New Call of Duty Black Ops 3 update adds Micro Transactions

Gaming in 2016 pay to win

Expected since they did the same thing to AW.

I'm still interested in the game if I catch it on a sale. I need a good multiplayer shooter.

It's camos and taunts. Who cares if people spent on money on those. And it's not that hard to get 10 cryptokeys to buy Supply Drops by just playing the game.

Nice try though Bodies.

Looks like they're testing the waters with Zombies. You can buy things that you originally need to farm to get in order to increase your abilities. Let's hope these just stay in modes like Zombies, but still.

I could not give one damn about cosmetic micro-transactions. It makes no difference to me whether someone wants to spend extra money on funny hats because it's not ruining my experience of the game. However, having the opportunity to "get ahead" through an advantage given to you by paying more money is nothing short of disgraceful.

This was quite obviously coming ever since the supply drop system was implemented. However, everything in supply drops is cosmetic only and you can get lots of them just through normal play (just remember: do not buy rare drops, they are not worth it)

This is not like AW where you had more powerful versions of weapons inside drops.

Oh no, Call Of Duty doing the same thing as TF2
Oh perish forbid
Everyone will be so mad
/s
(As long as it's just cosmetics I'm cool)

The trend of adding this stuff in after the initial release (and after reviews are done) is really gross.
I don't blame them, when it comes to cosmetic MTs. Reviewers with an agenda to drive home would have (unfairly) skewered a game like this for adding microtransactions that literally don't affect the game in any way, negatively or positively. If more reviewers would be fair in the way they handle cosmetic microtransactions, they would probably be in the game from the start, and a patch like this one would be adding more choices.

Seems strange that it's only an issue for certain games. No one seems to hammer TF2, or LoL, or DOTA, or Street Fighter. Maybe I just miss all those hate threads though.

It might not be completely accurate, but the point it is trying to make is obvious.
It's in absolutely no way accurate; it does nothing to point the increased production values or complexity, it's completely against the reality of how DLC is developed or how micro-transactions work in premium games. The only thing that it can realistically show is, that the spending cap for enthusiasts is higher these days thank to higher costs of development and inflation.

Seriously. I don't mind if dev teams make money on taunts and cosmetics. Saying that, I'm assuming BOPSIII also has the 50$ season pass. :P

Are the micro transactions offered first on the PlayStation 4, the home of Call of Duty?

This patch came out first on PS4 first but it seems they're bringing it to Xbox One and PC this week as well. This is not part of the Sony deal.

Funnily enough, microtransactions actually did come to Xbox first when Microsoft had the preference, so PS players had a little advantage in not having to deal with microtransactions for another month after they were announced. I never bothered with map packs so PS3/PS4 was the best place to play COD for me!

Nowhere near as bad as what's going on with Destiny's class boost IMO. Cosmetic microtransactions are fine. Pay to win is bad.

The word cosmetic should be added to the title or thread should be locked.

As I posted above, it isn't all cosmetic. For the Zombies mode you can buy Liquid Divinium. You originally had to farm this buy playing the game. It it used to create different abilities for your character. So I would not call this a completely cosmetic thing.

For those saying it's sneaky to patch this in post-launch; this wasn't completely unannounced. Black Ops 3's menu always had a "Store" section with the words "Coming Soon" attached. I think it was pretty obvious it was for microtransaction.

Oh shit, I totally forgot Advanced Warfare's guns had different stat variations. It actually made that much of a difference?

To the point I stopped playing AW and will never touch it again with a barge pole.

Micro transactions that make you better at the game = developer can fuck off and will never ever get another penny from me, ever.

Sledge hammer are dead to me.

Treyarch are getting close to the line, especially with zombies but thats coop and not PVP so who cares.

Destiny are close to the line as well with time saving boosters (which just adds more grind for everything else).

Micro transactions should be cosmetic only, go further and you will loose your customers.

Yea I don't see the problem if it's camos and taunts. This is what Micro transactions should be.

Edit: oh, doesn't seem to be 100% cosmetic.

That's shitty. I stopped playing sometime after the third DLC pack dropped, so I must have missed the crazy stat guns.

Cosmetics that you can earn by just playing the game. I see no problem with this. If people would rather buy the shit, let them. It has no impact on the actual playing of the game itself.

Most of the stuff that comes out of the black market in Blops3 is fucking trash. So, fine? People want to waste money on tacky looking camo patterns, makes sense for Activision to cash in.

Well, but a lot of those Gobblegums are useless if you play Zombies seriously. They added the ability to turn gums into Divinium as well, so it's not that bad.

Also tha tis coop, so if some fool wants to spend all that money to get gums let him. It's going to help you out in the end.

Yeah. It really isn't worth it to waste your money on this. 10 cryptokeys for one drop and 30 for a rare drop. You can earn 30 keys in a few hours of play.

So you release the game without any BS, get positive reviews and word of mouth, and then trojan horse the BS in when it is past its initial marketing cycle.

That is the new M.O., right?
