how can anyone anticipate/hope for $399 from either of the next-gen consoles (Series S not included)

A - Probably under age kids who have to ask their parents to buy one knowing they won't go above a certain amount to spend on them.

B - People who are not working regularly.

I've always said though, if you saved $40/50 for the last year or so, you should be relatively good on getting a unit at a price up to $600 or close in range of that. Hopefully people aren't waiting until they know the price to then mobilize. And the tax! Let's not forget that motherfucker lol. In NY the sales tax will be an extra $50 for the unit. That's a nice add-on to it.

Yep. Where I live in NY State the rate is 8.38%. At that rate, the console would be $541.89 at $499.99 or $650.27 at $599.99 retail. Add warranty to that, a game, maybe an extra controller, and a year of Playstation Plus without even including whatever add on storage would cost.. yeesh.

In continuation of your response to Mr. Playstation's comment: BTW, some people, even working people, who are adults, live paycheck to paycheck. This doesn't even account for those deeply affected by the Coronavirus and may now have to take any money they had been saving towards any new console, and yeah, it's not pretty.
I had to take money I'd been saving for it and help buy my wife a new laptop for work use. Her job doesn't supply them, and she needed it. They are state funded and wouldn't reimburse. So, it's definitely not cut and dry about why people might hope for a lower priced console.
My Brother owns his own company and has two kids, house mortgage, school costs..etc.
It's just best for those who can afford things like this to remember that not everyone is in the same boat and that gaming is a luxury. As are expensive ass televisions to get an optimal experience.

Sorry, I probably read it and then forgot to answer or didn't want to. Only revenue, Microsoft doesn't disclose profit/loss figures on branch levels only company wide. In 2017 Nadella did say that the Xbox division was growing profitably (source), and since then nothing really major changed to have an influence on those numbers. Services and revenue went up since then, and I don't see a major cost except for console the release now.

Did you see/read ArmGunar's detailed price analysis based on a $399 disc version PS5 (before we knew about the DE)?

He ran the numbers and even being conservative his profit number for FY20 came in at ¥181bn versus Sony's own profit forecast range of ¥160.1bn to ¥189.1. Way out of the $499 numbers range.

Of course Sony would just love to price it at $499 if they think they can but their own numbers seem to indicate they are prepared to go low.

It's Sonys decision to invest where they want to. They don't have to talk to epic.
Sony could invest the same amount of many in any other company if they wished to do so.

Its odd that XSX has 3.6 Ghz and 1.825 Ghz, yes its a bigger GPU on silicon but its quite a different route with higher CPU and 20 % lower GPU.....

Looking at all the leaks of big Navi, it looks like a 2.2 / 2.3 Ghz boost GPU, so inline with Ps5, and the wattages for 72 CU are not crazy for PC space. All will become clearer soon.

If you're not getting the savings with a price difference you better be getting that thing bundled with Spider-man and Demon Souls and 3 months of PS+ at least at launch. Otherwise getting the physical is a no brainer. There is a reason they've made this sku, and that reason is probably as a price point, cost cutting box for the casuals on a tight budget. Better be $399 as you've said. Sony would be crazy to misread the market. People been literally telling them $499 is the max for the disc version and $399 was the sweet spot for the PS4. They know it.

I imagine that's a bog standard cooling solution and not a partnered one.

Well, those questions are beyond me. But 2 PS5 APU's connected (stacked/butterfly chiplet) could easily be priced by Sony as much as launch PS5 by 3-4 years from now. Would they go the extra mile for a 24-channel per 24 modules (1,650GB)? Probably.
