Like back in the day it was just clout chasers, people with sports avatars or PC elitism running rampant and I could barely tell anyone apart. (This is before the progressive era went heavy)

Now I'm like "Oh it's that shit poster with the Val Kilmer avatar." Or "Hey it's my boy Mista." We got distinct people and an entire thread doesn't have thousands of posts per minute that you GOTTA wade through.

So yeah 2020>2010.

I'm liking it too. We're definitely more mature than back in the day -- mature enough, in many cases, to not have to take things too seriously, and to understand the time and place for each kind of tone.

The reactions have kept noise posts to a minimum. If you consider a reaction to be similar to a "+1" or "this" or "lol" post, we're at around 5,000 real posts per day and 10,000 "THIS LOL" posts per day, only without the latter messing up threads.

We're doing our best to keep the console wars under control, and things aren't too bad right now.

I like old GAF, but I do enjoy new GAF more so. Gaming side does seem a little slow, not sure if that's because of the website, or just the slow trickle of games? GAF is a small town, where you'll see familiar people and wave, ERA is a large city, rude people, and the ones you do like, good luck seeing them again.

I only lurked periodically back then (and until recently), as I didn’t want to use my work emails for a forum, but I mostly agree. Especially comparr’s to Era which is like old GAF but worse.

The only things I somewhat miss from over there, or lurking Gaf back then, is the news threads here are slower and more focused on AAA stuff, as are the game OTs. But subreddits can be a good substitute for more niche stuff. I hear Discord is as well, but I’ve never used it.

As someone else mentioned, having a policies forum ws a great idea as well. I never bothered lurking off topic here p, nor spent much time in Etcetera over there, as I don‘t come to a gaming forum for hot takes in politics and there was/is too much of that to make those sub forums enjoyable. Having it’s own area makes off topic here readable.

i was a lurker back in old gaf and i can tell you this, current gaf is hands down the best gaming forum, at least for my needs, and even tho you're basically the one responsible for creating the monstrosity that is old gaf/resetera, what you have done so far have been truly great

I guess to add to my positive post the only negative is that the game has to be ultra popular here to get a decent amount of people talking about it to feel like a community chat. I’ve given up on stuff like overwatch or rhythm games here as nobody seems interested beyond a post or two and the eventual shit post about people not giving a fuck.

Gaming in general is slow right now. But shit is going to pop off soon when these console makers do their first party reveals for launch, and more third party announcements start flooding in.

The PS5 console reveal itself might break this place, so far it’s held strong with big reveals.

Newgaf is certainly better but not entirely:

+no more easily offended mods like back in the day
+better community now, well almost.
-less popularity and thus not much of an impact when now more than ever is needed to stop the other place

Hopefully, we can change the last bit someday.

I first started lurking here in 2008. It's definitely better now that it's ever been. Certainly much better than it was 3 - 5 years ago with all the REtards who ended up forming ResterEra shitting up the place.
I still remember the exact point when I thought Gaf had become such a shit place. It was a thread about Breath of the Wild before release in which I swear 90% of the posters wanted Link to be changed to female. And I'm pretty sure I got dogpiled for questioning why the hell it was necessary. I was like "What the actual fuck is wrong with this place?"
I love it here now.

I've been around as a lurker since 2008 I guess. And I agree. Elitism was rampant and all that talk about members vs junior members. It was awful in that sense. The split was the best thing because it separated the cool people from the idiots who are living in virtual China.

I'm not familiar with old GAF but I like that we don't have lots of posts flooding any given thread every second. Our community seems pretty active nonetheless and next month should be interesting with more new game announcements.

Yeah we can say back to normal. I'm 40 instead of being in my low 20s so everything changes as well, hence why it seems a bit different. Maybe more mature, depending on users 😂

I was totally agains the idea of splitting up Politics from Off Topic (and splitting permissions) at first, but after seeing how it's played out, I now think it was a great idea. I still think there's some weird issues of people posting topics that aren't necessarily political in the Politics forum, but false positives probably are better than false negatives...

