Black album out here saving lives and some people are like “saint angry bad!!!”
Good choice. If she had picked some of that massively auto tuned shit passing as pop music these days the cougar might've thought it was a mating call :l

They should start doing country and drop this cornball shit. There is no going back to what they were.

Exactly, thats why i said it. Metallica is not a good metal band anymore. James cant sing metal anymore. If there was anything else they were ever gonna do, its country.
Funny as he tried his hand with country on 'Load', don't remember the name but was one of the better ones too. I like Metallica faaaar prefer Faith No More. Funnily enough Mike Patton did one too on 'King For a Day.

It's not bad. Metallica used to be my favorite band 20 years ago. I haven't listened to anything post St. Anger, but I enjoyed this.

One song on Load had steel guitar. That’s as country as they ever got, the rest of the album is hard blues and it’s legit great. My username on old GAF was The Outlaw Torn because that’s still one of their best songs…

Think that's when they fired newstead. Got Trullio though and that dude is a bass genius.

Was a massive fan of Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves. (his old bands) :D

It's not so far fetched considering James' affinity to the genre. Mama Said being a good preview of what it could sound like.

Metallica died with Cliff Burton and Bob Rock burned the corpse.
Bob Rock launched them into the stratosphere with the Black Album.

Cliff is one of and arguably the greatest metal bassists of all time, can't argue his influence on the genre and band when it came to song writing.

Seriously, brother. You think their music improved after Rock took over?
I think the Black Album was fantastic. They tried new things with Load, Reload and St Anger. Garage, Inc was a great cover album. Nothing will ever top the OG albums, such is any artist in music.

Well I won't knock anyone who likes the later music; accounting for taste and all that, but you can't deny that once they dropped the Black album, they ceased to be a thrash band.

They certainly found a new fanbase from that point, and all opinions on their music are subjective but, objectively, they ceased to be thrash (you could even argue they ceased to be metal, and became hard-rock), and that's something I'll always be a little bitter about.

Moving away from strictly thrash, I agree with. They seem to be starting to incorporate some of that back in along with some Rob Trujillo styled influences in their songwriting since he joined the band.

With that said, my 3 favorite albums from them are Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets and And Justice for All. Master just edging the other two out for the godly Disposable Heroes riffs.

And what do you base this presumption on? If you know anything about Burton's history or his reported personality, it seems to me that he would be the least likely of the four to have anything to do with Bob Rock or that style of music.

Master of Puppets is my personal pick for greatest metal album of all time. Unfortunately, while it could have been god-tier, Justice is tainted by Ulrich's decision to all but remove Jason from the final mix. Mental shit, that.

Agreed with both points.

This is a well done version that has it restored and not overcorrected like some others.

Good song, not great. Loved Hardwired so I hope the new album is more of that. And who am I kidding, I'm buying the album on release regardless.

This is great but I feel like AJFA songs need to be played with a pick. The isolated master tracks off Guitar Hero and Rock Band show what an animal Jason was and how hard he picked:

Lars' mix fuckery is still baffling.

Agreed. They were young grieving bitter cunts back then.

On a side note... I like Het's honesty, lol
Speaking on the album to The New Yorker, Hetfield said: “Eh, it’s honest,” with a shrug. “You might not identify with it, or you don’t like the sound. But that’s where we were, and that’s what we put out. It’ll have its time, maybe.” He laughed. “Maybe not!”

The band survived the backlash, and Hetfield added that after its reception, “It was the four of us in a room with our instruments, looking at each other and going, ‘OK, it starts again, right now, in this moment.’”

Basing mine on the same presumptions you are. Purely speculation because he’s dead and nobody really knows. He was also into classical music and jazz and was a musical genius so it’s possible that he would have ventured away from that style when he hit his middle years. Just a guess though. Back then when he died not one one person would have guessed Metallica would have turned out they way they did.

Yeah, I just don't think so. Knowing what I know of Burton, first of all, Bob Rock would never have been in the equation and, if he were, I suspect Burton would have told him to fuck off, and left the band if he didn't.

Burton was arguably the main force of gravity that made Metallica what they were in the 80s. It stands to reason that he would have kept them there had he not died.

If you think Lars is capable of anything impressive in 2022 then shame on you.

I wasn’t feeling the track. Back to Immutable.

Honestly, he never was capable of anything impressive. I saw them once in '89, for the Justice tour, and the crowd was chanting for Frayed Ends of Sanity. It clearly wasn't on their set list, but they tried it anyway. Lars fucked that song up so bad they just bailed on it and never finished it.

Dyers Eve had some face-melting drums, but read the liner notes and see how the drums were "engineered" on that track. As far as I know, they never even attempted that song live until the early 2000s and it's easy to see why. Lars is way out of his depth.

Which is, you know, whatever. He is what he is. But he's so fucking full of himself that it makes his lack of skill that much more pronounced. If he wasn't such a douchebag, I don't think most people would care.

I saw them at the Cow Palace in 2004, happened to be home for spring break and my buddy who was still in high school was like dude we're going to see Metallica tomorrow. As I recall they said it was the second time they played Dyer's Eve live, and can confirm Lars played it like that (without the full double bass).

Which is kinda surprising given he'll kick it up for Fight Fire with Fire, which makes me wonder if he's just too lazy.

EDIT:

Hah I was right, here's the set list from that night:

Fight Fire with Fire doesn't have the sustained double bass like Dyers Eve has. It's more like what he does in Battery.

Thanks for the idea :)

As I suspected, Frayed Ends was not on the list at the show I went to.

I know but his feet are moving just as fast here, so makes me wonder if he just doesn't have the stamina:

And I get it I know when I take too much time off my feet and wrists get fatigued much faster but come on, it's your job dude...I wonder if he just doesn't take pride in his drumming, because some daily rudiments would probably help immensely.

Metallikatz.

My first concert on my own was Master of Puppets(86). Energetic, noisy and fun. Went through at least 2 store copies that I can remember of Kill Em All on cassette by that point from wearing them out.

Haven't been much of a fan of their later albums. The last song of their that I really dig so far

And it's different from this new stuff.

I think it's a stamina thing. Look around the 2:54 mark, the hammer on his left bass drum isn't even moving. Those should both be going during that point in the song. And he's skipping beats throughout, masking it with the snare and cymbals. It's pretty obvious on my stereo. It does sound like he's nailing it for the solo, so I think he's just pacing himself. If he went all out prior, he'd probably fold during the solo.

It's a brutal job as the years take their toll.

To be fair, I almost never use my left pedal unless I'm doing a sustained double bass or if I'm trying to get more power/louder with each hit. I much rather have it free for the high hat pedal (not that Lars does much with that either).

Somethings wrong, shut the light
Heavy thoughts tonight
And they aren't of Snow White
Dreams of war, dreams of liars
Dreams of dragon's fire
And of things that will bite, yeah
Yes you're quoting one of the biggest hits of all time, alright, yeeaahhuhhhhhhh!

There are far more cheesy lyrics in bands out there.

This just sounds like typical metal fantasy drivel.
