New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

Hey guys. I'm needing a recommendation for a co-op game for my dad and I.

We used to play the L5R CCG and go to tournaments around the country but that stopped once the CCG was killed. We haven't done much gaming together at all since then.

We both like just about any kind of theme. Would love a game that could be completed in an hour or two. It being easy to read would be a plus as his eyesight isn't the best.

Thanks!

I'm intrigued about your time with L5R. I had a few friends who were super into it. They tried to teach me, but it seemed super complex at the time.

GoT LCG v 2.0 by FFG; then L5R 2.0 when FFG reboots it.

If anyone wants Kingdom Death: Monster expansion they are in stock.

I'm super bummed I somehow never heard about this game until it turns out it was the very last day they had copies available (went back the next day and it was sold out :'( ). How I missed hearing about it for years, I'll never know. Me and my friends are big fans of these sorts of epic games too.

Was reading the newsletter today and hopefully they'll be able to decide soon how they want to be able to handle a reprint (pre-orders or go back to KS). I only take solace in the fact that if they did a reprint it would probably be with the updated "1.4" version instead of "1.31" version.

Dude! Congrats on the purchase!

Im surprised that I spawned all of this Battlecon talk with my post. I wasnt sure if many people had even heard of it!

As far as the storage problems go - I can tell you my solution.

I have 6 deck boxes (probably could use 1 more) that I put all the flights and boss/single player stuff in. You can get a set of 6 on ebay for like 8 bucks. I seperated each flight into their own deck boxes. Then I took all the tokens and seperated those into 6 different ziplock baggies(1 for each flight, and 1 for singleplayer/boss stuff).

Although its still not as quick as I had hoped, the set up doesnt take too long once you have it set up like this. If you wanna play a flight 1, just grab the flight 1 bag and flight 1 deck box and grab your stuff.

Its not as perfect as a dedicated storage would be (which I might try making eventually) but its still faster than throwing all the chits into the box along with the insert.

WARNING: If you arent using something to keep the cards together (rubber band, deckbox, or tape or something) then DO NOT turn the box vertically what so ever. I made this mistake and all of the cards rattled around in the box and became completely unorganized. I had to spend about an hour reorganizing the cards yesterday. So again, if you opened all the cards, DO NOT put the box on its side for any reason at all.

As far as the EX and Almighty cards go, I agree they shouldve thrown in 12 more, but after reading what they are, the regular base cards are always going to get the most play.

I feel like EX and Almighty is for when you have played the regular game so much that youre looking for a change/variant. I dont think that will be anytime soon, especially since you just bought it.

GAF - We should try and get a skype Battlecon game going! It sounds like a lot more people own the game than I thought, and if youre having difficulty finding people to play, I am always down to play over skype! Ive done this with magic before and it actually works quite well! Cheating isnt really possible either since you know exactly what cards your opponent has at all times.
Thanks! I'd be happy to play over Mumble (voice chat) if that's possible. I don't own Tabletop Simulator.

And I guess you're right about EX and Almighty -- the normal bases and beta bases should provide decent variety.

I'm intrigued about your time with L5R. I had a few friends who were super into it. They tried to teach me, but it seemed super complex at the time.

I started playing L5R about a year or so after it came out. Played with the local scene (Dayton/Cincy/Columbus) till about 2003. Then picked it up again when they released Ivory edition and played till the end.

Couple of questions I hope somebody can answer:

1) I've been meaning to try out painting my board game miniatures.
Anyway, I've got brushes, a primer, a clear coat for when they're finished, and I finally bought a set of Vallejo Paints, a basic set, with I think 16 colors. Do you think I need more than that to get started? I'm considering buying another set, but I'm not sure yet. These paints are a bit pricey, but I'd rather have everything I ought to, for getting started, then to just wing it. What do you think? Are there sufficient colors in the basic set?

Here's what I bought:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009162PWU/?tag=neogaf0e-20

2) I think I'm yearning for an experience like Mage Knight the Boardgame, but I'm worried it might be a bit too heavy for me, particularly with the time involved. Once the rules are understood, how long would a game of 2 or 3 people take?

