New Line Home Entertainment is the latest Hollywood studio to commit to Sony's proprietary Universal Media Disc, which plays movies and video games on the PlayStation Portable device.

Its first six titles will go on sale Oct. 4 for $19.98 each: "Elf," "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (2003), "The Butterfly Effect," "Freddy vs. Jason," "Blade" and "Secondhand Lions."

With more than 1.3 million units sold in the U.S., home entertainment studios are embracing the UMD format. Of the majors, only Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and DreamWorks Home Entertainment have yet to commit.

More than 130 UMD movies are slated to ship this year, which tops the number of games heading to Sony's portable entertainment device.

"It wouldn't surprise me if PSP movies end up with a 3-to-1 tie ratio on PSP," Arcadia Research video game analyst John Taylor said. "To date, the game tie ratio is around 2.5 games to every one PSP hardware unit sold, which is somewhat lower than expected -- in part because of the availability of movies."

Unless I see a surge of like... 100 more UMD Videos this year, I call BS on the slated 130 UMD's by the end of the year. Just give me Fight Club and Napoleon Dynamite and we'll call it even.

Buh?

....
130 UMD movies? Is Sony going to open this format up? Are we going to see standalone UMD players? I just can't see the PSP userbase supporting that scale of UMD movies.

I don't think it is BS. starting in July there are like 5 UMD movies coming out a week.

They already have. Anyone can make a UMD movie player.

Seeing UMD movies sell so well makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. :D The kicker is that games are selling well too.

People should be happy UMD movies are selling well. It'll lead to a price reduction in titles. May not happen this year but it will happen.

I give it six months before UMD movies exceed game sales. This has been foreseen, and it shall be.

Although, the 2.5/1 tie ratio for games is pretty damn impressive as well.

Why lower prices if titles are selling well at existing prices?

I also thought UMD's would bomb (unless they released an UMD burner to spread the format), along with Nintendogs and Brain Training. What is happening to gaming? :(

If you think it's big now, wait until the PSP is more affordable.

edit: I could see other companies releasing portable UMD players.

is UMD resolution too small for standard TVs

like if ps3 had a UMD slot or something along those lines

If you check old threads you'll see quite a few people felt that they wouldn't sell. That's why you see so much anger in the new threads because they are selling.

Great news. I really hope my fave movies will end up on there. I mean, at least the blockbuster movies...they gotta be on there. I'm not so interested in some of these titles being mentioned...it's not like they did so well at theatres and DVDs to begin with. Plus, I already got a lot of the ones mentioned on DVD...

Announce new movies...and you'll get my attention. Batman Begins DVD and UMD simultaneous launch...that would be awesome.

They seem to be releasing the perfect movies on UMD format for their targeted audience. Look at the selection and it really screams gaming geek. Except of course Are we there Yet and Hitch (though I actually enjoyed Hitch, not enough to buy it on UMD). And you will see more and more day and dates with DVD. Look at Sin City.

Not sure about the resolution (I don't own one yet), but I know that the movies are 16:9 standard, so it might not work on regular TVs? Also, if the PS3 played UMD movies, Sony would basically be competing against itself. I don't think Sony want's people choosing UMD over their DVD's and Blu-Ray cds. I think Sony wants to keep the UMD format protable. Perhaps that's why the PSP has no video out.

That would be crazy. I think most people were forseeing that UMD movies would bomb.

I can see however how that buying them makes lots of sense for frequent travellers, or parents how want their kids to have something to watch in the car, for example. When you're paying $500 for a transatlantic flight ticket, paying $15 on top of that doesn't seem like much.

I'm pretty sure I've read UMD videos are encoded at the same resolution as standard DVDs, but MPEG4 compression allows them to be stored at smaller disc capacity.

Shaolin Soccer? Replacement Killers? Kung Fu Hustle? Definitely picking those up among others.... I'd like to see House of Fury get a US DVD/UMD release.. it's a nice light flick with good camerawork and good martial arts sequences... the little kid who is the staff user... goddamn....

To date, the game tie ratio is around 2.5 games to every one PSP hardware unit sold, which is somewhat lower than expected...
Say what, John Taylor? What's the average tie ratio for a game system, 3-4 months into its life?

Well if what you say is correct, that sounds like a good plan!

Sin City sounds awesome...I had no idea that was coming out.

Kung Fu Hustle...that too!

I do wish you could rent these as well...

holy crap, 1.3 million

with New Line on board, hopefully we'll get LOTR soon :D
and seeing as how New Line is a division of Warner, maybe we'll see them hop on board soon too.

Yeah, that came out on the 5th, if my list is still correct.

I just counted all the US titles for 2005 (going by my list ). 182. :-O

That includes the album/music-related umds (stuff like "Nirvana: Nevermind Classic Album"), but even forgetting those, that's pretty crazy.

That is almost offensive. :p I would imagine, if anything, that the average geek actually has at least somewhat better taste than the average joe. That is the main reason why the success of UMD movies are surprising to me, because of the almost entirely disgusting selection of titles.

Anyway, now throw down the Lord of the Rings, bitches.

Napoleon Dynamite is out. I know because I own it.

UMDs are really starting to come out and get good. I only own T2 and Napoleon Dynamite but there's a lot of good UMDs on that list. I will support this platform since I know there will be a DVD + UMD player coming soon so there's no reason to skip out. I'll probably snag Predator this week too.

From Ponn01's list, I want:

Team America
Man of the House
Not Another Teen Movie
American Pie
Dave Chappelle
Richard Pryor
Family Guy

At $19 or less, thats $140. Eh, not that bad. I know Disney has Sin City coming to it too.

Lord of the Rings is really the only thing that list is missing besides Star Wars. Oh and Jaws. Seriously though, look how fast they got Tron out on UMD.

I wish I had linked to the 10 or so threads where I've gotten reamed for suggesting UMD movies were gonna do well.

By the end of the year UMD movies is going to need their own section in the DVD department. If not sooner. Not going to be able to stick them in the game case with the games anymore! The boxes are small enough they could pack many of them in a section anyway.

amazing..

I could see myself buying a UMD movie if I was going on a trip. Actually, I am going on a cruise later this year - I'll probably pick one or two up^^

Speaking of... is there a release date for FF: advent children yet?

1) Lower resolution (on the PSP screen anyway) than DVD
2) Higher Cost
3) Extras stripped out
4) Only works on a single platform

= HIT SUCCESS!

I thought it could be viable if they released the titles @ ~$10-$13 or so, but the new titles are $29.99 and the back catalog titles are $19.99 (MSRP), with many stores selling them for some discount from these (say $5 usually).

I guess the "portable" factor trumps all.
