new heavenly sword pics

Is it just me, or does the "New" screen of the rope scene look like it's at a COMPLETELY different time of day? Like uhh..night time? Or even overcast (I can't spot a sun, and the sky is cloudy).

Perhaps the difference in HDR and style is becuase it's not the same time of day, and having DOF in a darker scene might look stupid, and extremely bright blooming during night / storm etc would be retarded.

The fog comments are just as fun today as they were 5 years ago with Ico. People just wouldn't accept that the scenes with fog used in that game were more expensive to render than if the fog wasn't there, for the simple reason you could still see all that geometry through the fog, with the huge draw distance :-)

However, the thing with these new screens is that none of the gameplay screens shows obvious use of HDR. There's no HDR glow around anything, and it was very visibly present in this game in just about every media we've see so far.

WOW!! My slight meltdown late last night was bad. :lol

Saying I'm might not buy the game was pretty dumb of me. And the artist didn't change the lighting due to posters concerns on the internet. I confused what I read yesterday.

I'm still not a big fan of the change in the lighting in some of the latest pics, but I most definetly will give these guys the benefit of the doubt.

I guess some of my meltdown came from the absence of videos and new screenshots. I'll dying to see more of this game and Sony is just not giving me anything to look forward to with Heavenly Sword. I don't want small pictures Sony. Give me the videos.

Here's those pictures.

And again, am I the only one noticing the difference in weather and lighting? It's cloudy and dark, perhaps a good reason there is no bloom? It would make sense, yenno.

I'm really looking forward to this game. It's my second most wanted PS3 game behind Metal Gear Solid 4, and to me Metal gear Solid is the best series in the industry. So with that in mind you might understand why I'm vocal about not liking this new look.
I understand your desire for the game to turn out to be everything you want it to be. But I also distrust 98% of NeoGAF's ability to critically analyze next-gen game tech in action based on a compare and contrast of two screenshots. We've had too many instances already where GAFers have sworn there's a downgrade in a game even though the devs themselves have confirmed there isn't. Lighting being what it is for this gen ("vibrant and dynamic" as Nostromo put it) can make effect like normal-mapping seem abundantly apparent in one shot and absolutely absent in another. With lots more dependence on pixel shaders effects this gen, that's only to be expected.

So I think getting this hung up on what you think you see in a miniaturized screenshot is still way overboard.

Cloudy and dark??

I see a blue sky with barely any clouds in most pics. And there probably is HDR effects in there its just that you aren't noticing it because it's properly used (unlike 90% of other games). Real life doesn't shine like if everything was made of gold powder. ;)

Yeah after sleeping last night I've come to the point that I'm probably looking too far into it. I'm nitpicking if you will. I apologize for the meltdownz. I'm just sooooo eagered to see the game in motion again.

The wait is horrible. And I started to go nuts last night. :lol

i agree with everything you say - but i have to ask (and this isn't aimed at Nostromo and crew because i'm big fans of what they are doing with HS) how confident that devs tell you the absolute truth about thier game mid-dev ?

It does if you have cataract. :)

I had it on one eye. In the early stages I did see the world as in all these overbloomed HDR games (Oblivion). Very annoying.

fair, but I honestly think these screens look nicer that the blur (due to vid compression prob) of the last pics...I think it is a bit premature here considering the size of the pics. It isnt like the case with Mass Effect where there was clearly a disparity in what was shown (I dont believe that game has been downgraded either, just that some of the shots were touched up)

peace

That's bad. So i understand that cataract can be cured? (seriously, i don't know much about those)

The fog is definitely artsistic. It isn't even hiding anything?!

Just making it look very damp, like it would be in this kind of environment with waterfalls.

I wish they would just making it a different color. I mean it's just green. Why green?

How confident? More confident than I am about GAFers ability to accurately discern real downgrades in next-gen games. It's not a free pass for devs, but I'm not talking about the change from a target render to actual game here, rather actual in-game screenshots that are reported to present one build and the next.

I dunno, did these same people believe Bioware in regards to Mass Effect (which demonstrated a significantly greater discrepancy)? :P

Like I said: No matter if it's a technical downgrade or purely an artistic decision, that level looks worse to me now. :p I wasn't making a scene because 'omg they cut teh polygons' I was making a scene because it looks worse then before. :)

Yeah, I don't see any technical "downgrades". The character model looks better than it ever has. But the changes to the lighting make the environments look flat and bland. I wasn't the biggest fan of super HDR blur-o-vision, but in the Heroes footage the light diffraction and mist made everything look really vast. Now it's just puke haze.

Gamepro just added a batch of new artworks (amazingly f'd up with a huge "GAMEPRO.COM WHERE GAMERZ GO FIRST LOL !1!!1one" right in the middle of the arts... sigh)

God, that really sucks :(

IGN updated their release date list today, and Heavenly Sword went from "TBA 2007" to "August 2007".

So now, there's one big game for each month in summer.

June - Ninja Gaiden Sigma
July - Lair
August - Heavenly Sword

May is slim pickings, unless Rainbow 6 turns out good...

Does The Darkness come out in May or June?

HS will be September according to the SCE WW insider in the Sony Cambridge thread.

Warhawk should be around that time as well..

I've never seen a summer schedule so packed.

Well nAo's saying there's been no actual downgrade so I trust that but the artists need to undo whatever they've done because those screens don't look as good as some of the other media I've seen.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to new video footage of the latest build.

I think Warhawk is still September. But at that point, you can pretty much take your pick, there's going to be ridiculous games on both next-gen platforms this fall.

I thought Phil said late Summer @ GDC. I can't see how that game be so far away. The game looks pretty far ahead.
