New PictoChat Features

http://www.got-next.com/news/0804/082304-01.html

so yeah, check out the patent for PictoChat. features that the system is said to have now also include....

Wireless Voice Mail Services
Wireless Electronic Transmission of Voice Signals
Online Videogame News and Hints
Data Transfer
Demo Downloads
Message Boards

i really hope Nintendo makes sure all those features make it into the program, and more importantly, make sure that it's built into the system. it not, what a wasted opportunity.

tons of fuckin potential here.

There's alot of potential in most of Nin's products, but they never really use them to their full capacity. I just hope all these features will be USED and implemented.

I have a feeling that patent is one of Nintendo's ways of protecting itself.

I mean, PictoChat coming with those features would be surprising because 1.) Nintendo has repeatedly said that it hates non-videogame features, and 2.) a Nintendo product that actually exceeds expectations is a rarity nowadays.

I remember thinking how cool it would be if DS had cellphone or messaging capability either built in or as an extra peripheral or whatever. With the mic and wifi it'd make a lot of sense. And demo downloads? Hoo boy! I'll buy two DS's if this is true. So my wallet hopes that it isn't.

That would be nice. Of course, if it had a simple calendar feature and a contacts list, I could get rid of my palm pilot and just carry a DS.

I'll *scream* if I hear one person complain "where did that feature go??! Nintendo is cutting features!!" when the final setup is revealed and doesn't have some of these features. This is just a patent..it may not necessarily be reflected fully, or at all, in the final product.

Trademarks are intentionally overreaching. I mean just look up Sony's PS2 trademark. It covers things like socks, casinos, and chalk. It's not based on features the system actually includes (and a lot of times ends up glossing over eventual uses), so it's hard to glean too much from a trademark description.

After the whole 64DD "news" thing, I wish sites would slow down a little trying to turn everything in the trademark database into news.

64DD was actually online though.. people were applying that patent to Gamecube though, which is far more confusing. But I know what you're saying -- people must literally scour the uspto.gov site on a regular basis looking for news. Gaming news of all things.

I still cant get the patents up, that search engine is a bit scatty.. anyone got direct links?

edit: never mind--

They are pretty far ranging descriptions. I think the site may have construed too much from this now as well. But I still hope some of that functionality is in there.

This bears repeating.
