New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

Beat the first Time Stories mission. It was interesting. A bit fiddly and unclear at times. Also didn't care for the theme on this one, and hope the game isn't always so trolly with it's characters/events.

the next one is more straight forward and overall it went over much better than the first one with my group.

Just got Ticket to Ride Europe and Smallworld for my birthday :D can't wait to play these. I've played TtR before but just the vanilla American map version.

tis a good day.

Barnes and Noble are doing their spring clearances sale, I found Suburbia for $26.95, there are misc card games and Monopoly and Risk. YMMV for B&N but doesn't hurt checking if you have one close by.

I've never played it before and I bought it on Steam since it was cheap. As soon as the tutorial ended I started losing fairly quickly and gave up. I need to review all of the rules before I try to play it again.

Does anyone have any opinion on buying boardgames at coolstuffinc? Seems like they're a lot cheaper than at Amazon...
CSI is probably (definitely) the #1 online retailer for board games in the US. It has a very good reputation, so you can shop with confidence. Miniature Market is another popular site. Compare prices in case something's on sale and buy at either.

Yep you have to play a few games to get the hang of it. It's a fairly deep strategic game, for a non-wargame board game. But once you play a few games everything starts to feel pretty simple. Basically focus on Battleground countries in scoring regions that are going to or likely to come up, and don't let the other side just steamroll you in one region ('Control,' which you can defeat by just taking one Battleground country away).

coolstuff is great, and the more you spend the more you save on future orders due to loyalty discounts.

that being said. you will need to play $100 orders most of the time for free shipping otherwise amazon will be cheaper.

and do not add preorders to your order unless you are okay with the whole order being delayed until that preorder is out.

Thanks for mentioning Miniature Market! Ended up ordering Dead of Winter and Mice & Mystics from them :) the price difference between Amazon and these sites for M&M was huge :p thanks again!

Miniature Market seems really good! CSI and them look like the best outside of random (but limiting) Amazon/Target B2G1 free deals. My first order with MM shipped recently and I should be getting it on Thursday. Really excited for it to arrive; it includes Orleans, El Grande, and Sheriff of Nottingham.

Those prices just make me cry :(

I wish the dark souls game was a bit more ambitious/board gamey, but at least it sounds like they have got the basics right.

Early copies of Scythe were just printed and reviewed, and a few mistakes are being corrected. Apparently they are ahead of schedule and actual backer copies (24,000 or so?) should arrive in July.

Could you imagine how much bank they would make if they made a Marvel thing like that? That was focused on the mainstream rather than minis gamers or whatever? Marvel Descent would basically be a license to print money, even more so than all the other cash machines FFG currently has cranking 24/7 (ok, maybe Star Wars minis would still have it beat :p).

Man I would love a good accessible-but-deep licensed tactical Marvel game. Legendary scratches the itch, and they actually do a really good job of incorporating theme into the cards but at its heart it's really a eurogame (in the sense of Dominion, just with some extra layers of rules and mechanics).

bleh, not what I wanted to hear :p
this is not a game that I feel I will enjoy and the guy that threw a hissy fit a few weeks back backed it and typically makes sure we play any game he backs a couple of times.

if they continue to sell it is likely only a matter of time before we get a marvel, star wars, and maybe lord of the rings version of them. I would personally prefer just an xmen version instead of all of marvel :p

Yeah it doesn't look like Marvel board-game rights are exclusive really based on how many games are out there so maybe there is hope. Go with any subset of the universe and I'm probably interested. Just not into fantasy or SW myself so that boxes me out of a lot of these types of games.

I'll probably back this game. KD:M sounds like a great game, but I still have not played it nor read the rules. If this is a more streamlined experience, I'm game.

KD:M is a cool concept with great minis, nothing more. The rules are awful, and it's a slog to play through. Streamlining it would be huge

My Kickstarter copy of World's Fair 1893 arrived on Saturday! The components look really nice. Gonna read up on the rules and try it out tonight.

Looks interesting. I'll probably end up backing it since I love Dark Souls.

I got mine also, surprised that it was ship via Amazon. The art for the game is wonderful and really evoke that era. I still can't seem to wrap my head around the game concept, going to try to rope my daughter into playing it with me later.

It's nice for a change to have Kickstarter stuffs on time and before the game hit store shelf for backer.

Can you explain why they're a slog? It's a game I'm interested in, so I'm curious what makes it annoying to play.

The combat system makes most wargames look fast paced in comparison. The rules are overly cumbersome (some like to say detailed), but it feels like an outdated style wargame simulation, rather than an actual board game. Each combat action has so many steps involved, it's overly done and whole game can get dragged out, it can feel like an overly complex RPG encounter at times.

Really outside the amazing minis, if you wanted a similar experience, just play a popular pen and paper RPG. Games like Decent and such are total opposite side of the spectrum, fast paced playing games, meant to fit the bill for the board gamer crowd.

