New Nintendo 3DS & New Nintendo 3DS XL Launch Thread

I just unboxed my brand new New 3DS, put on screen protectors... and then discovered that the circle pad makes snapping noises when you slide it in certain ways - like there's something stuck underneath. :(

Is this normal? Will it go away after use, or do I have to call Nintendo? :/
Ive noticed this on mine too. Other thing Ive noticed is that the plastic hinge i the middle is gettkng scratched, like if there was some kind of metal or pointy thing scratching it. It has perfect straight lines that go from one side to the other. Ive slided a piece of thin paper, blew on it and still it does the same thing. Its making me mad that I take such good care of this system for this to happen.

So is this the new 3DS XL club?? :p. Bought mine a week ago after scouring the country for a Majora's Mask 3DS and found one. Great investment. The nub definitely is finer improvement although a second circular pad would be preferred in the next gen portable Nintendo handheld. Started playing Monster Hunter 4 with it and feels awesome. People on the fence, trade your old XL for the new one. Won't be disappointed.

Normal. It wears off after a while. It freaked me out too though!

Yeah, that's steep. I originally had my eye on some really nice $35-40 handmade leather 3DS XL cases on Etsy (actually preferred their look to the $94 one -- less bulky), but they sold out pretty quick once the New 3DS hit.

If you're still looking, what you might could do is just scour the site for leather cases and find a seller who makes them for similar-sized electronics. Lots of these folks do their products made-to-order, so you could likely give someone the dimensions of your XL and have one made for a whole lot less than $94.

If I have a physical copy of a game and decide to buy it digitally. Can I use the same save data for both versions or will I have to start over when starting up the digital copy?

Really wanted to import the small white JP n3ds but after looking through the home brew thread decided I don't want to deal with all that mess.

Just grabbed a black US XL. I'll be a little irate if they announce the small one coming across the pond but screw it. Just got my tax return.

I've only powered it up(in the best buy parking lot) to verify I don't have any dead/stuck pixels. But right away I'm much happier with the build quality on this one. The old XL seems kinda flimsy.

Got a 32g microSD card and Xenoblade. About to start futzing with the transfer. Wish me luck.

Edit: I don't think it ever asked me if I was using SD or microSD as my source. Oh well.

This is a PITA. But I think I'm almost done. Doing PC transfer. Just waiting till I can copy the data over.

Edit again: All done and playing Mario Golf. It's not that you have to be a vascular surgeon, but way more complicated than it needs to be. Kinda jarring for a Nintendo product. I understand why it's like this, but damn. C'mon Nintendo.

Edit x3: already bought Etrrian mystery dungeon and Out Run. It's been a while since I've looked at the eShop.

Haven't even tried Xenoblade yet. Someone punch me in the face.

I really wish my Ambassador 3DS system top screen wasn't crooked to fuck. :/

Usually I don't mind these these things but it's really noticeable and distracting. There is very little to no black borders on the right side of the screen.

I don't if Nintendo will even repair it for me as the site doesn't give you the option to book a repair for New 3DS systems.

Took a chance on a ScanDisk Ultra Plus card (64GB) that I got from CostCo and it works great! It's not on nintendo's official list but I just tried a bunch of games and everything carried over. Formatting it to FAT32 was a breeze, then I just moved all the stuff from my 32GB card onto my desktop and then put the files on the 64GB card. Surprisingly easy to do.

got my new black 3dsXL today and transferred. such an annoyance, but it's done.

Feels much more pro. Only complaint I have so far is no wifi switch - that was easy to flip off when I wanted to save battery, without even opening the system.

3d effect is much much better now, though you do need to hold the 14 inches away otherwise it can't see your eyes.

Now to sell my mint blue/black 3DSXL

Yeah the transfer was a pain in the ass.

Playing Out Run, the 3d is actually worth using. I'm pretty happy.