Thanks!

I agree that Lotr LCG would be something you two would enjoy since it got deckbuilding elements, factions type and it's a great co-op. It does require a bit of reading and I feel for your dad. The most annoying thing about getting older is unable to read small print. My gaming table this day have to be super bright or I can't play any game with tons of text.

So do most people recommend getting Ticket to Ride: Europe over just regular Ticket to Ride?

I have played just about every version due to the android app and Europe was fun due to adding some new mechanics but I also like how simple the vanilla version is for teaching new players. Does TtR:Europe help a lot in keeping the game from going stale to outweigh the simplicity of vanilla?

Europe is definitely my favorite, same with the rest of my family. The new mechanics are easily stripped from the game if you feel the need to when you introduce the game. I know we didn't use the stations for the first few game we did; I can't remember if we used the tunnel rule for the first game either but it's definitely easy to treat them as normal road when you teach new player.

I really think so, thought we also found that altering the rules a little ( like that drawing more mission card at the start of the game, and keeping more of them ) also help keeping the game interesting in the long run.

Yeah mumble would work! However, I can not recommend that you get TTS enough! Its a fantastic way to try games before you buy them. I originally thought it would save me money because I could just play the games on there, but really, its cost me more money than anything because I just end up buying nearly everything I play.. lol. Ive put nearly 400 hours into it. Which is frightening.

Millennium Blades! A new "CCG Simulator" from Level 99. Never given the Dev much looks due to their animu laced games (Battlecon, Pixel Tactics, etc.) and this KS went well under my radar. But recently there has been a huge hype train building and I have succumb.

A 2 hour boardgame that has you playing 2 distinct mini games 3 times each to simulate the life of a CCG player. Build your deck and take it to 3 tournaments to see who has the most points at the end. Comes with a metric ton of cards with crazy art.

Millennium Blades is in route to me! Can't wait to look at all those pretty pretty cards.
Nice! My copy is supposed to get here by Thursday at the latest.
I hadn't looked at too much card art prior to buying it but there are some hilarious cards in the game. Actually, I was just researching Codex, which I backed a while back, and some of the cards in that had me laughing too.
Bring on the funny complex card games!

I own both and think it's horses for courses honestly. Sometimes the simpler gameplay of the original game is preferable to the more challenging Europe map and visa versa. I have the expansions to both too which are nice to freshen up the game if they are feeling a bit stale. However, as has already been said, one may always house rule different aspects of the rules too. I am glad that I have both as I would not want to have to pick between them. Each serves me well depending on mood and group make-up. Also, if you think that you might regularly be playing with only 2 or 3 players then I strongly recommend Nordic Countries. I bought this a couple of weeks ago for my FLGS owner's birthday and we have already played it 30 times. We both adore it. Now this iteration I would have no trouble picking over the original or the Europe iteration but fortunately I don't have to make that decision :). I'm not sure if any of that helps but those are my thoughts on the matter anyway. Whatever you decide you will own a classic game that will stand the test of time. Have fun! :)

This upcoming Pandemic Iberia game might be my first purchase of a Pandemic game (not counting The Cure)

I seriously thought that was a troll when I saw the thread. Looks really cool though. Pandemic line is so good. I stayed away from the reboot (still have my original and the expansion) but I think I have everything else Pandemic related and they haven't let me down yet.

I am actually still more interested in the Cthulhu version of a Pandemic. I currently only own the cure and this new one sounds different enough from the original game.

Big thunderstorm about to hit but that ain't stopping me: In an hour and a half I'll be at a local store playing Formula D for the first time. I've owned it for a while but haven't ever read enough of the rules to figure out how turns and stuff work (I know you can overshoot and stuff). Smash Up last week went well, so I'll defininlty be there (provided the store doesn't close early because of the storm). I'm debating taking my copy of Aloen Frontiers with me in case anyone wants to play afterwards but this store doesn't stay up late and not many people show up anyway, so maybe not.

