Modest Mouse's new video was released to fans via the online newsletter a few days ago. When I first watched it, I was absolutely stunned. It's such an excellent video. I love the concept, and it's filmed and pulled off SO WELL. I've never teared up watching a music video before this. I honestly, after 2 days, think this is one of the best music videos ever. I'd be really interested in hearing everyone's opinions about it.

It's available at www.modestmousemusic.com or direct links are below:

it was a nice concept which turned out okay. definitely not the best video ever, though. in my opinion that would go to blur's coffee&tv. this one reminded me much of that blind melon song with the fat tap-dancing bumblebee.

Eh, it's okay. There are tons and tons of videos that are better.

Until the last 20 seconds, I was going to comment on how much I like videos that don't show the group singing and playing.

out of the last 5 years of following modest mouse and meeting issac on various occasions, I think this is the first time I have ever seen him smile.

kinda creepy actually.

That sucked... nothing I hate more about videos when the band isn't shown playing.

This better be a joke.

I liked the video. Someone previously mentioned it reminding them of the Blind Melon song and it did the same for me. Must've been the fields I guess.

For the pepole who are saying it's nowhere near their top 10/20, will you guys post a list? I kind of wanted this to lead into a more general discussion about music videos anyway.

The things I love about this video are numerous. First, it does a great job of taking the basic framework of the song and creating a story that sort of works with it but isn't just a frame by frame representation of what's in the song.

The cinematography is beautiful. There is a very timeless, classic, sweeping feel to the video with the huge, sprawling sunflower fields and the picturesque farm. The colors are very warm and the whole video has a sort of warm, soft feel.

The story works very well. The director does a great job of slowling building the narrative. And like Element mentioned, seeing Isaac Brock smile is almost creepy. The point about 2:50 in the video where the child's dream sequence starts literally had me tearing up. It's a combination of the revelation that it's just a dream and the poor kid is still alone and seeing Brock actually smiling, frolicking, and having fun.

I also loved the band popping up at the end. That was a great way to give them some video time and also give some broader background about the child that supported the story.

And of course, the song is excellent. The album is an instant classic, and this song is no exception.

A few off the top of my head:

Sigur Ros - "Untitled #1"
Johnny Cash - "Hurt"
Massive Attack - "Special Cases"
Bjork - "Human Behaviour"
Kenna - "Hellbent" (although I dislike seeing the original short film modified, it works well)
Fatboy Slim - "Weapon of Choice"

My mind's a little blank right now... and impaired by alcohol. I can't really think. Those are particularly great videos I have on my computer though.

Top whatever

Hurt - Johnny Cash
Sabotage - Beastie Boys
Madonna - Ray Of Light
Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity
Chemical Brothers - Let Forever Be
Fatboy Slim - With Christopher Walkin
Green Day- Walking Contradiction
Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up
Foo Fighters - Everlong
UNKLE - Rabbit in your headlights lyrics
Radiohead - The one with the SCUBA guy
The Bjork video where everyone spontaneously burst into song. - It's Oh so quiet
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Can't Stop
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication
Red Hot Chili Peppers - OtherSide

The Crow 4: FIELDS OF FATTIES

I'd say the Blind Melon video it resembles is even better than it, but I still like the video. The best part for me being the boy dragging him behind.

As someone already mentioned, Blur's Coffee & TV definitely ranks up there. Damn I love that video.

all of Tool's videos (prison sex being my favorite, but they're all great)
all of Bjork's videos
Pearl Jam's videos for Jeremy and Do the Evolution
Gorillaz' videos
pretty much all of the Smashing Pumpkins videos (disarm, rocket, today, tonight tonight, zero, 1979, etc. etc.)
most of Radiohead's videos
Weezer's video for Buddy Holly, of course
Beastie Boys - Sabotage
tons of others....

I know this discussion is more along the lines of videos, but I'm just not impressed with new Modest Mouse material...at all.

Coffee and TV is one of the greaaaaaatest songs of all time, and the video that goes along with it complements its greatness perfectly.

But Graham Coxon's Bitersweet Bundle of Misery is getting mixed up with Coffee and TV in my head, and that may mean that Coffee and TV isn't as respected in my head as I thought.

Yeah, the video is pretty blah. I guess it's not too bad, but that's just a testament of how wretched videos are nowadays.

Christ, things really have changed. A little over ten years ago, there were amazing video being done left and right, even mainstream stuff. Stuff from Josh Taft, Matt Mahurin, Peter Care, Anton Corbin, David Fincher, and quite a few others. But today... it's like a creative wasteland.

I like some of Michel Gondry and Spike Jonze's stuff. David Fincher did a couple decent videos, too.

Overall, though, I'm really disappointed by your guys' choices. I was really hoping for some surprises but you all pretty much listed off the usual suspects. I guess I'm in the minority in thinking that a great music video is more than just a good song and a visually interesting concept. Take the Coffee & TV video. It's cute/funny/clever, but what beyond that? Nothing really.

Some of my favorite videos:

Fatboy Slim - Weapon of Choice
R.E.M. - Imitation of Life
Weezer - Buddy Holly
Sigur Ros - Untitled #1
Rammstein - Du Hast
Pixies - Head On

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but my choices were based entirely on the merits of the video. To be honest, I'm not terribly fond of U2, just to give you an idea. Also, there were a few that I left out just for the sake of cutting it off at a nice, round number. Anyway, a visually interesting concept is what makes or breaks a music video, it's - arguably - how they're judged. If you exclude that, what's left? "Uh, nice close-up of that guy?"
