poor flea. dude deserves a better guitarist; this new guy isn't even trying.

I just don't think Klinghoffer suits the RHCP style - you listen to the stuff he's done with Frusciante on his solo albums and the Ataxia records and Josh's newer stuff under the Dot Hacker name, and he's got a minimal, ethereal style of playing that seems to be totally at odds with the radio-friendly, Kiedis-lyrics-driven Chili Peppers. He's a great guitarist though, I just would prefer to see what he can do on a more guitar-driven Chili Peppers song.

I think it's not that bad, but everyone says i have bad taste in music so :p

It wouldn't be as bad with some inspired guitar work.

They'll never be the booty shaking, earth quaking, fuck your momma in teh ass funk band again, but I guess that's inevitable.

The last RHCP album I liked was Blood Sugar Sex Magic. That album can still go cover to cover without skipping a song. While they've had good singles since then, I dont think any of their albums have that quality to them... to me at least.

So what's Frusciante doing? I know he would do the occasional show/guest work with TMV.

Recording stuff with random artists; Swahili Blonde, Truth Hurts and French singer Catherine Ringer (you can hear her track featuring John here). Other than that, there was mention that he's working on his 11th solo album back in May, but since then everything's been quiet in typical Frusciante fashion.

Song is catchy in the middle but it starts out rough and has really shitty guitar work, and I say that as a really casual music listener. I sort of like it. Definitely don't hate it.

Am I the only one who thought the peppers hit their peak with One Hot Minute?

Dave Navarro was the best guitarist for this band because of his rock sound. Flea is always going to make them sound funky, so with Flea and Dave, they produce their most energetic music by far e.g. Shallow Be Thy Game and Warped.

That sound is their best sound IMO.

Entire album's up now. It's available to stream from various radio websites. Every song I've heard so far has been better than Rain Dance Maggie

I think the strength of most songs so far has been their catchy bass lines, Flea and Chad are on their game as usual. Josh's guitars seem to just kind of fade in and out at various times...when he gets his rock on it's good and sometimes Frusciante-esque, but it feels like he's too shy or something. His backup vocals fit well, he sounds a lot like John. Kiedis is Kiedis, you love him or hate him by now.

Like all albums repeat listens will see if it really fits, but on my first listen I like it. I'm most excited about whenever the upcoming tour comes to a town near me.

Some catchy tunes though nothing really sticks out. I'll have to listen again -- then again I wasn't expecting their best album!

you speak so well
I like it a lot but I'm also an enormous RHCP fan and had absolutely no doubt that I'd enjoy the album. I do miss Frusciante but everyone else is doing their thing well enough.

Factory of Faith moves me! <3

All together though, I didn't enjoy it. I may give it another try next week though..

Listening now, I'm not huge on it so far. It's certainly listenable, but it's a little boring and the vocal melodies are a real low point. It may grow on me, but I don't see it happening.

listening to "Factory of Faith". Holy shit. Its like a dance tune. Great fucking bass.

Im two songs into the album and its like a happier, more psychedelic By The Way to me. Very melodic. So far so good.

(Fav album is BSSM and Ive been a fan since the mid 90s. I just love their evolved sound)

I keep waiting every album to hear this sound again. After listening through half of this, I think I'm going to wait a really long time....

If you like bands that are dealing with a lot of strife and lacking in chemistry this is some of the best music ever. Kiedis was completely relapsed and Navarro was a big addict at the time too. There whole way of creating songs was changed. Navarro didn't like to create songs by jamming, he didn't get it, plus he wasn't really a fan of funk music. The production was notoriously long and Flea had to pick up some of Kiedis's slack. That's why Pea is on the album. He also wrote most of Transcending and the intro to Deep Kick. It's a very sad album for a lot of reasons. I still like it a lot, but it's easily below any albums they did with Frusciante.

As for I'm With You, I like it a lot, and surprisingly it reminds of One Hot Minute here and there. I think it's because Flea's influence is greater but I'm sure Josh's interests are a bit different from John and he's going in slightly different directions. Josh's guitar is pretty damn good, too. I think Rain Dance Maggie was very consciously chosen as a first single because it sounds like it could've been off Stadium Arcadium. There's little indicating John left. But I tend to find the first single of their albums amongst my least favorites, they feel very familiar.

this album is practically as much of a departure from their sound as Incubus' recent release. Pianos, trumpet solos, ethereal and more atmospheric guitar effects. Its really good just...wow..