Be interesting to see how you like Formula D. I used to have it and the expansion but honestly kind of found the rolling of dice and counting of spaces (and checking of different permutations of moves) kind of tedious. I played Automobiles for the first time last week and much preferred it as a racing game even though it's really a deckbuilder with a racing theme. But I also know some people area crazy into Formula D, with leagues and whatnot, so I'm sure there's something there that I just never got into enough to perceive.

It's good! It's one of these games that's actually almost light-feeling but you need one person to kind of grind through the rules and get all the little details down pat and then you're off and it all comes pretty naturally (like if you end your movement behind a car you don't take waste cubes). It's in some ways quite similar to Trains which I like, but instead of being about fueling expansion on the board it's about timing out and making efficient movement.

I like Formula D in concept but in practice I run into a couple of problems. The game isn't too interesting as a solitaire venture or when the players are spread out across the track so you either a) have too few players to make the game interesting, or b) have enough players to make it interesting but then it takes too long for everyone to take their turns.

We'll see how Formula D goes. I bought it because it looks good: the board and track are very cool-looking. I parsed the rules a tiny bit before buying it too and thought it would be fun. I hope I like it (and not just because I spent money on it). I just wanted a good racing game and it was between this or Hot Rod Creeps (which I will pick up at some point because I like the rockabilly imagery) at the time. The recently Kickstarted Fast and the Furious game looked good too but I didn't care for the licensed art on the cards and wanted something more creative and original.

If I don't end up liking it, I always have PitchCar to fall back on. I mentioned it last week during Smash Up and one of the guys there said "Oh, did you buy it during the CSI sale? Me too, I couldn't pass those prices up." So we have the possibility of combining sets and running a huge track or an occasional racing league or even some of the Mario Kart variants at the store with a ton of PitchCar material too.

I'll share my impressions tonight when I get back.
I know that the first time I went to this game store, I brought up not being able to play much. I was talking to the owner and bemoaned the fact that I buy too much and don't have time to learn anything; I buy something, read up on the rules, and before I can learn and play it, I have bought something else. I specifically mentioned Formula D because it had just arrived and the owner said "I am very familiar with the game and would teach you the rules anytime you want." But I don't know if he is involved, it might be someone else teaching the game, and last week the instructions for Smash Up were very rough (luckily I knew the rules like the back of my hand, though I did jump the gun on a couple moves because I hadn't been paying enough attention, so I tried to help out because I know that teaching a game to others can be tough).

Automobiles looks good, but I still haven't ever played Trains and want that a lot more. One of these days I'll try either of them (or planes).

I really like it from a solo perspective if you print custom tracks and run your own little "league" with various drivers.

Have you played Thunder Alley? It's probably my favorite race game and it completely replaced Formula D for me. The rules aren't that much more complicated and Thunder Alley has a ton of player interaction.

One thing that's neat to me about BattleCON: Devastation is that despite the anime style it doesn't seem to be super fanservice heavy. If anything, the style looks like an oldschool manga or something.

I'd say most all of the female characters have reasonable outfits, and the only really revealing outfit is for a character who's intended to seduce and petrify enemies.

So Formula D.......
I showed up and there weren't that many other people there. Some of the people from last week's Smash Up session that said they wanted to play Formula D this week flaked, so it was four people total that were going to be playing. The owner of the game bought the Sebring/Chicago map prior to the game starting and decided we would street race on Chicago. Characters were chosen prior to the rules being read, which made it kind of hard to choose based on special power or stats, since I did not really know how the powers or stats mattered. I finally settled on the Asian cat girl who had average stats (a lot of tire points though) and a power that seemed easy to understand (if you pass my character on a straight, you move one less movement space). We decided on two laps to win.
The rules were finally explained and were a bit shaky, since the owner hadn't played in a long time. We were going to play without things like slipstreaming/drafting, and the penelties for braking in a turn or for exceeding the turn but not stopping enough were not explained until we entered our first turn. I was in the first position after rolling for placement and was the first to go, but did not even understand when I could shift and what dice to roll yet. After a bit more explaining, it all became clear to me; I had tried to read the rules a couple years ago when I bought the game but shut my brain off when I got to the section on how to take turns. If I had previously drug the components out and looked at the symbols next to a turn or the player board gear colors and dice colors, it would have went a long way towards understanding the game.
Anyway, I took the first turn poorly since I didn't really get the strategy regarding up shifting as early as possible in a turn. I had some low rolls in the beginning and was passed by the other racers. Halfway through the track, I was in third place and a good 15 spaces from the 1st and 2nd players. I made some risky moves that panned out and started catching up. The store owner said we might have to cut it short, because he was trying to get out of there a bit early. We decided on one lap for winner, but the first and second position players were within winning distance for the current gears. First player rolled low and wound up just outside the finish line, the next player rolled enough to win.