Idk, GAF feels more now like it did in like 07-09ish when I was first posting on here. I miss a lot of people who are gone and the amount of traffic seen, but like RE is way too far for me, and I have eaten numerous bans over there. Not that I haven't gotten a couple here, but yeah, there was a level of groupthink that got out of control here for a bit and is rampant with those who left.

I lurked in 2010 but my account wasn’t approved until like 2012. I only stuck to gaming then. I appreciated the politics section pre schism but I wouldn’t dare say anything for fear of getting banned for being an evil Trump supporter.

Post schism this is my favorite online community I’ve been a part of since Halo.Bungie.Org in the 2004-2011 years.

I ate a ban over there once.

That's how I respond to bans. They said it was only a temp ban, but I informed them it was actually a perm from my side. ;)

GAF is a far more reasonable place.

I distinctly remember 2007-2012 Neogaf, 2012-2017 Neogaf (Zombiegaf if you will), and the aftermath.
It feels like some of the people who were once here but left got "replaced", and I don't mean in a "replaced by other users" way, I mean Invasion of the Body Snatchers, like "I can't believe this is the same person".
And it's not like they were crazy here and mellowed out elsewhere, they were perfectly balanced here and then got deranged.
No, it's not my own perception of things that changed, they definitely got weirder and weirder.
I do know for sure because the people that I remember to be deranged here haven't changed one bit, if anything they got worse.

And this isn't about politics only, console war too. Mods themselves used to encourage trolling of PS3 during the "No Games" era, it was back and forth softcore flaming.
2012-2017 was a complete switch in what was allowed and even the console war themes, some of the leftovers are people sounding like glorified Sony astroturfers.

I wish I could figure out exactly what happened.

I really liked old GAF. Before it went to shit, while we still had the hot babes thread. Off topic was fun and Gaming was beyond great. I liked how big it was, anytime lurking over in the gaming side you could see a developer in a thread answering questions. GAF was a powerhouse and I liked that. So powerful that people like Denis Dyack came here and lost their minds. Restera shouldn't have that or deserve that power.

I really like where GAF is now. It's like an old school message board. Fewer members leads to a more genuine community vibe, and i dig that. It's the reason why I signed up again.

When everyone left, I wanted to go where dudes like blame_space were headed because I figured it'd be a nice way to keep my yucks on the net. Lord, was I ever wrong. The group think overcame and squashed out any opportunity for fun, apart from blame and fat4all.

Joining GAF again has been a blast. Dudes here are so fucking funny. Reminds me of GAF when I joined initially.

It sure is. In 2012, I was a 21 year old, impressionable, edge lord. GAF at the time definitely exposed me to different ways of thinking which warped me further and further left until I finally broke and abandoned Era. I finally feel like myself again, it's chill.

Just had my 14 year achievement here yesterday.

I can safely say that this is the best GAF has ever been, the discussion on most topics are good, with exception to the console warring but that type of discussion has always been difficult to moderate so I'm willing to accept some strife if there is nuance to it.

I'm just glad the site is back on track because the thought of having to use reddit for news and discussion is terrifying and I wouldn't touch Reeee with a 10' pole

That would be correct, this was OG Neogaf's beginning of the end.
It was bearable until 2013ish, then there was a drastic tonal shift (made worse by GG). Everything then became politically charged, and moderation was changed in a way that felt like they had to maintain a precise image, no ifs and buts.

The Iwata logo situation in particular was weird, almost felt like it was contractual.
Neogaf has never been as toxic as the time it tried so hard to be inclusive. By 2017ish a lot of the devs and journalists had already been chased out by the pitchforks.

Now it wouldn't be fun to have them around, because hype culture is fabricated if not a braindead circlejerk, there's no exciting industry news to be revealed (Verum Rex, Bloodborne, Silent Hill reboot were all announced anonymously on 4chan) and most of the modern journalists have no idea what they're talking about.

What time is it?
Before the exodus, this place was becoming a minefield for the opposing viewpoint of the "progressive" hive mind. I do think the course correction has swung a little too far the opposite direction for my tastes, but I'd rather err on the side that allows discussion. The biggest issue I see right now is a lack of members/activity.
