"But we are obviously principally occupied with getting ready for PS5. I think most businesses would find themselves challenged with the working-from-home environment, and I do think the way that the various groups within PlayStation have responded has been magnificent. There are the hardware engineers who are having to work without being able to get into China, where PS5 will be assembled. That's kind of tough. The software engineers who are building these great features, who are building a great PS5 UI... some of that can be readily done in isolation. But when it comes to putting it all together, that's not easy to do remotely and they're doing a great job.

"And finally, the people who make games. We, and our partners, seem to be coping really well. And so we are on track. We are going to launch this holiday and we're going to launch globally. We're really looking forward to it and it's going to be a blast."

"For a system to take the full advantage of the next gen CPU/GPUs, the amount of data needed to be streamed in and out of memory is pretty big," Peklar explained. "That's the main reason why both console manufactures went with the SSDs and a specialized I/O approach. This approach was pretty much a necessity. You could, for example, get similar results with average SSD speeds and more memory. You would have to preload more game data into memory, but on the other hand your SSD wouldn't need to fetch that much data every second. When next-gen engines start to incorporate these kinds of workflows, some new possibilities will open up in theory. Like having an open world game with high fidelity assets found in smaller scale games, or as they said in the Unreal 5 tech demo, movie quality assets."

"There are two reason why this is not possible on current gen. One is hardware," he said. "Mechanical drives simply can't keep up with the amount of data- there's not enough memory, current CPU/GPU would struggle to compute it all adequately etc. Second is the amount of work/time needed for developers to create all these very high quality assets, for any game size, let alone for a large open world game.

Peklar suggested in conclusion that as far as the difference between the SSDs that both next-gen consoles employe is concerned, it's effectively not going to seem as big as it seems on paper right now. "As for differences between the two solutions I feel that it will end up a matter of diminishing returns," he said.

Why are you so insecure about your favorite console, that you have to lie? Only first party MS games have to work on XOne (Or rather they will have XOne version). And that's for first year only. Basically all the games that would be cross gen anyway like Halo Infinite, maybe Forza. Most of MS studios are in early stages of development of their games.

Speaking with GameSpot sister site CNET, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan confirmed that there has been no interruption to Sony's plan to launch PS5 worldwide later this year. "We remain absolutely on track," he said. "We're going to launch this holiday, we will have a global launch. And we're greatly looking forward to it. And we very much want the gaming world to look forward to it, too."

"Right now, we're not seeing anything saying to us there's going to be problems with quantities or we won't be able to launch the way we want," Ryan told CNET, matching up with what the company had indicated earlier this year.

In an interview with the BBC, Ryan also noted that the ongoing pandemic has not impacted a decision regarding PS5's price.

I completely get why people say that, without thinking beyond the space it takes up in their house....but the size and weight of the box when selling 10s or 100s of millions of a device has a huge environmental impact on the world we live in - and I say that as someone that doesn't prioritize green issues.

For Playstation to take the same attitude, they would seem out of step(IMHO) with their excellent green conscious designs and the more thoughtful public desire to do better with green initiatives. yesterday was a bad day IMHO where Xbox tweeted it is good they don't care about our world.'s resources They'll waste electric for fixed cpu/gpu clocks that are very inefficient - to FUD a superior design -, just to push a pathetic marketing strategy that panders to less educated gamers.

I want a quiet console/s, but more as a by-product of great engineering rather than one of wasteful design..

Well what would you rather? Games but no box like Sony, or box but no games ....

You might be a box fetishist, but 99% of the people who will buy this will buy it for the games.

Personally I think they will show something - even if it's not physically present but just a pic. Otherwise it'll leak from the manufacturers.
