New Ridge Racer DS gameplay vids and dev interview

This looks much, much, much better in motion.
Very clean and very smooth. Better than any N64 racer I can think of.

That looked terrible to the point of unplayable. Ugh.

There is no way we watched the same video.
Gameplay Footage 3 looks better than any N64 racer I played and a lot of the racers on the N64 were VERY playable.

Its the cool thing to say here. No worries.

I liked it. I honestly don't think you could play that on a handheld and feel cheated, even with the graphically superior RR PSP out.

I`ve never played N64 RR so I wouldnt know, only ps1 and 2. But I expected better than this. Looks like pixelated mess. The third video looks a little better than the first 2 i watched, but still pretty bad,imo

Better than I expected, but it needs more frames. Maybe sacrificing the light trails would help.

Maybe it was just me, but it looked really smooth. And pretty damn fast aswell.

pixilated mess? um. maybe you should keep the videos at 100% scale instead of blowing them up to fullscreen.

Doesn't look that bad actually. Of course the PSP looks 10x nicer but this probably wont be that bad for people who don't own a PSP.

Holy sh!t! That's one fast moving game! 60 frames per second baby! :)

so you`re able to see 60fps in a 25-30fps .asx mpeg? Good job.
If this game is 60fps I`ll be very surprised, my bet is an unstable 30fps.

Its confirmd as 60fps when it was revealed. So is Asphalt Urban GT. wOuld be nice to see gorund up DS racers.

Then your guess is way off. Please bookmark for future self-owning.

Probably 30 fps. My only complaint is that like RR64 it doesn't have the look or feel of a RR game.

Edit: it was confirmed 60 fps..then even nicer :)

The game is fast, but it's not moving at a steady frame rate. It's dropping frames all over the place.

Still, doesn't look too bad, and at least it's fast.

But it doesn't have the RR look to it, although they probably want it to have the same feel as the N64 game, which didn't look that much like the other RR games to me.

It was confirmed to be 60fps. I wasn't guessing or talking out my ass like you appear to be.

That animated steering wheel looks really stupid. Cant they make some better use for the second screen? Like rear/side view mirrors, for example?

Looks no better or worse than before really. i'm not a huge RR fan so i can't recall particular car models, but these look particularly ugly to me for some reason. Also, the music, what i could hear of it, sounds bad. It reminds me of Wipeout 64, which was actually a much better and faitful game to the series (minus the music) compared to RR 64. If this didn't have the RR name, expectations wouldn't be so high. As it stands now, i don't see what's particularly great about the game in motion other than motion trails for the lights.

Edit: Fuck, would it have killed them to add a rearview mirror option in stead of the steering wheel? Maybe i'll like it when i play it, but the while the wheel seems like a possibly useful althernative, i'd much rather have a rearview mirror.

i'm leaning towards Asphalt a bit more, although i'll probably break down and buy them both.

Are you joking? It's a touch screen controlled steering wheel.

"At the very least, the game looked great running at 30 frames per second"

I was?

I don't like NST at all. Shit, after viewing the Metroid Hunters trailer just think if these guys were the people that did the original Metroid Prime game? The Metroid franchise would be DEAD now.

Here's the Gamespot preview

Random quotes:

The wheel on the touch screen isn't as responsive as we would've liked, resulting in sketchy handling, which is death in a racing game. The control fairs considerably better if you pick one of the alternate stylus-free control layouts, effectively reducing the touch screen to map-screen status.

the game does a fair job of approximating the visuals seen in Ridge Racer 64, minus a few special effects.

But the most impressive element of the visuals is the game's frame rate, which is respectably high.

Respectably high doesn't sound like 60 fps to me, probably 30 with a few drops.

Geeeez, the complaints don't stop, do they?
When you don't like the DS you really reach to make everything seem horrible.

"no. Im being honest"

No. You're not.

The unfinished version had some framerate/handling issues? I dont believe it!

Assuming there is no delay, it's coming out in a month. That means it should be an almost complete build, so outside of some minor tweaking what you see it what you''l get.

I heard that the Demo build was compiled SECONDS before presentation.

"I honestly don't think you could play that on a handheld and feel cheated,"

I felt cheated just looking at the video.

with this and the PSP game, this is like a repeat of when I owned RRT4 and still bought RR64 for some reason. needless to say I won't be doing that again.

edit: until this drops to $10!!!

If Spider-Man 2 can be developed in 5 months, I bet these people can hammer out some minor flaws in a month.
If 1080 Avalanche is any indication, possibly not. It ran at 60fps most of the time with frequent drops based on scene complexity. Also, they've got less than a month to get the game out to stores, which includes replication, packaging, and shipping. If GS played the latest build, the game is indeed finished and will ship with the flaws.

i think Spiderman would be an easier game since they were developing from scratch compared to tranlating an old version of a game to a new machine, with expectations of the new version matching the old one.

Has anyone seen the hi-res videos? I'm not a gamespot complete member so I can't see them. The streaming ones are horrible video quality, so I can't accurately gauge the graphics.

Couldnt they make the videos any smaller? Maybe to hide the ugly textures. :D

Jesus do you ever do anything BUT complain and/or troll? I can't believe DJ has a countdown and you don't. You're 100x worse than he is. Give it a rest already.
