New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

Oh my god BGG redesign is terrible. :(

I haven't messed around with it too much, but at least it's viewable on mobile now. I wish they'd change the frontpage though. Ideally, they'd have separate desktop and mobile versions of the site, but we all know that's not going to happen.

Check a page for a game

Yeah, did that afterwards ... I think it looks better, and if the mobile functionality is there, it's worth it.

Sadly it's true, people are backing many of these games without even a hint of the actual rules. Have cool minis and lots of them? You're gonna make a ton on kickstarter. I do know several ppl who have bought big mini "board games" and essentially tossed the game components, just wanted the cool minis

I'm very guilty of this as well ... Ninja All Stars was a dud gameplay wise and I have no doubt Rail Raiders will be as well, but I love Soda Pop's chibi minis.

I still haven't seen how they'll redo the front page. I was opted into the beta for the redesigned game page for a while now, so I've had a little time to get used to it. I still think it offers too much info at a glance, but it's still a godsend for mobile.

I've been playing a ton of Sushi Go! at work, but with 4+ players scorekeeping becomes tedious.

We looked in Google Play, but there weren't any decent scorekeeping apps; the "Sushi Go! Scorekeeper" app is basically a glorified notepad where you just write the final score for each round, instead of automatically calculating points on-the-fly...

Sooooo, I decided to make one myself. I think it's neat. I'll upload it to Google Play as soon as I have an icon for it and some other stuff:

MTh3i3j.png

Crossing my fingers Gamewright doesn't have an issue with me using pictures of the cards >_> there's a similar app for iOS that also uses those pictures, so I'm hoping they'll spare me as they have that one.

Me too; I really wouldn't want to go back to the old style after using it for a few weeks. I'm sorry that not everyone likes the changes but there you are. I haven't seen what they have planned for the homepage but since I think the current iteration is an abomination I don't think I have too much to worry about.

I backed Boss Monster when it first came around and it left me disappointed. I still have it and probably should get rid of my KS copy. That said, those who might've been disappointed by the gameplay or like sprite art might want to check out Super Hazard Quest on KS. While not the same gameplay, it plays more like a Metroid/NES sidescroller. They were at MAGFest and going to be at PAXEast if anyone wants to try it out for themselves.

I got to play it at MAGFest and it was pretty fun.
I really like the way that looks but seeing how little it has raised this early, it doesn't fill me with confidence that it will get backed. And if it does, it would still be a long way from the good stretch goals like solo rules.

I actually like Boss Monster...

here are some games I've played through the years.

Axis and Allies: Fuck this game. FUCK THIS game. I only played it once. It was for my 16th birthday some 12 years ago. I played as the Axis. My dad and best friend played as the Allies. I ended up getting overwhelmed after 8 hours, the whole time being condescended to the entire time. To this day, I still get dogged by my dad and friend by them mocking me by saying "I know what I'm doing".

It was one of the best nights of my life. Love the game. I really wish I would have played it more :(

Descent 2nd Edition: Great game. I play it every wednesday. Pretty interesting mechanics which are pretty simple but can be tactically intriguiging. Great build quality and mission variety.

Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edition and 5th Edition: I got into DND back when LotR came out and played it quite a bit. Then this year I got back into it. Not really a board game. I play every two weeks. I love my players so much. They're awesome.

Exploding Kittens: My friends like this game. I don't. A bit too hot potato for me. Mechanically boring.

Cards Against Humanity: It's fun in that you're playing psychology. That said... I just don't really think the game is that offensive. Maybe I'm just desensitized. It's pretty fun.

Boss Monster This game gets shit. I like it. I'm a huge sucker for the art and there are some neat mechanics, especially if you have the expansions (which I do). Don't play with more than 4 players though. Don't. Also impose time limits on decisions. We play with a 30 second timer. Do this and you'll have fun.

Games I want to play:

Ikusa: I hear it's like Axis and Allies. And it was one of the main inspirations for Shogun: Total War, which is one of the most important games to my personal development. Downside is, it's a little pricey and it's hard to justify setting up a game night that will take advantage of the game sadly.

Legend of Drizzt/Castle Ravenloft: They seem like the same sort of niche that Descent hits. A bit lighter take on DND. Could be fun.