Don't want to turn this into a Xenoblade thread, but holy shit! 3d on it is kinda worthless, the fonts don't look that great and I'm sure there's better looking games(performance/tech wise) But damn. I'm a XC virgin and having this on the go is amazing. I'm a family man and have to compete for the TV sometimes. Being able to bust this out whenever makes me a very happy camper.

never played a Xeno game but I love old school RPGs. I take it I should buy it?

Yes, do buy it! It's my first time playing through it, but the game is very, very richly realised with lovable characters, an amazing story (so far; it only gets better the further you progress), atmospheric music, and captivating environments. The gameplay is top-notch once you understand the battle system, and I'm sure you will thoroughly enjoy how Xenoblade just oozes with JRPG charm.

Get it ;)

Not sure if this has been discussed already, but is there a chance now with the new hardware that we may finally see GBA VC games on 3DS?

I am giddy at the idea of a handheld with my 3 favourite games of all time on an SD (SMB3, SOR2 this summer and then Aria of Sorrow).

to me old school is FF6/Chrono Trigger. I heard Xenogears was originally going to be FF7?
It never occurred to me gear/blade shared the same DNA. Ha!

I never made it to the second disc of Xenogears but enjoyed what I played. Enjoying this one more so far.

I know this horse is probably dead, but... AC adapter sold separately is some bullshit.

Couldn't agree more. Bought my new XL over the weekend and couldn't wait for an Amazon order. Really wanted to play the damn thing. So paid an extra couple bucks to get it from Walmart. Best buy has the nerve to charge $15 for that thing.

Luckily, I've got one from my 2DS. I just gotta hope neither of the batteries die during the transfer.

What would be more bullshit is forcing me to pay more for the system when I already have an adapter. You realize that the adapter was never free with previous systems?

Finally upgraded my 3DSXL to a N3DS XL. Man adding a better SD Micro card as well as transfering my data was a pain in the ass. I actually worked as an IT guy for a year and have no problem opening up and fixing PCs, laptops, printers, etc. so I found it to be a small annoyance - 10 year old little Timmy however, could easily fuck that up. C'mon Nintendo.

Anyway, I also bought Xenoblade and Majora's Mask. Majora's Mask really shows off the new 3D well and I like it, but still think I'll be largely playing with the 3D effects off.

Just introduced my white JP N3DS to the rest of the gang. The vita even showed some love....

Must say, this little guy feels light. It's not my main 3ds, but If they bring the non XL to the US I'd get one and hand over the N3DSXL to my son.

Mine arrived today, the New 3D is stable as fuck! So good you almost forget it's a thing, on the old 3DS you would constantly be reminded when it would blur as you go out of the 3D line of sight. The hinges are also a lot stronger which is nice. 2D mode still has those weird rounded pixels I think, it never looks as sharp as the 3D pixels which is a shame.

Now I wait for my copy of Xenoblade to arrive and something that makes use of the New hardware...

I heard it was a hassle, mine arrived today when it asked if I wanted to transfer my data from my old 3DS... I just thought to myself, can I be bothered? Nope.

I got the Crystal Grip for n3DSXL on ebay. Nice grip but my beef is the kickstand does not stay closed too well. It bugs me. Otherwise good.

as with all 3DS' you will have a save on each version, the physical is stored in the cart while the digital in the SD card..

there are some games like Fire Emblem If and may be Persona Q (not sure about that last one) that allows you to select where to save, cart or SD card, but those are very rare

Thank you, that sucks though.

Okay, so were can I get this cover plate n.012 made of fell?

Amazon US won't send it to Scandinavia, and the Japanese retailers will add taxes on top.

It depends on the game. Almost all physical games use the cart to save, but a select few use the SD card. For example, Fantasy Life strictly uses the SD card.

Note that if you have the physical copy of a game, you can transfer the save to the digital version anytime you wish using Nintendo's save transfer tool available on the eshop.

What are you talking about, Willis? It came with my 2DS. Or are you implying that a price-hike would be justified by its inclusion? Even though practically NO consumer electronics are sold without a means to power them?

It is included in the package with your 2DS, but by no means free. The price you paid includes the cost of the adapter.

