New games from Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and Crazy Taxi - now in development

This is probably the best announcement of the night for unannounced games outside of MH:Wilds. Nice to see Sega trying to bring back some classic properties here instead of yet another fucking Sonic game.

What gets me the most is Streets of Rage 4 had almost nothing to do with Sega. Can't even see "licensed by Sega" anywhere in the game

That said I'd rather have that in 2D vs 3D. Jet Set Radio looking amazing though, feeling the same way about Golden Axe as I am Streets of Rage.

JSR and Crazy Taxi look identical gameplay-wise from the short snippets. 3D Golden Axe? Okay I guess but I can't see that being any different from the endless list of 3D action games from ps2 to now. Shinobi looks like every 2d indie game from the last 10 years.

Sorry to be a downer, but this isn't exciting to me. Maybe I should just stick to retro games for the next decade. That's all these games are anyway.

The only problem I had with 4 was ugly beard Axel. The only blonde with facial hair beat em up protagonist I'll accept is this one brother.

What game is that?

Let's goooooooo

I just hope Sega doesn't set high sales expectations for their "super games" which are mostly niche games.

I'm just so glad Sega is acknowledging their other IPs again. They have WAY too many to just neglect them, good and great ones too! Tired of all the Sonic BS, give the other IPs some love.

I'm a bit skeptical about 3D Streets of Rage and Golden Axe.
Streets of Rage 4 was awesome, they should've stuck to that formula.

I loved every game they showed. But is this the $800 million super "game" that rumors were talking about?

I'm also a bit skeptical about it. Was hoping the SoR4 teams were secretly working on SoR5 behind the scenes, even with this reveal. But I guess they're the ones working on the new Shinobi. So... maybe the 3D game is it? At least Sega is acknowledging SoR's existence, which is a win.

SoR4 is great as it stands, imo it's just as replayable as 2. The team has done their job, so I'm glad they continue with Shinobi. 4 is still gonna be here even if the new one will probably be mid.

Shinobi Looks Awesome.

They Butchered Streets of Rage and Golden Axe.
I was really hoping that wouldn't be the case with Golden Axe. I had commitments to tend to last night and missed all this. So the games were some announced but the dreams of Dreamcast...probably not. I keep hoping Sega will pull that wild card and I think they could; but the only hardware we've gotten from them in the past few years are emus.

That's fair. I'm fine with it either way. I guess I was just hopeful that they may have somehow finished SoR5 somewhere in there. I'm still loving 4 either way.

Golden Axe looks about as misguided as their last attempt with it in the PS3 era but surely they must know that would suck and actually make this one decent instead?
Just the fact that you don't control Tyris Flare only immediately makes this one three times better.

I wonder what the "And more" is going to be... man this was the absolute best thing of the night for me. Still kinda in shock... went back and watched the trailer again, Shinobi and Jet Set looked FANTASTIC. The others i will hold out hope for.

Golden Axe being 3d was the biggest kick in the nuts.

Crazy Taxi looks like it is a multi-player game, we can see up to 4 cars racing each other.

Fuck multi-player. I want a good single player arcade game.

A multiplayer mode where you race to get fares before others could be pretty fun. If it's just a single-player arcade game, that'll get old fast. I love Crazy Taxi, but I would just play the old games if I wanted nothing new.

New Jet Set Radio is enough to make me happy. I'd swap out any of the other games for a new Panzer Dragoon RPG, but I'll take what I can get.

I want something new and I want a decent single player experience.

Watch as everything is GaaS with abusive monetization. Sadly, this has a high risk of actually becoming true if we look at recent price practices from SEGA. They want money more than ever. If all of these games end up being like PSO2, it will be awful.

They will do both: campaign and multiplayer, I am absolutely sure of it. They know who the first target is, and they also understand that you need somz safe way to make good ROI, so they will add multiplayer.

And not all GaaS have abusive monetization: I have been playing Hunt Showdown for 4 years and I spent less than 100€ on useless cosmetics. Just because I wanted to support Crytek. I could have just bought the game (less than 20 bucks) and never spend a dime on it after that.

There are a shit ton of GaaS like that... look also GT7 that added a shit ton of great content for nothing.

Wait & See. Dreamcast times are over and we can't simply rejoice about our favorite franchises coming back, sadly. Because there is always the possibility for a stupid trap to be setup for us. PSO became utter shit (with PSO2) with nightmarish inventory management, billions of shops, quests and currencies only to have you pay to try to make the game somehow manageable. This is the perfect example of a game that won't let you play. As soon as you complete any random quest, your tiny inventory is filled with shit. Don't pick up anything ? Okay great, but now your progress in the game is ruined. Because you need the money and resources.

PSNova on Vita was an awesome game and finally demonstrated how fun PSO2 could be without all the shitty practices. But it is stuck on Vita and of course SEGA will never do again a single player PSO2. They want the money.

SEGA have designed this themselves. They have a lot of experience at trying to take your money. This WILL make the games worse.
At least I have confidence in Lizardcube. Shinobi won't be GaaS poop. Everything else is still unsure.

Looking at it again in slo-mo:
  • Golden Axe looks quite generic, let's hope it gets some character like the old games had. The music was a big part of the original.
  • Streets of Rage also looks generic, the only thing of note is that Skate is in one clip
  • Shinobi looks like Guacamelee. It shouldn't, but it does. Shinobi should look like Shinobi
  • The rest are 3D games based on 3D games, there's less of a challenge there
All in all there's plenty of work to do, and I will remain hopeful about the Mega Drive era games returning but right now it looks like an uphill battle.

I'm still surprised that SoR is going 3D after the success of 4. Everything about that game is great, the only bad thing is Survival buffs and debuffs from the DLC not being available in Story and Arcade modes so that it can have even more replayability.

It's impressive to drop these 5 announcements in the one reel but if you dissect it in any way, it's not nearly as exciting. There's like 5 seconds of each game shown. Jet Set Radio was the only thing in this reel that looked really good to me. Shinobi art style looks a bit too simplistic and like something Klei would make (inspiration from Mark of the Ninja?). Golden Axe and Streets of Rage reminded me of 7th gen action slop like Splatterhouse. Not really feeling Crazy Taxi either, the game world looks dull and empty.

I'd like to think that the Sonic movies basically caused the opposite of what the Final Fantasy movie did with Square. Instead of sinking Sega… again it made all of these possible.

Maybe not but still amusing to think about. Then again if the FF movie succeeded Xenogears 2 wouldn't have had to die.

The few seconds of the Shinobi and Golden Axe reveals, and the trailer of No Rest For The Wicked were the highlights of the show for me.