I dont find any of that new for them. I don't find this album as big of a departure as By The Way but it's definitely a new direction.

they are past their prime now

stadium arcadium was the peak, downhill from now on

How can you say past their prime, and say Stadium was their peak, and then say its downhill from now. Stadium was their latest album? That is ridiculous.

Anyway, as some of you may know I am a fucking fanatical RHCP fan. Californication is my all time favourite album, but BSSM is their best. Anyone who says anything other than Blood Sugar as the best album is fucking retarded, its that simple.

Anyway, Maggie is not bad, its not good, but I will wait until I hear the whole album before I comment on Josh as a guitarist. John Frusciante was the best and also worst thing for the band, as good as he is, it was his influence that changed the direction of the band towards their later musical style. I love By the way though, and thought Stadium was great, if not a little too clean, but yeh for sure it was John who pushed them in that direction (compared to early rhcp like uplift mofo, freaky styley, and even his first couple like MM and BSSM).

Whats with the Stadium Arcadium hate? Its an awesome chill out album.

Slow Cheetah
Strip My Mind
Hey
Wet Sand
Hard To Concentrate
Stadium Arcadium
Desecration Smile
She Looks To Me

How can an album with these songs in it be crap?

Chamber

love on your sleeve
Stadium isn't crap. Just bloated like most double albums.

Gave the new stuff a listen. Seemed a little forgettable but I'm a huge Frusciante fanboy so my opinion probably doesn't mean shit on this one.

Because "chill out" is not what RHCP does (did) best. In fact, the opposite of chill is the best chilipeppers.

John 2.0 really wrecked their old rockin groove into some awful melancholy lounge music which is weird because his solo shit can be rockin badass shit

Its sad to see them onstage anymore because they look like their groovin and rockin like they used to but the music coming out of them is just weird chill mush.

answer: It cannot

Plus "Hump De Bump" has the most awesome pentatonic bass run EVER. Confirmed by science.

A coincidence that this topic is bumped. I was just listening to Freakey Styley. Their best album for sure, but sadly the least heard album too.

Not much of a fan of this new single. I prefer the rough funk that was present in Freakey Styley and Blood Sugar Sex Magik. The article says it should remind me of those, but it really doesn't. They need to get George Clinton back to produce an album. It's amazing they got him to produce Freakey Styley with Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley, the most legendary horn duo (James Brown, The J.B.'s), playing horns.

some things get better with age. the chili peppers did not. i wouldn't be surprised to hear most of these songs played in a grocery store.

I love the first two tracks, the rest kinda goes by in a more chilled-out version of their usual stuff. Which probably doesn't say a lot about the strength of the original songs, but at least it's not atrocious. Pleasant enough.

Stadium Arcadium is a fucking amazing album. Dani California, Snow, Stadium Arcadium, Slow Cheetah, Strip My Mind, Torture Me, Wet Sand, Tell Me Baby, etc...

They indeed sound so bored. It's like an even further watered-down version of their already poppy By the way / Stadium Arcadium songs.

That guitar sound is ugly, by the way.

I've loved RHCP for a long time. For me their turning point was Stadium Arcadium. By the Way may have been their most 'quiet' album, yet it is still inspired and interesting. Stadium Arcadium sounds very boring to me and very uninspired. Songs like" Slow Cheetah" and "Desecration Smile" tried to be emotional wihle staying catchy but resulted into crap. "Make You Feel Better" was basically the bridge riff from Sublime's "Daterape"....."Especially in Michigan" is good though.

Flea, I think, is actually one of the problems w/ Stadium Arcadium. The bass-work is just not there. Where the fuck did the funk go? Even "Hump de Bump" had boring-ass bass. Tell me Baby is about as driven as he got.

Gotta say though, this band has some of the best b-sides out there, and usually know how to make a great, unified album, while still leaving extra songs to listen to later.

I am loving the new album!
On the 1st listen I wasn't feeling it at all and thought it was pretty forgettable, unlike By The Way and Stadium Arcadium which I instantly thought had memorable tracks the 1st time I heard them. But I gave it a second play through and this time I really listened to the musicianship and lyrics and I gotta say overall this is a fantastic album.
The single is still terrible and the worst song off the album, such a bad indicator of the what the rest are like. The guitar work is definitely not as good Frusciante imo but it works decently enough with the rest of the band. Flea is awesome as always and personally I love Kiedis's voice.

Welcome back RHCP it's great to have new material :D Hopefully they'll be touring real soon.

Top tracks for me would be:
Police Station
Did I Let You Know
Annie Wants a Baby
Factory of Faith (cause of that bassline mostly)

is there going to be an official thread for the official release?
