New Horizon: Zero Dawn Gameplay from the TGS 2016 Media Session

They've showed us scripted scenarios at best, I don't want to see the whole game, I just want to see woke natural free roam gameplay of climbing and traversal. But it's like they're so hesitant to show that.

Missions. It's missions they've shown. And that's exactly what they should be showing. In fact they need to show more so we can get an idea of the variety the game will offer. That and the story is the only thing that can let the game down at thus point.

Most people would find a developer presented walkabout and climbing demonstration to be quite dull which is why it would be daft to do it.

It's definitely fair to wonder about how "open world" it really is. A lot of the stuff we've seen seems to have mountains surround you on your left and right, with a wide space in between.

If my assumptions are correct here about places you CAN'T traverse (and I could well be wrong), this particular area at least does seem to be a more Destiny like thing, with an open area and paths to go elsewhere to other areas. I HOPE that's not the case. We'll see.

I think I remember them mentioning at E3 this was the starting area so I've no doubt it will open up more after the beginning of the game. But, there's of course no way you're going to be able to climb every mountain and there will be times where you can only get to certain places via a specific canyon or whatever. I think that's pretty clear from the footage. I'm sure there will be places which will only open up at specific points in the story or after certain missions are completed as well.

It's definitely not going to be a big square map where you can go in any direction at any point like a Bethesda game. But it's also going to be a much better designed world and not feel like places are just randomly generated. In theory anyway.

Ummm.. I doubt that since Zelda Breath of the Wild's demonstration was just free roaming for the most part and people had an absolute blast and were excited just on that alone.

No, they showed quite a bit of combat as well, same as Guerrilla Games. If all they demonstrated was a bit of free-roaming and climbing it would have been painfully dull.

They may show more exploration later on, discovering lost ruins and different civilisations and such but that might spoil things, especially in a narrative heavy game.

Character interactions are weak af. VO and expressions both seem off.

Reminds me of the first time I cracked up while watching someone playing Mass Effect. Two characters intensely giving each other the thousand yard stare for what feels like forever before one of them finally says something. Awkward as fuck, but how else are you supposed to let the player take their time to decide what they want their character to say? I guess you could freeze time while the dialogue menu is open.

Well that's what I meant by free roaming. That's basically doing whatever while roaming the environment with no set goal.

Combat is a part of free-roaming. Basically, he means just showing off non-story-specific emergent gameplay in an open-world setting; ie combat, exploration, hunting, loot, crafting, etc.

I dont get how it would change outside a story though ,we see majority of the things you mention.

God daamnit that's a lot of previews/footage to avoid in that time-span. ;_;
I'm gonna try
and fail miserably probably lol.
Yeah just wait until the night gameplay drops one day :p

We do, but without trying to complete the quest, we can see the depth of these mechanics through them taking their time. Specifically exploration, but the other stuff, too.

Best footage yet. Absolutely amazing atmosphere and world creation. The dialog has been improved from what we saw and at e3.
Not so much of a bold prediction anymore given all that we've seen and heard, but this game is going to be both a critical and commercial hit. Willing to be served a big serving of rotting crow if I'm wrong!

I see. Well, we've seen all of those within the context of the missions, which for me is the most important thing. Integrating the different mechanics into the general gameplay and making them actually useful. But, Guerrilla have used the dreaded "accessible" word, so I don't think things like skill trees, crafting is going to have too much depth. If people are hoping for some sort of hunting, crafting etc metagame outside of the context of the missions I think they're gonna be disappointed.

But to really get an idea of things, Guerrilla need to show off a much bigger area further on in the game. I'd like to see some environmental discoveries like caves and ruins. And Id like to see one of the hunting side quests they've mentioned and see what benefits there are to actually doing these missions, if there are any at all, outside of experience and crafting materials.

Personally, I'm hoping for some optional superboss like you get in a Final Fantasy which drops your ultimate weapon but I think I'm hoping for too much there :p

Ah ok gotcha.

They about stuff hunting trials which they compare to FFXII apparently.

You do nee dot hunter animals for various reasons:
Yes you can - for food, crafting, trading.

TW3 does have conversations that look and sound weird, but they also have some great ones. Horizon looks bad across the board thus far. We haven't seen much though, and there's a decent amount of time left, so I'm hopeful things will improve.

Unless one expects Naughty Dog quality facial animations and voice acting from all games, I think what we have here is perfectly competent. Certainly not bad.

Yeah that's what I meant earlier. It's not a negative if done right but I'm not expecting something like Assassin's Creed open-endness or Witcher 3's.

Yeah, the FFXII comparison sounds good. Hopefully that means some epic side bosses. :p

My favourite thing I've read about the game is the old gamesradar preview:

When it comes to this world, we've apparently not seen anything yet, either. Guerrilla has revealed that there will be ancient cities to explore and vast old remains of previous civilisations. We've only encountered small settlements so far, but in her quest to find the answers of her heritage, Aloy will explore enormous areas that once belonged to her original non-robot hunting ancestors. The studio is remaining tight lipped on details but says some of these will be tied into the narrative, others will just be uncovered through exploration.

Just stumbling across something like that would be fucking epic.

Watched for 30 or so seconds. Looks pretty damn good. Very much want to play. Stopped watching.
I am not going to watch anything else and just wait to play it at release.

it's the only way to design it around the strength (or weakness) of the console and output a game that can beat third party competition on graphics (but with less ambition on scale)
Youy'll be able to say it's the more beautifull open world rpg on ps4 because lot of effort will be put on things you can only get with lot of ressources

Dialog seems awkward, and combat a bit clunky, even the developers were having trouble doing things they wanted to do. Game looks and sounds great (albeit with some pop in and seemingly some frame rate issues) but seems very atypical otherwise, and to be honest it was kind of boring. Maybe just not my type of game anymore.

Combat looks much better than any RPG outside of Souls and Bloodborne.

That's because he was trying to replicate what was shown in the e3 demo, but of course the creatures didn't just do the same things

Wow, incredible. The foliage looks amazing even on the original PS4.

Foliage is easily one of my favorite visual improvements of this gen. I LOVE IT. This game and UC4 have been the latest ones to blow me away but there have been many.

Edit: HOLY CRAP, just started watching blim's video (been waiting for the 1080p stream to process) and the foliage..I mean...it's unbelievable. SO MUCH GRASS.

Hopefully this gif shows up. Still don't really know a good place to upload gifs.

I have absolutely no problem with this and welcome the approach. A more focused and well-designed approach to open-world. Also a way to direct the player more and give them a more focused narrative.

Everything I've seen about Horizon has looked fantastic. I think this is Guerilla's breakout hit.

Just watched all the footage. Looks amazing; I am so excited for this game, and the RPG aspects even look a bit deeper than I had expected. Most of all I want to explore the environment because I think it looks beautiful and amazing.

This is obviously just the starting area after you leave Aloy's town, so I think it's obviously going to open up a lot more than that once Aloy gets beyond this region.

There are roads around those mountains and inside them as well.

She can climb mountains as well

Ugh, that would be AMAZING. My hopes for this game would probably double. Have a hard time believing it's true though since they've been advertising this as an open world game.
