The water was severely downgraded. It doesn't appear to have any form of refraction in the
Del Lago
screenshot, and doesn't have the "pixel shader like" reflection on the castle shots.
You're right about that! I had forgotten about the water found in the castle. Not a big deal, I suppose, as it doesn't show up very often...but you're right.

Even I didn't expect PS2 to be able to replicate RE4 this well. I considered RE4 to be the best looking game this gen (be it for PC or console). I thought there was no way in hell Capcom could pull it off on PS2.
Yes.

I think, instead of critiquing and posting comparison shots, we should be complimenting Capcom for the amazing work they've done porting this. The fact that they actually look comparable is a feat all in itself.

None of these shots look impressive to me now, GC or PS2. I'm still impressed when I play the game, so I'll judge the PS2 one when I can actually play it. I can see from these screenshots, and that old RE4 PS2 screenshot that improvement has been made in the PS2 version which is good.

if the ps2 version supports true widescreen, then it's graphically superior. assuming the framerate holds up, anyway. ps2 gets the definitive version of the definitive gamecube game. :/

Where do you see the water in PS2 castle shots?

i find it quite funny that we ps2 owners also got the superior version of Viewtiful Joe :D

I agree, Capcom are amazing!! They shold be complimented, not bickered over.

In a way I shouldn't be too surprised at how much effort they are making this a faithful port after the E3 2005 trailer, it could only get better from there. See for yourself what I saw months ago, I apologize for compression and artifacting in some of these shots, I just work with what I got:

All PS2 shots are from the E3 2005 trailer and the GC are from various trailers and screenshots:

it's pretty scary that some people wanted me to lay down €150 for that tiny difference. glad i didnt!

btw the ps2 version looks sharper on those pics. this should be fun haha.

Well, it must be noted it is a result of the video being used, the PS2 E3 2005 was higher quality than most of GC trailers I found at gametrailers.com. Anyway it was to paint how faithfull they are staying to the overall picture.

Fuck's sake.

The game will rule anyway. I have it on GC and I'll get it on PS2 as well. I love the bow gun as per Krauser in Mercs mode.

The electric gun looks like it'll get stale quickly, but give me that bow gun love. I hope the frame rate stays rock too.

LakeEarth said:
No, the GC captures are just blurrier (just look at them all), but thanks for playing.
Exactly. Why on earth would they actually modify that texture? It's clearly the EXACT same texture. There is no reason for them to have upped the resolution.

What's up with the water boss' textures, they look disgusting. Otherwise, not to shabby a port. As long as the frame rate is stable, I can deal with the slight reduction in visual quality.

The 13-year old GC userbase wouldn't have appreciated the higher res version of that texture, so they saved it for the PS2 version . . . *runs*

Nice job of posting blurry ass GC shots, looks like someone hotboxing(maybe Leon and a couple villagers are smoking a blunt) in the room of some of the shots posted.

I already noted it is due to video compression and I work with what I got. People tend to never look past things like that...why? You should try to match pics scene to scene from moving trailers of various pics. Even in light of the shots, you can see the overall textures and poly counts being used. Being defensive in such matters is highly unneeded. Go to gametrailers.com if you wish and see them for yourself.

You honestly think RE4 would even remotely look like that in terms of video output in actual play or something? Hell, I already have the GC version, of course not. These are freaking trailer grabs!!

All of the really impressive stuff in the old version, particularly the monsters, seem to be hugely downgraded in the PS2 version. I look forward to seeing how that one lava room in the castle faired in the translation, and the lab on the island towards the end.

Like he said, you should have read his post. I get this same bullshit all the time. It's often tough to find good quality shots of what you are trying to compare. This is NOT about image quality. Those GC shots are of poor quality, but you can still make out the details and compare them (which was the point).

ejdonk said:
We already had a bullshit comparsion thread, dont start that again.

Those were shots of not comparing exact scenes, and these shots are exact scene grabs. Geez, people aren't satisfied not matter what. Even when I stated this are from videos and are thusly do to compression and artifacts!! This isn't even about image quality. Hell go to IGN or Gamespot and use their directs pics, it's not flattering to the GC RE4 at times, simiply because the game looks so much better in motion, and the game's graphics tend to take poor shots for some reason.

If people all honestly played RE4 you would know how it looks already. I mean I'm surprised I even need to tell people, 3 times, no less!!, about overall picture and how faithfull they are trying.

Unlike RE4 (which is 480p + anamorphic widescreen), Viewtiful Joe was field rendered on PS2. For that reason alone, I'd say the GC version is superior.

Also, the image quality was notably weaker judging by the VJ PS2 screenshots. I didn't see the game in motion (on the PS2), though, so I can't say if it was notable during play.

You know Homer, I know what you just did and why you did it in the way you did (compression) but you made the GCN version look like ass :lol

Unintentionally but still :lol

I already pointed out that it was field rendered...

It was. I finished both versions and the GC version did look and play better. The PS2 one had a bit of slowdown when things got hectic but it was nothing major or too serious

I think it was said to have a bit more pixelated image for VJ PS2.

I hope this teaches Capcom a lesson about developing for Nintendo consoles: i.e. DON'T DO IT. They coulda saved everyone trouble if they'd just released this as a PS2 exclusive.

aye. i must say. you used to be funny.. but now all your posts in the gaming forum seem to be trolls.

I tried my best, I wanted to get the exact frames because people keep complaining about how it's not the exacts scenes and stuff, but man sometimes I hate being gamer because of pettyness like this.

I might as well post some of sceen grabs I have since well it is a PS2 RE4 thread and how well it's turning out with the GC version!!!

But stand back now!!!

There are obvious differences from video compressions!!
Look past it to see what the scene is showing!!

I agree that nin fanboys come out a little hard in this htread but at the same time the ps2 fans aren't better with their thrash talking of superior and complete versions :lol

I wish people would lighten up, sheesh!!

As far as the laser goes, it could technically fit into the RE4 gameworld... (plot spoilers below)

Since the gun is referred to as a Plaga Removal Laser, maybe it's set up to be like a handheld version of the device that removed the parasites from Leon and Ashley later in the game. They both appear to share the same blue lighting effect.

I wish people would lighten up, sheesh!!

Never gonna happen. The people with the Nintendo loyalties are always going to wish for the PS2 version to be a disaster, and the people with the fanatic loyalty to Sony will always brag about the "definitive version" at every opportunity just to provoke a reaction from the Nintendo camp.

Sure, there will be people who just play the damn game on their system of choice and enjoy it as the awesome game it is without feeling the odd desire to try and justify their particular version to other people, but since those people aren't going to be participating in these types of discussions anyway, it's not worth it to worry about the people who are.

Just you wait till the actual game gets released. All hell will break lose with both sides yapping about which version is *definetly* better :lol

At the end of the day aren't both versions pretty close to comparible. They look about the same to me. So who cares.

It's the people who wait a full year to play the best game this generation on the Ps2 who already have a GC *coughEGM92cough*. That's just stupid in most people's eyes to wait a year for an extra gun some extra costumes and some extra ada missions
And for widescreen. And for the ability to use a dual shock instead of the GC controller. Yeah, totally stupid.
