Hang out with Steve.
A new 6GB iPod mini has been added for $249. The 4GB iPod Mini is now $199. iPod Photo prices dropped tremendously -- the 30GB is $349, and the 60GB is $449 ($150 less than before). Here's the total line-up:

iPod shuffle (unchanged)
512MB - $99
1GB - $149

iPod mini (available in 4 colors, 18 hours battery life)
4GB - $199
6GB - $249

iPod (40GB model dropped)
20GB - $299

iPod U2
20GB - $349

iPod Photo (prices reduced)
30GB - $349
60GB - $449

I hate (and am a sucker for) that incremental pricing shit.

I would be fine with a mini for £139. But the 6GB is only £30 more.

Oh look, then the 20GB mono one is only £30 more. But then colour and 50% more space and photos for only £50 more.....and so it goes on.

Missed a spot, Steve:

Apple also introduced the new iPod Camera Connector, due in late-March for $30. The optional accessory enables customers to connect their digital camera to iPod photo and import their photos into the iPod. "By simply connecting the iPod Camera Connector and a digital camera, customers can easily transfer digital images to their iPod photo." The iPod photo includes earbud headphones, a USB 2.0 cable, and a USB power adapter. - MacNN

Glad to see they darkened the colors on the Minis more; I think the pastel colors threw some people off. Interesting to note that the 20GB model is now sitting idly by, while the rest of the line-up has gotten a fresh clean-up so far this year. Makes me wonder if it'll be updated this year; I suspect it has to be.

ipod 20GB is sitting in an important price point though. Its the value option for 'hold all your music'. Once they've got that decision out of you, they tempt you with the photos and more storage.

cool, now I'm going to probably forgo the Ipod shuffle in favor of a mini...

the only question it what color, I'm thinking probably blue...

damn, the Apple Education store is tempting to hold off till I gather a bit more cash...

IPod photo 30gb = $319

that's $20 more than regular people pay for the regular Ipod...

And so it begins...

...I was thinking Shuffle by the Summer... I still think I will... but the new price on the 4GB Mini is really tempting... Damn you Apple.

*eye twitches*

MOTHER-FUCK-OF-ALL-FUCKING-FUCKS(!)(!)(!) -- I just plonked down AU$600 on a 40GB iPod today (which is equivalent to the new price of a 60GB iPod Photo)! Once again I get screwed up the ass when it comes to purchasing and timing. Fuck!

awww damn I knew about this yesterday Apple is like that always visit Mac Rumors before buying

I'm hoping it'll blow oversoon, but as of right now my 40GB iPod -- sitting right here in front of me in it's nice little dock -- is like having the bastard child you never wanted. I'm trying to love it, I want to love it, but deep down... it's hurting.

then just return the product new (do you have that option?)

First thing I'll be doing in the morning. Here's hoping...

No color screen for the new mini? What happened to that rumor?

There's no point in having a color screen on the Minis at this point, save to add a bullet to the feature list and reduce Apple's margins. That was wishful thinking if anything.

Wow, so if you want more than 20 gigs you have to move up to a photo. Damn you Apple!

My 40 isn't anywhere near filled but being able to dump photos directly to the ipod without an accessory is tempting.

bastards!

I hate to say it, but your an idiot for not watching the rumor mill. Apple is notorious for constantly updating the iPod line. The ONLY time you should EVER buy one is right after a product refresh. If you buy an iPod any other time you risk having them announce new ones the next day.

It's been two weeks since I sent my iPod into Apple for repairs (busted screen) and I still haven't gotten it back. I'm starting to get a bit pissed. I'm calling them later today.

Hm, I'd want to get my hands on the 60gig photo one, but the lag I heard about turned me off to it.

Don't believe FUD unless you experience the issue yourself. Go to an Apple store & play around with one. If it's too "laggy" for you, don't buy one :)

If not the option to return, do they have the option of Pricematching. Some stores offer an up to 30 day pricematch incase you find it at another place (or same place) for a cheaper price.

Oh, it's noticibly laggy compared to the monochrome iPods. I sincerely hope that they introduce a 5G, non-photo iPod this summer, since today's news doesn't do anything to make me want to replace my too-small 3G now. <SIGH>

My fiancee wants to get me an iPod shuffle, but I haven't been keeping up. Sionce I have terabytes of mp3 at home, I wouldn't mind something to listen to while I'm at the gym. I burn alot of my audio book mp3 to CDRW and listen to them on the way into work, but I could do stuff around the house and keep up on my reading. been wanting an mp3 player for a couple years now but haven't done my research. What do you guys think?

The regular Ipod is the best one. :D

Not anymore. I'd say the 30GB iPod photo is #1 now.

For $50 more you get the following:
30GB
Color screen with twice the resolution of iPod
Better Battery
and the semi-worthless ability to hold and show photos

Plus, it's only a $40 difference ($319 - $279) if you get it with an edu discount.

I'm tempted to sell my iPod as soon as I get it back from repairs and then buy this new model. I love the color screen on the photo. Plus, the photo feature is slightly better now that there will be an accessory to rip photos right off your camera into you iPod. Instant portable storage for your digital camera.

I know Belkin already has the media reader, but this is a much better option, as it lets you look at the photos when you move them over.

Shit, by that logic one should never buy an iPod; prices are always restructured by either Apple, or some online retailer....or EBay.

well the ipod "photo" will probably become the standard model. there's no need for the standard ipod anymore. seeing as how they dropped the 40GB version, i'm assuming my guess is correct.
i'm happy with my regular ipod in all respects, aside from the battery life. i'm thinking of replacing the internal battery with a higher capacity one. perhaps i'll let the current one run out of charge a bit more though.

The old iPod mini is only $179.99 now at Amazon (I won't link because I love GAF and want them to get cash moneys). Problem is it won't have the awesome new battery life.

I bought a 40GB iPod couple days ago from Office Max for $360 (They had $40 off on it, I guess because they knew it was being phased out) but I didn't open it yet because I read about the new pod rumors. But after reading the announcements, I think I'm gonna go ahead and open the thing up. I'd rather have 10 more gigs than crappy photo playback (220x176 is gonna pale compared to my Clie's 480x320).

Man, I don't know what to do.

I really want a PSP since it can do MP3's and play MPEG4 files (portable Naruto!) and I'm sure there will be games down the line that I really want.

But I also would enjoy the ease of carrying around an iPod since it would play MP3's and act as a portable HDD.

Any suggestions?

The iPod Photo has gone back on my list for having the direct camera connection feature. Still, I can't help feeling that I have to hang on for Apple to add another feature to take the plunge. Maybe I'll just plump for the iTunes phone when it's out.

Buy both. I'm umming and aahing about an ipod, as I'm not a huge music person - but its almost worth buying for the photo transfer option on its own. Transfer and view (to make sure they made it), on the move, with plenty of storage.

And it means all the space on my PSP memory card can be reserved for movies :)

But seriously, it depends what you want. If mp3 is high up your list, forget the PSP. It does play them, but its clumsy to navigate, unless you just want an ipod shuffle type experience. If you want games/movies, then forget the ipod for obvious reasons.

I'm a huge music fan, I listen to it regularly at work, when jogging, etc. That said, I just sold my 20 gig 2G iPod to help fund the purchase of a PSP. I also just purchased an iPod shuffle, because it meets my needs 100%, plus the form factor is very appealing to me.

My answer? Get a mini and a PSP.