Thoughts on the game?
Well, I really liked it. I have read some negative reviews of the game in the past, usually about games with a lot of players. Maybe it would been too much for me if we had a full game of 12 players. I know it definitely would have lasted a lot longer and we only finished one lap in 90 or so minutes. I dug the rules for taking corners and the balancing act between shifting up or down and hoping for high or low rolls. The dice add a lot of luck but pushing your luck with a higher gear going into a turn was fun for me because I don't play many games where I have to take big risks based on dice rolls. I still think the game itself looks really cool and I like the gearbox player boards. The character powers in street races seemed fun too; one player loved the fact that his character can throw the radio in his car out the window at another car and damage it. I liked the damage die for landing next to someone and the ability to take the middle of a curve or block other people. The damage rolls were kind to me and I liked the frustration that you can cause other players.
I wish we could have finished a second lap and played longer, or played multiple races. And more players might have been fun. I left the store wanting to play more and wanting to pick up expansions to go with my base game. It was a hit with me though.

Oh that sounds pretty fun lol. I might try that just so I can get more plays out of the game haha.

Have not! I'll put it on my BGGCon playlist lol.

So Formula D.......

Glad you liked it! I also don't think I've played a course for more than 1 lap. I want to get more maps but I can't justify the cost given how little I've gotten it to the table.

Thanks!

Hey Polioliolio! I'm not a great painter, but don't want your post to go unnoticed. What are you going to be painting? The one thing I would recommend is to pick up some inks (often called washes). If these aren't included in your Vallejo set, they are very watery paints that you brush on after your base coat so that they will seep into and darken the crevices on the figure.

Someone in this thread once referred to it as "liquid talent". It really does provide a natural shadow to your models at almost no effort. You can probably get by with a black and a brown plus maybe a blue, red or green depending on what colors you are washing over.

Regarding Mage Knight:
This was a long game both times I've played it, but it also didn't feel heavy in the traditional sense either. There is a lot to take in, but it never felt terribly cutthroat as a competitive game as there is so much exploration and such to take part in. You can get buried in points and still have a good time, which I haven't felt in games like Caverna, for instance.

If possible, find someone to teach you in person because the complexity of the game is magnified tenfold by the ridiculous dual-rulebook.

If you can get your hands on it I highly, highly recommend it. Me and everyone that has come in contact with it have been completely enthralled.

I didn't realize that the game went OOP, everyone thought they were just doing their usual stop taking order and put them on sale again. I was wondering why suddenly people were asking for a grand on eBay. My feeling is they probably will do a reprint due to all the investment they already made.

They said that they estimated the stock they had could carry them all the way through 2016, but then the game just kept getting more popular, and it only lasted 3.5 months.

They had to reserve a few to take to Gencon, and 2 copies were sold to a bookstore in Oregon (which is only a tempting 3 hour drive!).

I'm subscribed to the newsletter and watching it like a hawk for a pre-order button! At the very least, I'm hoping they'd have something available before Christmas, but I'm not really sure how long the manufacturing process would take so maybe it would be better to prepare myself to wait until 2017.

Dominion is super fun. Game of Thrones is good but not for everyone. It's a war game that takes at least 4 hours and can end in anger, from my experience. Perhaps best to play a co-op game right after! It is fun and engaging though, especially if you're a fan of the IP. Just not something I would play more than once every few months.

If you are in Portland area might want to check Guardian Games. I saw a whole bunch of expansions and core game there last month. Though their price can be pretty high as they often price their stuff based on demand.
