News Corp. to challenge EA through acquisition

News Corporation is seeking an acquisition in the video games market but is not sure whether it can find a suitable target, Peter Chernin, chief operating officer, said yesterday.

Speaking at a conference in Phoenix, Arizona, Mr Chernin said News Corp, the media and entertainment group led by Rupert Murdoch, together with other media companies, was "kicking the tires of pretty much all video games companies". This included Activision, the Santa Monica-based video games publisher that is seeking a buyer, Mr Chernin said.

"We see [video games] as a big business and would like to get into it," Mr Chernin said. "We are struggling with the gap between companies like Electronic Arts, which come with a high price tag, and the next tier of companies. These may be too focused on one or two product lines."

Electronic Arts is the world's largest video game publisher and has also recently made acquisitions, including a 20 per cent of Ubisoft, a French video game company, last month.

Mr Chernin did not indicate how much News Corp might be willing to spend to enter the multi-billion video games market but said the company's large cash position gave it considerable flexibility.

WTF...Activision is seeking a buyer???

As much as I don't want News Corp involved in gaming, I'd love for someone to out-EA EA.

Well after the release of Virtua Quest, News Corp. may have to worry about Sega, not EA.

Nothing new. Mirrorsoft was big (at least in the UK) in the 80's. That was run by the Mirror group, headed by Robert Maxwell. Compared to him, Rupert Murdoch is a cub scout.

An O'Reilly Factor video game would be hot.

Or a Fox News fighting game, where you can pit Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Alan Colmes, Shepherd Smith, Greta Van Susteren, et al against the likes of Al Franken, George Clooney, Ludacris, and Paris Hilton. "That's hot."

The possiblities are so scary, but at least someone is thinking of challenging EA's dominance in the market. No one else has really been able to compete, and with EA's recent propensity to throw money around to buy market share, perhaps a little competion will be a good thing.

If Murdoch gets EA, we get Right Wing games with fucking EA Trax with DJ StryCUNT. Now THAT would be scary.

Oh, happy day. This line in particular made me wretch:

"These may be too focused on one or two product lines."

Fucking sleazy businessmen.

Any of these evil shitbags end up dominating my hobby, and I'm fucking done with it. On the bright side, I'd get to play plenty of online go and get a lot more reading done, while you asshats who rationalize everything with, "OH NO COMPANY IS BETTER OR WORSE THAN ANY OTHER" would get what you damn well deserve. Hell, maybe I could finally beat Nethack. :P

To a lesser extent first it was Sony

Both Sony and MS had been making games for awhile before they entered the hardware side of the biz... good games? well....

Just to be clear, I don't have a problem with new companies getting into the videogame act. What I do have a problem with are evil bastard companies that are fucking up the world outside of games and toys. Sony, Nintendo, and EA don't really qualify in this regard, because they aren't interfering with our political system, screwing up our economy, and so on. If Panasonic decided to buy developers and/or make a system, I wouldn't be bothered at all. Haliburton? I'd be chewing on the ceiling.

So, you're grouping Microsoft in with Haliburton and News Corp.? Don't you think that's a bit unfair?
