A lot of alien horror comes from the life-cycle of insects.

I can get behind the emerald wasp, a pretty little thing that zombifies a cockroach by a clinical delivery of venom to the brain, chews off half it's antenna, leads it to a nest and then lays an egg that hatches and chews into the roach.

What do wasps do for the environment? I know what Bees do, but wasps... Do that have a purpose other than creating fear?

I don't know about most wasps, but while yellow jackets don't pollinate, they still play an important role in agriculture as they eat several kinds of pests.