Elder Sign: Bought it for my best friend's birthday. He played it with another group of friends and loved it. I can't wait.

Super Dungeon Explorer: My friend owns it. We haven't gotten around to it.
Arena Same friend owns it.

Battletech: I love mechs. Hopefully in light of the new game coming, they release an updated take on it.

This actually looks more like what I hoped Boss Monster was going to be, though I haven't actually played BM, just from my understanding of the game...

Do echo the worries above though, it's slow to get going.

Boss Monster was fun the first few times we played it but then we just got bore of it real quick.

The more I look at Dark Souls the more I am thinking this is going to be another Conan, over funded and ship year late because of all the stretch goal. I am glad that company like FFG still just put out games.

Yea it's looking like a killer deal with all the extras, but how can they deliver on time? Still waiting on so many things from Shadows of Brimstone, and its gonna be what, 3 years now for Robotech kickstarter and majority of the stretches have not been seen at all? They have a ton of models to deliver still for Robotech, and they just so far have shown off 4 models of the next wave years later only 2 weeks ago. Theres like 30 more models awaiting, and no news on any actual production.

Tried to paint some of my Descent minis to practice for my Kingdom Death stuff. Yea, KDM stuff going to stay unpainted. Sure as hell am not going to ruin those. This paint shit is so far out of my realm of ability.

So I was just watching pax and they just mentioned that there is a Betrayal sequel/expansion coming?

This is the first ive heard of this!

edit: Just wiki'd this:

On April 20, 2016, it was announced that Betrayal at House on the Hill would receive its first expansion, entitled Widow's Walk, in fall of 2016.[7][8][9][10] The expansion is to add 20 new room tiles, creating an additional floor (the roof) for gameplay, plus 30 new cards and 50 new haunts.[8]

Thats great news!

Watch some of the YouTube videos, there are a lot of good guide out there. The one by Sorastro are excellent to learn the basic. While having talent help, I find miniatures painting is a lot of skill heavy.

Speaking of miniatures, putting together Shadows of Brimstone make me appreciate Game Workshop's miniatures.

I finally got to play Warhammer Quest with 4 players tonight.

Out of 2-3 attempts with 2 players (my girlfriend refuses to play 2-player anymore) and the 4-player attempt, I have still NEVER beaten the first quest. Or even come close?

We were lucky with dice rolls, enemies, locations, gear, etc. We were ok until 3.5 locations in. And then the priest and the dwarf died right as the 4th location was coming out, and that was it, 0 progress. :( There has to be a way to do it.

Finally backed Santorini. That game can't ship soon enough, I neeeeeeed it.

It looks good, but I have to wonder about the stretch goals. The original gods seemed kind of balanced, maybe with some tweaks.

There are now going to be somewhere around 800 combinations and that is just with two players.

It's been a few months since I started going to the boardgame meetups at a couple bars in my city, and finally bought my first few games that I hope to try out next week. The big one is Tragedy Looper, the players vs game master logic and deception anime aesthetic game.

I'm a tad nervous about presenting a game for the first time (especially because afaik no one in either of the bar meetups has played or even heard of the game) but I've read the rules and been fooling around with the actions to be able to better explain it. I plan to do a fake round of play that should hopefully explain the rules well.

Balancing all of the gods is surely a monumental task but the game has had quite a bit of development time and tweaking behind it and I am pretty sure most if not all of the gods/powers were already created prior to the campaign. I may be wrong about that but the old listing on BGG for Santorini (2004) on BGG has a ton of custom gods in the files that people have tried and tested.
And then there is the guy on the KS page that said he was one of the designer's first partners for the game and played over 200 games before the creation of the god powers; even without the powers, it should still be a fun abstract like Chess or Go to sit down and play.
And then going back to the god powers: Say it isn't as balanced as a Sirlin title and some gods are obviously more powerful. There are sure to be some poor match ups but I imagine a skilled player can probably put up a decent fight against an OP god in an unskilled player's hands. And there are various ways to even choose who gets the gods. I believe the 2004 version of the game had something that involved drafting a certain number of cards and narrowing it down until you only had the god that you would play.

