Next Big MMORPG on its way?

Dungeons & Dragons Online and Vanguard are the next to big ones.

Of the two, D&D Online honestly has the better chance due to the real-time twitched based combat and how strictly they are sticking to the D&D 3.5 rules in a MMO environment. On the other hand, there are enough people burned by Brad McQuaid's "THE VISION (tm)" from EQ that they may not even give Vanguard a chance.

It'll be Pokemon on the Revolution. :D :D

Nah, I don't follow MMORPG news closely at all. I have only played FFXI a bit to check it out, but I can't get into them. I'd like to be able to get into one, but none of them seem to excite me like they do the rest of the gaming population.

Personally? Both Vanguard and DDO promise to provide entertaining, yet vastly different experieces. Can't wait for both.

I'd like a MMORPG away from the stylised fantasy cliché. Something like Shenmue Online but by a decent developer, or maybe some other cliché, like cyberpunk? ;)

The first MMORPG to hit 360. Remember what the first FPS (Halo) did to Xbox?

It may be even worse than EQ2 but millions who never played a MMORPG before will worship it.

D&D:O looks hella cool by the way.

Phantasy Star Universe.

It probably won't be a 'proper' MMORPG, but it still looks like it's going to be digital crack.

What about ncsoft? Don't forget them. They have a very solid lineage (forgive the pun ;)) of online titles, with the recently well received Guild Wars and forthcoming games Tabula Rasa and Auto Assault. Maybe they've got something major in the waiting?

Well, they've got to release a WoW 2 at some point.

I believe Blizzard once made a statement saying that they'll never develop a sequel to WoW, they'll just keep on patching and building on WoW.

Shenmue Onl...oh no, wait.

I'd say Phantasy Star Universe may drag me back in for a fair while, provided its got FAR better combat than PSO.

I'm also still intrigued and thirsty for that 'WIKI' Celda style MMORPG, provided it isnt being raped by the Nintendo Legal Machine as we talk.

If Nintendo made a Pokemon MMORPG, the world would explode. =P

I would be angry if it didn't come to PC.

I'm having visions of level 89 Picachus going for $50 on eBay.

I doubt that. It may be years in the making, but there's gonna be a WoW 2.

I've actually heard some decent things about the Auto Assault beta. It's very different from all other MMOs.

Heck, I've seen what WoW did for MMO's. If D&D is as accesable as it's been described, (surprising, considering the pedigree), and be on a console, it could be on of those to pull it off.

I dont think anything is going to beat WOW on subscription numbers for a long time.

That being said however, I think Tabula Rasa has a chance to get some of the crowd considering its being done by Richard Garriot aka Lord British. It may look nothing like Ultima Online, but there is decent chance that its core gameplay elements are probably similar.

No it will be the next Final Fantasy Online.

They will most likely release it late in the PS3/X360/Rev lifetime.

It will be the one mmorpg to rule them all. Much like FFTSW-->>FF:AC :)
Square learned from their mistakes and will most likely create an incredible new mmorpg with an actual "story". That's something most mmorpgs are missing these days. Sure give the open ended story to the same people that come up with their D&D adventures :lol

Leave the story to the professionals, and let the players immerse themselves in that store as part of a "community". That's what mmorpgs should be about. And hopefully Square will nail it on the head with their next Final Fantasy Online.

Well, the only problem I see with D&D Online is that the powergaming kiddies who have to have a big number next to their character name to feel special will probably hate the game since it uses D&D 3.5 rules and the level cap will be level 20 with roughly the same exp curve the pen&paper game has. Also you don't get any exp from killing mobs, only by doing quests.

Interesting concept.

I have high hopes for Tabula Rasa. Richard Garriott Starr Long blew everyone away with ultima online, most mmogs today dont even attempt what they did almost 10 years ago. Maybe they can do it again. I know people wont like it but the built in voice chat in Tabula Rasa is a step in the right direction IMO.

Edit: Heres a video from E3, gives an idea of what the game will be like.

Honestly, despite people's supposed protests, if it doesn't have grinding then people won't like it. GW gives a lot more exp for quests rather than just repeatidly killing mobs, but people don't know what to do with something different.

Think you are thinking of Fantasy Earth

If Square can keep the good from FFXI and remove the bad, Fantasy Earth could definitely be worth checking out.

The first of the next generation of MMORPG's is Dark and Light scheduled for release in November. After that will come the likes of Vanguard, Dungeons and Dragons Online and Middle Earth Online as well as some others.

Of these up coming games I believe Dark and Light is the most ambitious and has the most potential. It also doesn't have the financial backing of Vanguard or Dungeons and Dragons Online meaning it may not gain the widespread mainstream appeal of those games. All the same, I'm not after the most popular MMORPG, I'm after the best and with its advanced crafting system, meaningful PvP combat, massive scope, single global server etc, Dark and Light interests me the most.

With that said, here is some general information on the game -

Oblivion is bringing the graphics; I couldn't give a shit what a MMORPG looks like.

I haven't spent the last three months playing WoW for its looks.

World of Warhammer? The non-sci-fi Warhammer? That would so fucking rule.

Skavens, Big'uns, Ratogres...

On the other hand I couldn't care less about World of Warhammer 40K ;p

That version of Warhammer Online was cancelled, but Mythic (the Dark Age of Camelot guys) have recently picked up the rights and are continueing the project. To do so they cancelled their internal project called Imperator, and shifted the team over. Apparently they have access to all of the assets from Climax's attempt, but they aren't sure how much they will use.

Putting a Final Fantasy story in a MMORPG would be a terrible terrible idea. Open ended story that leaves something to your imagination is much better than some derivative FF story crammed down your throat.

Unless they scrap the game and start over for a third time!

God, I hope they do.

I really like what I've seen of Age Of Conan, but all my hopes are with an MMO that no-one's allowed to talk about but has the best pitch in the history of the univere.

FFXI actually has a fantastic storyline. I guess it's difficult for most casuals to see it since you need a level 75 character to see two of the major arcs and a load of smaller arcs, but the story it has is huge and magnificent, and that's coming from someone who loves the offline Final Fantasies.

Too fucking slow. I mean sure it sounds great that you can have a battle with 8 people, but when it's 8 people versus a single tofu, it takes fucking forever because all 8 people have to move into position, but usually moving once isn't enough so they move twice. Before you know it you take 5 minutes to kill one fucking low level enemy.

It's just too slow, even for a MMORPG.

No, please not Shenmue anything. I would rather see something akin to System Shock 2.

Based upon what I saw at E3, Vanguard had pretty much ever aspect of EQ that I found incredibly tedious.

It'll find an audience, but I think its design keeps anyone but the extremely masochistic at arms length.

Ok, so now people WON'T play a MMO if it doesn't have an experience grind?

I can't wait for Mythic's Warhammer, if only to see all the idiots bash it for being a "Warcraft rip-off" when in reality Warhammer is a lot older. :lol

A game where you're trapped on a space station where you're the only one alive? That's an interesting choice for an MMO.
