New EGM scores (April issue)

Think of it as an Xbox port... except it's only coming to the PS2. :lol

It's a new release. It's got lots of new content. More than all of the $60 "next-gen" ports combined. Please quit your bitching.

At only half the price of those "next gen" ports too!

The winner should be obvious..

While I don't have quite the same amount of bile directed towards GRAW's snub, I do a see a lot of "lots of" and other quantifiers when describing MGS' bonus features by its defenders. All well and good, but arguably unable to ever really counter a game that is not made up of "lots of" or "plenty of" new material, but rather ALL new material.

Regardless, it missed out on GotM by what, a point? QFD.

Though that $50 paid for playing Snake Eater a year and half ago upon release.

I paid $50 for both DMC3 and MGS3, and I don't like the trend of re-releasing games with upgraded features. Spend the dev time working on new projects. That's all I'm saying. I think this trend in general is really bad for gamers. Especially early adopting hardcore gamers like the ones who post here. I forgot you can't criticize anything MGS related on a gaming message board.

QFT.

I don't even think mags should re-review this tripe. New games should be all that is qualified as GOTM material, at the very least. Konami and Capcom(DMC3 SE) are just gauging us to buy their games again. And I don't care if the online mode is the greatest online mode in history, I will not buy this shit on principle alone. Yeah, I know I'm missing out, but we should be sending a message to these publishers.

I don't think it's a continuation storywise. Acid's story was wacked, but how it all came together at the end was actually pretty damn cool. Here's what Che had to say in the last Acid thread-

"I've been playing Acid 2 (english version) exclusively as a handheld game for the past month or so and it's excellent. Fixes all the things that bugged me about the first game (although I still enjoyed it), essentially making it almost flawless. Ho, but it is still a very quirky game. If you like X-Com style tactics, then you won't really mind the fact that it's married to a strange, yet compelling random draw card battle system. The story is a bit better this time around too. Definitely pick it up.

BEST GAME ON THIS PIECE OF TRASH WE LIKE TO CALL THE PSP."
Cool, man... thanks for the info. I'm sure I'll wind up picking up both games at some point anyway! I guess it goes without saying that March is killing us all. :(

MGS3:S is helping the devs prepare for MGS4. It's to test their first try at an online component for the Metal Gear Solid franchise and it's being received greatly.

are you kidding me? playable Vergil(a new character for a game like DMC means a new game), the bloody palace, new turbo mode, new bosses. and with MGS3:S new online multiplayer, new camera a la splinter cell and this is just on top of my head for 20 and 30 respectively what are you whining about?

It'd be hard to disagree with the scores without having played the games. That said, for me, it's not encouraging that MGS3 topped GRAW, as I didn't even like MGS3 much (aside from the great cutscenes.)

so this is where the thread turns into the obligatory "THIS GAME I HAVEN'T PLAYED GOT A BETTER/WORSE SCORE THAN THIS OTHER GAME I HAVEN'T PLAYED?! EGM SUCKS!" thread?

Well that's good news. I was choked that my damn principles wouldn't let me buy this game. Now I can just wait for MGS4 to fill the MGS online void in my soul. Right on.

Waiting for the inevitable MGS4: Ohsnapwegotyourmoneyagain-ence to release.

Yeah, higher fuller price re-releases I would be more inclined to complain but superior versions of already fantastic games at budget prices. I ain't complaining. VF4:Evo was a nice thing.

Seriously though, GRAW averaged 9.5, how is that not encouraging? This whole MGS3 vs. GRAW is stupid, they're both clearly great games.

but GRAW didn't get the prestigious "GAME OF THE MONTH" label that we will all forget about in a week anyway!

So just to be clear: You hope these re-releases are successful? You hope you see more of this trend in the future?

Question: Do you buy DVD's of your favorite films? Are you happy when the directors cut with new material and tons of bonus features comes out a year later? Do you buy the same film again when this happens?

I'm not attacking the specific virtues of these titles, only the fact that the trend is something I don't like in general.

I'm sure he won't mind paying $5 for a mission pack that could be time spent working on the expansion to GRAW that Ubi will release for 360 in 5-6 months. Which he will also buy.

I thought Black was worth more than 6.0s, I'd give it an 8.0 even though I noticed more flaws than I can count.

The Pursuit Force score is really odd, though, it's totally conflicting with what I've been hearing from people with the game. I'd like to hear what they said about it.

Why? Because it's a port of a game never released here?

got my issue, some tidbits

6,0

- the game feels like a museum piece
- it's nothing special
- menus are uniformative
- boring story line

On another thought... you're right... they both got great scores. Dismiss my previous nonsense... sleep deprivation... :p

I'm all for it, if they do it like they did with DMC3:SE and MGS3:S meaning re-releases with tons of new stuff for budget prices now if a re-release cost the same as an all new game (50 dollars) then you are right but right now you don't have a good point.

and yes I do buy DVD of my favorite films and nope I don't really care bout that because first no one is holding me at gunpoint so that I buy it, second if the bonus material warrant a purchase sure why not? and third this is business, companies only care bout making money get used to it.

The fact is that implementing these bonus features take additional time which means that I would have had to wait longer for DMC3, which is not something I relish. It would have been nice to get DMC3:SE instead of DMC3 right at the start but if getting DMC3:SE means that I would have to wait another year for the game, I would rather get DMC3 early and then get DMC3:SE a year later. I bought both BTW, and have absolutely no complains.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. I think you guys will be singing a different tune when all our favorite games our getting released twice.

Why do people go batshit over special edition releases? You don't see movie fans cry afowl if something like, say, LOTR Special Edition dvd boxsets achieve dvd of the month in some publications. So why bitch if something like MGS3S, which has more extra content than most games originally had (not to mention MGS3's ALREADY insane replay value and tons of things to offer). So really people, if the game has that much new content and features, why does it really matter?

Your comparison lacks merit as the SE version of LOTR was released simultaneous with the stripped down version. Also, I made the comparison of SE DVD releases above and I don't like that trend much either.

No one has to buy it. It's not like it's a big deal if the very best games get these releases. I think this qualifies. Plus they fixed the archaic ass camera, which was the biggest fault. That's fucking huge! If most re-releases are going to be things like MGS, Ninja Gaiden, etc. it seems to me that's a better value than a lot of crap out there. Who gives an ass what got GOTM.

As long as there is addition content worth paying for I don't think anyone will be singing a different tune.

The SE editions of LOTR were released months after the theatrical cut DVD.

The base game is already out and released. You do NOT need to buy these rereleases to get the full benefit of the base game. Its just chock full of extre content.

Though, I can think of other worse scenarios. Like releasing games to early and having to patch the game a few months down the line *cough*COD2*cough*

When does Substance come out and how much is it going to be? I recently bought DMC3:SE on a whim and am absolutely loving it. Best $20 I've spent on a game since VF4:Evo.

We'll see. What if instead of releasing an online map pack seperately for Halo 2 they released Halo 2: The better edition with the new maps for $39 and it was the only way to get the new maps? Would GAF be happy? What about Socom 3?

Exactly, and its not like they're charging full price for it too. IMO Sunstance wasn't a very good re-release, but Subsistence is totally worth it (for the 3rd person camera and online modes).

MGS3:S is only $30 and the map pack was $20, this is a much better deal any way you slice it. Cause not only do you get the original game (with a better camera) but you get the online disc and other content.