I'm with you on this, I feel that this format is what computer gaming was made for.

Having said that I can see the appeal to some. These sort of games are almost a lifestyle choice. I don't personally have the time or inclination to invest in this.
Those that do would have a blast. Painting up all the minis and getting a like minded group together to put in the time and effort would reap rewards. The game offers unique experiences and rewarding play if effort is put in.

The retail price will sadly put many off from the outset but KS backers got a great deal out of it.

Dark Souls on KS is posted, $113 for game and only two bosses. Obviously already funded. Only stretch goals are new characters and cards, no bosses (yet).

Any word on how it is like KD:M?

edit: looks like they will have RETAILER exclusive stretch goals and the first one is bosses that you can only get from retail stores. Interesting.

I was not expecting it to be that bare on content. 2 bosses for $118? Aren't bosses like, the main draw of Dark Souls?

E: Retailer exclusive bosses? Fuck that.

I appreciate that nothing is exclusive to the KS campaign so far, but I don't like being restricted from portions of it as a backer either.

This is really weird.

lol why? Retailers finally have something to sell instead of being screwed out of kickstarter campaigns by heaps of KS exclusives. This is a nice gesture, and if you want the items, you just buy them from the retailers.

Which retailers? My FLGS where the owner is a creepy pedo who only hires 16 year old girls to work there and only pays attention to MtG players? If I can't order them off CSI or MM, it's bullshit to me.

CSI will have them if they buy them. The retailer exclusives are just unique products retailers can purchase to resell, it's not promos for the store.

They do mention that you can buy the bosses from their own site, worse comes to worse.

Game night last night was Race For the Galaxy with the first two expansions and 3/6 newbies including myself. It was interesting but since I picked it up super quickly by reading the player aid I had a lot of downtime. Like I would generally have the next few phases of the turn/the next turn already on the table while waiting for people to make decisions and it didn't even matter because all the interaction is in the phase selection. I do really like how you're reliant on the other players to get things done though.

Managed to get second though which was pretty good considering I had to change strategy halfway through.

Agreed. I still can't believe what people are willing to spend on kickstarter board games these days.

I love board games, but feel that right now we really are experiencing a tulipmania of sorts both in KS and board games generally. Just don't see it as sustainable at the current pace.

Most of these games are also overly bloated games component wise. Even simple games that don't need it. B-Seiged for example didn't need all those big fancy miniatures for such a simple tower defense like game, and then they went overboard by producing minis to replace game tokens.

Backers aren't in it for the game, they're in it for the miniatures. The lines between board game and miniature lines are being really blended. Something like Shadows of Brimstone is very much a board game ... but at the same time how is it not a miniature game.

Since it is hasn't squashed traditional miniatures gaming or traditional board games, and both are still flourishing I'm quite okay with this trend.

Yeah I think that is fair enough.

Still, I wouldn't mind an option to have the game without the models and cost.

Started a new job recently, ask in the office if anyone was interested in coming to a board game night. One guy was like "oh I don't like board games, I would rather sit around a table and talk..."

Went out for drinks with him that night, cool dude. Next night I bust out Skull, "come on just try one game", ok..

15 minutes later, "dude this is so fun you have anymore games on you?".

2 hours later we are tossing back beers and in a heated 3 player competition in Biblios.

He was asking so many questions, like how old these games were, how to buy them in China, how much? etc..

Hooked a new one.

It's fun reeling in new gamers. Especially when they see this whole other side of tabletop gaming.

I think I need to replace my Ticket to Ride/1910 exp. It has gone through so many playthroughs over the last four months and I expect it to be just as popular in the forthcoming months/years. The board is starting to come apart and the cards are wearing out. I should have bought an extra copy during Target/Amazon's B2G1 deal.

I have a workmate selling Boss Monster + Expansions, Domion + Expansions and 7 Wonders + Expansions (a couple expacs for each). I've been tempted by Boss Monster before but 7 Wonders is also supposed to be good, right? Not really heard much about Dominion.

Any recommendations?

Also on another, more vague, note. I saw a game on Kickstarter or Indiegogo a couple of weeks ago, almost certain it was KS, that I then lost. It had like a plastic tower in the middle of (I think) a square board. Anyone know what I'm thinking of?

EDIT: Nevermind on the second question. It was Santorini. Similarly, is this one gonna be decent? Thought it looked cool but I may be suckered in by the aesthetic a little...

Both 7 Wonders and Dominion are quality games in my opinion. 7 Wonders is good for 5+ people, and Dominion is good for 2-4 (unless you have Intrigue for up to 6).

Dominion is a deckbuilder and 7 Wonders is a card-collecting game -- depends on your taste.

Intrigue is one of the expacs for sale with Dominion.

I think it may come down to numbers too, I mean we can easily get a nice group for a 5+ game and all but it's obviously more organisation :p I'd like something my girlfriend and maybe housemate and I can play too because we don't get to play enough.
