Messiah Debuts Generation NEX Console

Los Angeles, CA, USA –May 23, 2005 –Messiah Entertainment Inc. unveils a new 8-bit console for classic gaming. At only 1.5 inches tall, Generation NEX is Messiah’s slim and sexy micro version of the beloved Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Generation NEX revives the cherished classics of the past, redefining retro gaming as we know it.

Messiah brings next generation technology to classic gaming. Generation NEX is the first console featuring built-in 2.4 GHz wireless controller support. In addition to wireless gaming, the system has two controller ports for use with all your favorite original NES accessories including the four-player adapter and Zapper light gun.

Not divided by region, Generation NEX incorporates two cartridge slots allowing NES and FamiCom™ game play. Both slots feature a direct connection between the cartridge and the system. No more power-light blinking and blowing on game cartridges.

Brad Strahle, Messiah’s President, considers the Generation NEX to be one of the most important retro products available. “With the release of Generation NEX, we want the core gamer to know that we have not forgotten our roots. Classic gaming is where it all began and with Generation NEX the classics will live on.” Strahle continued, “All gamers will love playing their favorite retro games on the Generation NEX and enjoy them with a new passion.”

And from the FAQ, in case you were wondering how they planned on adding a rumble feature when NES games weren't written to support it (I know I was):

Q: How does the rumble feature work?
A: As everyone is aware, none of the software nor did the original NES support rumble. We have simulated a rumble experience by reading information from a game's audio channel. This is very successful in simulating rumble. However, due to the fact that rumble was never programmed as part of these games, the rumble feature is not 100% accurate. This feature is about 85% accurate and adds a new experience to your favorite NES games.

For the price ($60), this thing sounds pretty damn cool.

I don't get this. So how is this legal?
From the thread that I linked to.

Yes, it's legal, because the patent on the NES hardware has run out. No software is distributed with the system, so no rights are being violated.

Seems a bit expensive for what you get if you ask me. I'd pay maybe $30 and I have no interest in it being wireless.

What would be interesting is if they made it somehow remap writes to the battery backup on games like Zelda to a memory card or built in device. I'd pay more for that.

I'm buying this thing that's for sure. But i'm affraid of the controller, i mean, what the fuck is that round D-pad?

im definatly gonna pick this up. it looks so sleek. i have a toploader and ive been lookin at neo-famis and this seems like the best one especially with the built in wireless

Nice to see someone give NES fans some support.

Nintendo sure as hell won't.

Of course, that goes for all console makers. ;)

I think if there is any software incorporated in it thats copyrighted, I would think that would be a problem.

Otherwise, it seems okay.

You can use standard NES controllers with it. (And the optional wireless controllers will work with a standard NES or any other NES clone with standard NES controller ports.)

It would have happened in Japan years ago with the Neo Fami, if it was going to happen at all. Nintendo stopped selling the AV Famicom over there, demand remained constant, and Gametech stepped in with their unit to meet the demand. No legal action has been taken against the unit in Japan or the US, to my knowledge.

Again, no rights are being violated here.