Okay, so I just ordered Fire Emblem: Awakening, found Kid Icarus: Uprising in a toy store and bought myself Shovel Knight for 3DS. A great day? A great day.

Hey. Just wondering if anyone else can help or have an suggestions as to what to do. So I have a new3DS and I've been holding off playing it for nearly a week(waiting for Gateway and stuff), but I thought I might as well continue playing Majoras Mask on the new system. The problem is, the screen is very blurry.

Majoras Mask on Vanilla3DS(not XL) looks crisp and clear. It runs great, but when I put the game in the new3DS, the game looks very blurry with a ghosting type of effect. It's especially noticeable on Links legs as he's running. I've found that turning Super Stable 3D helps, and yes it does help, but it hasn't fixed the problem entirely.

Is there another setting I need to check to make it not like GTA3 on PS2?
Edit: This is my first time owning a 3DS XL. I've been rocking the original 3DS since launch with no upgrade. Is this blurry/ghosting effect normal?

Uh, no.

You honestly think that if the adapter was included the N3DS would have the weird sticker price of $209.99?

The "savings" is in no way passed on to the consumer. The only difference is Nintendo makes a few extra bucks per unit sold.

Has anyone's circle pad gone funny?

I am trying to play Smash 3DS and I can't fucking dash properly.....I always have to hit the direction twice in order for it to dash and overall movement is pretty crap.

I'll probs get it sent to Nintendo to get it fixed along with my screen.

Just got some screen protectors for my regular size N3DS.

I can't even tell that they're there. Awesome. Now I can throw the thing into my pocket to take out with me and not worry about the screens.

But isn't the 3DS a clamshell design? Why would you have to worry about the screens? Am I missing something?

The original 3DS scratched its own top screen when shut due to the bezel of the lower screen. It was a well known issue, and fucked up my launch console. It also happened to BOTH my OG XL consoles. And I took damn good care of them.

Examples:

New+Image.BMP

See the dots going up in line with the lower bezel on that XL? Yep. That's caused by the clamshell design pushing the bezel into the top screen. What makes the issue worse is that the XL has without a doubt the thinnest, shittiest plastic lens over the LCD that I've ever seen. Was kinda shocked at it when I replaced my old one due to the scratches.

Not taking any chances with my New XL and N3DS consoles, even despite knowing that Nintendo have made the rubber bumpers on the top half taller now to attempt to prevent the issue.

It was never an issue with the DS because the top and bottom screens were the same size and shape.

I assume you tried wiping those marks off. I've seen those marks on every system and it's simply skin oil from using the touch screen with hands, then the bezel touches the top screen. On my OG, I would even get a circle on my top screen from the circle pad. I've never seen any of these marks become permanent, and that is after years of use, and even two child-owned systems do not have permanent damage. They all wipe clean with a cloth.

We have two launch blue and black systems and I still don't see any marks. We don't even use cases on the OG systems, as they are nicely self-contained and the case plastic is durable. The XL systems need babied, though. Although the new XL has the OG style case plastic, so I am much more confident.

I have seriously never seen it be scratches either. It was marks you could wipe off.

But it is unfortunate if you got permanent scratches.

There is blurring with any LCD, it may be that the bigger screen makes it much more noticeable.

Or it could be that you got a crappy screen on your machine. I've been through a few consoles because of dead pixel problems and there was a big variety in the screens. One of them had much worse blurring even in 2D mode, playing Theatrhythm you could see the colours bleeding on the red markers.

I am super OCD when it comes to keeping my consoles and handheld clean and scratch free, and I can confirm that at least the OG 3DS had the self-scratching issue as Rich described.

Since then, I either keep a fiber cloth between the screens or use screen protectors. Not taking any chances anymore either, I hate scratchy screens!

May have been my imagination, but I thought I noticed some sort of ghosting/motion blur effect when playing MK7. I don't recall seeing it before although it has been a while since I played on my OG 3DS.

Also, I don't know where to start Xenoblade or Bravely Default. Might hold off Xenoblade for a bit, it's too huge of a time investment before Witcher 3.
