New Deus Ex game was pitched by Eidos-Montreal, publishers considered it too 'niche'

Imagine being lucky enough to be a professional developer at a critically acclaimed studio, working on a beloved franchise, with the support of management and your company, and the publisher who acquired you decides to shut down your passion project because it doesn't have enough mass appeal.

I'd be absolutely crushed.

I don't understand either, why some people recommended me the ugly and boring game.
Spent an hour and deleted forever!

Human Revolution was AMAZING!

Mankind Divided was an ABSOLUTE travesty. It was such a step down from the open world exploration and cool city vibe of Human Revolution.

A shame really. I loved HR. MD not so much and barely played the original (waiting on you Nightdive) but this franchise needs to come back!

Not shocked, that last two were snooze-fests. Rarely have I fell asleep during a game, but Deus Ex hit the nail on the head
The original Deus Ex was a blast. A very silly game where you got to do all sorts of fun things on an adventure which was a grand tour of conspiracy theories. Human Revolution was as dull as ditch water and not especially well-made.

Really wish they could scale back the production of some of these AAA games such that ~1.5-2M sales would be enough for the entire production to be in the green. Really sad that Western studios have narrowed their greenlights to games with 8M+ sales potential. Fuckin' shareholders man.

Oh, for fucks sake. How hard is it to take one of the greatest games of all time and make money off of it?
  1. Scrounge together a couple million bucks.
  2. Write a cheque addressed to Nightdive Studios.
  3. Hire them to remaster the original Deus Ex. Change nothing but the presentation. Do not touch the soundtrack.
  4. Specifically ask them to fix the lip sync.
You now how a remastered version of one of the most beloved video games of all time. Release this on PC and consoles. You'll make a reliable profit on your investment for a fraction of the cost of a new entry. This begins to revitalise the Deus Ex brand by reminding people why it's so beloved in the first place.
  1. Scrounge together a couple million bucks from the money you just made.
  2. Write another cheque addressed to Nightdive Studios.
  3. Hire them to remake Deus Ex: Invisible War.
  4. Fix the ammo non-sense, get rid of the loading screens and expand the environments so they don't feel like shoe boxes.
You now have an improved version of the sequel to your beloved remaster that can be discovered by fans new and old. You'll make a reliable profit on your investment for a fraction of the cost of a new entry. This continues to revitalise the Deus Ex brand.

Deus Ex is one of my favorite franchises and I hate that it's dead. I wish we would even just get a release of human revolution on modern consoles with some slight improvements to framerate and resolution etc.

They should just sell the IP.

I'd love that studio and IP to be under someone else like Sony or something.

I tried whatever that reboot was from a few years ago- woof. I felt like people praising it were on drugs. It felt like a C Tier game. I think I made it through the first mission or area and bailed out.

I think Mankind Divided was fine. In fact, it was still a great game, it was just overshadowed by what Human Revolution did.

I'm sad they never finished the forced trilogy and also fuck Square Enix for forcing them to release half a game in Mankind Divided but I'm glad we got 2 modern Deus Ex games (both of which underperformed financially and yes I know it's Meme Memix "financial performance")

We wont realy see games like this again sadly, to many soft heads that dont want these type of games Immersive sims dont seem to sell well so I cant blame devs and publishers not wanting to risk it, although a bombastic lootah shootah, with a wacky crew of chicka dickas and loopy benefit frauds would of probably got green lit.

Mankind Divided's story was obviously unfinished
What story?🤔

There was barely any story there to begin with in comparison to HR. MD was all about side content which is like 90% of the whole game.

As for the news... Uh, well, I think what SQE did with the IP and MD will forever hunt it, the devs as well and we'll never see another DE cuz of all this. If DE was as niche as these idiots are saying, KCDII (and a lot of other games) wouldn't be a thing at all cuz this is how a true niche game looks like and which not a lot of people will like. It's just a brainless coward's excuse to not fund the project which needs a lot of money and time in the oven.

They need to start finding ways to make those niche games profitable, or they're going to join Ubisoft in the quicksand--weighed down by bland but pretty 5-year dev cycle games that are somehow on year eight and looking at a third delay to 203X.

But no, everyone got to try to chase that GTA/Fortnite money.

I don't disagree, but a lot of the side content put together a pretty interesting story of its own. It would've been good to get a follow up to actually flesh out what wasn't finished.

They are correct that it is niche however it is the execution. Fuse human revolution with some cod style action and get a great reception. Pubs can't think in terms of marketing it seems.

Wasn't that basically the Syndicate FPS from 2012?

That one didn't do so well iirc. Cool game though. Wish it was on Steam.

Source: https://insider-gaming.com/exclusive-new-deus-ex-game-pitched-by-eidos-montreal/

While working on details regarding the recent layoffs at the Montreal, Quebec-based studio, it was learned that the company had been actively pitching to external partners and publishers a new Deus Ex game.
According to multiple sources close to the studio's plans, Eidos-Montreal was pitching the new game regularly, but it hasn't led to any commitments from publishers.
One source said that there was a belief from a couple possible partners that the series was "too niche" at this stage. Another said that it became clear after a few meetings that publishers aren't willing to take on the financial risk that comes with the Deus Ex franchise at the moment.
Where is Phil when we need it him, MS could buy IP and outsource it or give it to one of their studios.

It's like goldilocks. A lot of people found the level of painfully bland, dumbed down and standardised AAA games to be just right for them in the 360/PS3 era.

And make DE the GAAS shooter Square always wanted.

So many trash AAA games being approved and release to no audience, but somehow a AA Deus EX would be too niche.
FFS, we have morons for CEOs, pretending to know what they are talking about.

