 2/3 the cost of the Burj Khalifa in Dubia, which is the 160 stories and tallest building on earth. We get a 12 story cube? It better levitate.

Either I made up lies about the Boston Bomber or I fell for someone else's crap. Either way, I have absolutely no credibility and you should never pay any attention to anything I say, no matter what the context. Perm me if I claim to be an insider
Aren't moats supposed to go all the way around a structure? Or at least cut off all accessible sides?

Charming to see after a couple centuries, we still have to give an Eff You to Crown Loyalty.

Meh, its a building.

I spent nine days in New York last year and without counting ones at actual airports, I went through 12 airport-style security scanners in my time there. My record was three within an hour when I visited the Statue of Liberty.

At least the new embassy looks better than the old one. That looks like a prison from the photo on the previous page.

I think it looks really cool. Lets be honest, every embassy in the world probabally has excessive protection. I love London's old architecture but it defo could do with some modernisation.

Oh right, wasn't the congestion charge, it was the parking tickets :D

I thought steel and glass architecture trend was over now? Isn't it something that screams 90's/00's?

And for Oxford Street, I'm sorry but I still think there is no building bringing the "wow" factor. There might be a couple of buildings who look good (like the Selfridges one) but it's more because they have this old style of British architecture to them than anything else.
I mean, just look at ugly building that is the fashion and design school. That is one ugly building.
Regent St. is a bit different, lots of classic buildings. Oxford Circus is pretty nice too. But no way all the cool buildings are concentrated there.

After the spat with two of the most prominent figures in British architecture, and both peers, a second diplomatic banana skin looms: the US government has yet to agree with HM Treasury about whether it will pay VAT on the building cost and the $1bn (£650m) price quoted yesterday did not include VAT. Susman said last night talks are continuing.

What? How does that work? Pay the damn cost.

If you want your bloody VAT so bad, you can send her majesty's tax collectors o'er here to collect it.

We'll treat them real nice, we will.

The Victorian/Roman buildings are the best part. Now they have these new modern egg shells they call buildings to fuck it up. This is one of my faves on Oxford St

I think hes saying blind patriotism is a bad thing, which is something I agree with.

I dont agree with the fact America has done nothing to be proud of, but I do agree that people shouting "fuck yeah America" and hating on other countrys are idiots, as much as people shouting "Americans are all idiots" are idiots.

I actually like the look of that embassy lol.

I suppose you can have Mel Gibson, but that's really messing with our tradition of prominent American Anti-Semites.

But, you did try to give us Lady Sovereign, and we didn't hold that against you.

Well that's what you get for being a tourist and doing unimaginative, touristy things everyone and their mother has done while here.

I went to the embassy to finalize my daughter's American citizenship. Place was a dump. Empty and old (not good old). Felt like a highschool. Lots of Halo'd-up guards outside was pretty cool though.
