I mean MS did kind of tell everyone this a while ago. 2 x X1X = 12TF. The idea that this was based on GCN -> RDNA efficiencies seemed a bit farcical to me - they would rightly have been hauled over the hot coals if they were pulling that crap. It's nice they've confirmed with the number, but the info was already out there.

I'm wondering if Sony has been sitting at 10 or 11tf because they wanted a smaller profile but after seeing the big tower Microsoft showed they realized they have to follow suit and upclock everything as much as possible and create a new chassis and cooling solution to support it? I dunno... the silence seems very strange at this point.
Wouldn't surprise me at all if Sony randomly popped up and gave us a 12tf machine as well though.

Guys, even now after this news, Microsoft is still saying that "XSX is the most powerful console WE'VE ever made"....so I think Sony's PS5 might be a little bit more powerful, we'll see.

I like how Microsoft is pushing Sony to show their hands. Microsoft follows the news and forums, and can see that people are really excited for PS5 info. Reveal date, tech specs, etc etc. Last few weeks people were getting anxious and a bit pissed that there still wasn't any info available. By releasing a blogpost with a bit of information this really pushes Sony to give us something. The longer they wait, the worse it's going to get UNLESS Sony knows that they will blow the XSX out of the water.

Sony hasn't released numbers. So it can't be a fact of Most Powerful Console ever until that's revealed. They're covering their asses if that's not the case.

Brad Sams believes that MS knows it has the performance advantage which is why they just dropped this nugget at 9AM on a Monday with no fanfare. Essentially pouring water on the PS5 reveal before it comes out.

I think MS have edged Sony out, but aren't 100% sure yet. It sounds like maybe we will have Ultra HD twins next gen. At least, I hope they are close either way.

Absolutely agree, it was easy to extrapolate cause we had the rumors of 12tf. GH giving us 56cu made that easy.
1700 is a safe bet(though I'd wonder why not higher as we know they can do it with rdna2). GH doesn't mention clocks though, so to say 12tf proves GH 100% correct would be a reach.
Yeah, the longer they wait, the tougher their job will be. Even if they're both equal, MS made the 1st move. And as we know from the wired articles, sony wants to get ahead of the news and present it he way they want it. That might be slipping away.

In addition to that, every leak (if BS or true) said XSX lays around 12TF. Mostly it was the PS5 TF-count which differed significantly from leak to leak (between 9.x until 13.x). So TBH it isn't a miracle to guess 12TF for XSX.

You're mostly right. Graphically it'll scale just fine. However, if a game is designed with the asset streaming capabilities of a very fast SSD in mind, that just won't work on games with an HDD.
Which means, theoretically, you can have experiences on the newer consoles that just are not possible on last gen systems.
More than graphics, that is Ultimately the big point of differentiation. Graphics are easily scaled up or down to match the GPUs capabilities.

The only thing Microsoft are really missing out of the gate here is VR support but maybe it will be a surprise reveal at e3? Or maybe a year or two down the road? It'll come eventually... maybe not until wireless has become a standard though.

well you could also say that the One and PS4 are close in power. both systems run the same games at very similar settings more often than not.
usually a well optimised game runs at 1080p on PS4 and at 900p on Xbox One. that is a 40% gap in performance.
the github data would suggest a smaller than 40% GPU gap.
and this time no system is held back by slow RAM and massive bandwidth issues like the Xbox One was.
if a 40% gap in GPU performance resulted in a 1080p game running at 900p in this generation, a gap that is smaller (about 22% if the github stuff is true) would most likely result in something like slightly reduced settings and maybe a slightly less stable framerate on next gen systems.
and if you would want a game to run at the same settings and framerate you just had to reduce a 4k game to run at around 1950p
that is IF that game uses literally every bit of power of the Series X... if they have headroom left the games could run at the exact same resolution and settings with no issue whatsoever.

But if you think this type of leak DOESN'T effect Sony, you are crazy. Sony is watching the gaming news like the rest of us. Sony sees the tweets, sees the power. I also think your comment about our nerd bubble is VERY accurate but it also cuts the other way. People go where the games are, where their friends are, where the marketing is. It can effect a generation. How did the 360 sell so much and even compete (but lose) to the PS3 without taking some of that mindshare. Mindshare is huge and social media only amplifies that this generation.

I tell you, if the PS5 is 9tf or even 10tf and similar on price, Sony would've been caught totally flatfooted. I highly HIGHLY doubt they would do that but if it comes to pass, that is some insane tripping up. After such a massively successful generation with PS4.

In terms of compute performance sure. But a 9TF Navi chip is gonna be quite a lot faster than a 1080 in actual graphics performance.