I really enjoyed the reboot and still need to get around to Mankind Divided. Shame they aren't getting the greenlight for this as they're really interesting games.

It's okay for some games to be niche. Publishers should embrace it.

Deus Ex is a household name in videogaming. They might nog sell tens of millions of copies but everyone knows the name. Publishers should be more proud of legacy titles like this instead of just shelving it because it won't bring in a billion dollars.

From a game design perspective and nuance, yeah I see the difference. I was thinking more from a marketing standpoint. What would a high level trailer look like that's so different, that people would flock to one and not the other?

The issue would have to be really dumbed down and fundamental for it to not even pass an initial pitch, like "game is too dark and serious" or "too cerebral" or "not enough purple". Or may be it really is stuck behind a legacy and the "immersive sim" branding.
marketable imagery and setting, impactful trailers, all of this is important of course, but at the end of the day what will make the difference for the public is the actual formula, what the game is about

This probably happens more often than you think. At least for the past decade and some. I reckon an abundance of these kinds of projects have been shut down behind the scenes. You just don't hear about it publically, untill some years later a dev spills the beans about it. The only ones who manage to avoid this are the solo or small team devs that passionately work with the limited resources they have at their disposal.

Eh, I think we'll start seeing a resurgence in the niche scene. They won't have the high production values you're accustomed to though.

Try Gloomwood if you want to see what it looks like. Amazing mechanics, but the visuals might turn down some people.

Lol. Lmao even.
Legacy doesn't mean shit if it's not making money today. Go play the old titles and indulge in legacy. No one, least of all yourself, would burn money for the sake of "legacy".

i.e. "wasn't suitable for a modern audience"
Actually, it sounds like they tried to do exactly that with this pitch:

Not much is known about the details behind this new Deus Ex game being pursued. However, it was said that the concept for the game had "charm and novelty", but that it didn't match up with the "expectations or standards typically associated with the Deus Ex brand".

If they did, the games would not be what they are. Whether you like it or not, it costs money for these games too look, play and sound like they do.

And the fact that is that a lot of people would balk at paying a full 70 dollars for a modern Deus Ex.

Deus Ex is too niche? in these Luigi times ??
They should absolutely go all in with the red pill truth bomb narrative and market it brazenly. But ofcourse they won't.

My favorite Deus Ex video >

Human Revolution was an exceptional game. To this day, it's better than many recently released AAA games. Its sequel, however, didn't manage the same feat, which was disappointing. It was a good game, but it could have been much better.

If this possible sequel were to follow in the same vein as the previous game, it would be a loss for fans, but I don't think it would be that disastrous, unfortunately.

Possibly. The other source said it may be too niche. So who knows? Could just be an awful pitch too

I really hate how every IP needs to be a multi-billion Fortnite beater.

Stuff like Deus Ex, Metroid, System Shock, etc are not low attention span Marvel/Disney cinematic slop, they will never reach such massive audience. Just use a reasonable budget and expect reasonable sales. There are dedicated fans/gamers who will support you way more than your average casual non-gamer who only cares about the next popular thing.

Mankind Divided killed the franchise, let's be real.

I don't think this is the way things work. What is even a reasonable budget today? I don't think it is low enough that the sales of these games would be justified. Eidos learned this the hard way, they sunk major resources into MD and it just blew up in their face.

Really wish they could scale back the production of some of these AAA games such that ~1.5-2M sales would be enough for the entire production to be in the green. Really sad that Western studios have narrowed their greenlights to games with 8M+ sales potential. Fuckin' shareholders man.
I don't think it is even possible for a western studio to make a game where 2M sales produces a good outcome in terms of return.

Dunno, hire fewer voice actors and writers, make fewer cinematics, don't hire DEI consultants, don't hire Denuvo, etc.

I don't know how other "AA" devs do it.

If Deus Ex is too niche then where does that put Marvel's Avengers then?
A massive screw up that enriched a few select names at Marvel and no one else. When you allow Crystal Dynamics to make it a live service and a Ms. Marvel game in all but name, you're cooked.

My point is they should budget accordingly.

Dev costs for Mankind Divided exploded during development. They created their own engine for fuck's sake. They spent so much resources on cutting edge graphics but no Deus Ex fan asked for that. Deus Ex was always niche but they gave it a blockbuster budget and then were surprised at the relatively low sales numbers. It's an immersive sim, these games never do COD numbers.

And now the IP is shelved and the studio gutted. Mismanagement of an IP and a great developer.

I reckon by limiting and freezing their feature scope. Thus keeping their development cycle to a reasonable timeframe and the budget to a wisely manageable degree. See Spacemarine 2 for reference to what entails in a modern AA game gameplay-wise.

I hope each one of these publishers will go bankrupt.
Wouldn't you prefer if they came to their senses instead?

Yes, of course. But they won't.

Something has to be said about how badly Square Enix mismanaged a lot of its Eidos properties, including this one.

This one is completely on them imo.

I think Deus Ex also kills cyberpunk in every way as well, just has a better overall feel to me. I don't know what it is about cyberpunk but man I struggle finding the excitement to keep pushing into that game. Jensen is such a better character than V

doesn't suprise me.

now imagine if they tried to make a new Deus Ex without all the simplified elements and designed it like the original, with no handholding, no waypoints, where you actually had to read and look through logs etc.

the modern "gamer" would be completely lost due to being conditioned to never have to use their brain even for a second

I am currently replaying the first game on the Steam Deck, and the more I play the more I'm just disgusted by the thought of modern game design trends and casualification...
somewhere along the way we took a wrong turn.