Stealth EDIT:
A comment in an update from the designer:
Q: How much play-testing have the heroes had? Bellerophon in particular seems possibly unbalanced.
A: Bellerophon is nicely matched with some gods. Definitely not too powerful - you'll enjoy ;-)
A2: Bellerophon's ability used to be a god's ability and as such got lots of playtesting over 30 years. Not all gods and heroes have had this amount of testing. The most recent change - a couple days ago - was the cyclops polyphemus who I have only tested by myself (but don't underestimate that
So I don't know. There could be some imbalance but I think these guys know what they are doing and have had a lot of play-testing from them and the community. I'm not worried too much about imbalance but if something is horribly OP, I can always remove that and still have tons of other cards available for use.

This game looks really cool. Can't really spend the money to back it though. Hope this will be sold normally later on.

Same goes for the Dark Souls game. This one hurts more though because it looks like at this point you get just. Shit ton of extras for backing it.

Question for those familiar with Heroes of Normandie. I have HoF, does Shadows over Normandie replace HoF or add on to it? I can't decide if I should own both or sell HoF and just buy and have SoN.

Damn you :)

I've backed Santorini too. It's an impossible task to balance all the Gods. As it happens it provides a handicap system for experienced vs inexperienced players so I'm cool with that.

You can even play Vanilla vs a God when playing against kids etc.

I like the redesigned BGG pages. The old layout was terrible and was hard to figure out at first. The new layout could use some more color and contrast but overall is much easier to use.

What an amazing game Kingdom Death is. It was a unanimous smash hit for everyone that played which doesn't happen too often with our games, especially the big ones. Even a few folks who came over were drawn into watching and wanting to see the story events play out and such. The quality of the components is the highest tier and the theme is heavy as hell.

As far as the rules go, they seem very straightforward and everyone, even the ones watching, were able to pick them up really fast. Even one of the spectators who stepped in for a few rounds of a showdown didn't really need anything exlained to him. There is a problem with the rules in that we seemingly had to go to the internet for clarification on things. I couldn't find the specific answers I needed to make some rulings or figure out how targeting worked in certain situations inside of the rulebook. I also was very shaky on the timing of all of the things that happen in the settlement phase.

Beyond that, it was pretty smooth and a ton of fun. You are constantly making very meaningful decisions. Literal life and death. Almost every die roll is high suspense and very important. We fought the same monster like 7 times and the way the AI and hit location deck play out kept it interesting every time. Gathering resources, cultivating a survivor base and building up your settlement is very involved and extremely rewarding. It kind of plays like a P&P campaign without a DM. Also feels like monster hunter in that you are going to get resources from these monsters to make armor out of them. Then it hits you with some XCOM flavor with the base building and permadeath to your survivors. Easily one of the best games I have.

I can not go without mentioning that..... You have to put everything together lol. I had to go out and get sprue cutters and plastic cement etc. all the things you need to put together minis. If you have never done it before, like me, it is pretty difficult assembling the humans! Lots of tiny parts to stick together and sometimes without a guide or notch to let you know what goes where. You get a prologue model, unarmored model, and then models for each of the armor sets you can craft in the game. 2 male and 2 female versions each, on top of the monsters. The monsters are much easier generally to put together because the pieces are bigger. I have a lot of assembling to do, hours and hours worth. Then i can paint them very poorly and ruin these minis I paid so much for lol

Man I have played Twilight Struggle for hours on Steam but I am total garbage at it. Winning against the AI seems impossible for me at this point.

Also just recently found out about Android Mainframe and that game looks pretty cool.

I finally got to order Big Book of Madness. Gonna bring it to my local shop and play on table top day!

I also got a chance to try Secret Hitler. Very fun game even if it can get heated at times.

Yeah, been using it heavily this weekend (couple game nights) and found them quite useful. I probably don't use a lot of the power-user features though. Usually I'm at BGG for things like Rules, recommended players, and Files, and all those are quite accessible.

The old design had a link in the lower section where you could find direct trades for that specific game. I haven't been in a few days but I couldn't find it before. Am I missing it, or do I hate the new layout?

It's on the left column, the last section at the bottom, "Community Stats".

Yes, finding this stuff is annoying.

It is the case with any long-standing website that pretty much any design overhaul is immediately met with disdain because it requires the user to relearn how to use it.

Get a newbie to compare both the old and new design and there is no question in my mind that they will prefer the new one.

Also the old site was objectively horrific on mobile.
