The Jizz guy gets my support on this one. I just can't buy the only way to play Xbox online is via gamepass sub, it's insane. Free online or go home.

Yeah but I can already hear Phil Spencer saying "Xbox Live online multiplayer is free for all Xbox gamers.... on Game Pass."

What I imagine they'll do is give every Xbox Live Gold subscriber a "free" upgrade to Game Pass for however much term they have left on their subscription. So they can start saying Game Pass however many millions of active subscribers that Xbox Live currently has.

If anything, they'll drop any required service for Free-to-play multiplayer like Warzone and Fortnite. Then for regular paid online games I could see them just requiring Game Pass. The interesting thing is what happens to Games with Gold and store discounts if Xbox Live goes away? Do they stop giving people free games and deals? Or is that added into Game Pass Ultimate or soemthing?

Yeah I can see them doing an interview. They're basically part of Eurogamer and I'm sure Sony will play nice with them. I think Cerny gave Richard an interview about the PS4 Pro back in 2016 too. I just doubt (especially given COVID) that they'd let anyone outside of Sony tear down the hardware. The PS4 Pro one was great. The guy just takes apart every part of the console (so many screws). I just want to see the back of the fucking console. SHOW EM THE PORTS

my guess is power, HDMI Ethernet, and 1 more USB. I think they ditched optical and that proprietary aux port for the camera.

This is my expectation, but I also think this 'teardown' will serve as an event to talk more about features that haven't been disclosed yet. I also expect DF to have a hands on with the PS5 to showcase some of those features, just like they used Geoff to showcase the DualSense (even with COVID going on).

On a whole other level, I personally don't see an issue with this. Instead of seeing it as XBL is added to Game Pass, see it as Game Pass is being added to XBL. They'll drop the free 4 games a month, and just add +100 games and xCloud to it.

The stupidest closure by Sony IMHO was Evolution. I mean, closing them because a PS4 launch game didn't sell enough is quite frankly moronic. A Driveclub 2 or new Motorstorm would sell very well with the current install base.

I think it was more the manner of the launch. It was a cluster fuck. I love the game, it's one of my favourite PS4 titles and racers of all time. At launch it was a mess though, largely related to the network code. If it launched how it eventually ended up then it would be a very different story - but there are plenty of games like that these days.

Well, Mark Cerny did an exclusive interview with Digital Foundry that went on (not the interview video, but the article) after the Road to PS5. I can see them doing at least a post-teardown interview with DF.

IMO, Richard already prepared the grounds with his recent SSD on PS4 Pro video, where he shows proof that the SSD can reduce pop-in and improve IQ.

Yeah I just watched that video, have included a timestamped link below from when he talks about next-gen and the reduced pop-in for PS4 games.

This is good news for cross platform open world games on the next gen consoles. If a few PS4 open world games can be improved so easily with an SSD think what the ultra fast SSDs and dedicated (bottleneck reducing) hardware will be able to do on the new consoles.

Even if a developer doesn't spend a large amount of time optimising their engine for the new consoles, they'll still be able to stream in very high quality textures and data with little fuss.

Number of CUs? No, the majority of things was designed around that 36 CUs number.
Bandwidth of the RAM? Maybe, no one knows if Sony really needs a bump but more is always better.
Frequencies? No, the thermal design was made around those frequencies.
Storage? No, 825GB is inherent to 12 channels. To bump it to 1.65GB would be too expensive.

I don't see the requirement to pay for online simply being bundled into GP as it stands. I can see free-to-play no longer needing a sub, gold and GwG disappearing and being replaced by a cheaper GamePass lower tier of some sort though. Maybe not including XBox Studios games on release? Or just including XBox Studios games?

MS are not going to just give up the Gold revenues. Their plan will be to shift those subs onto a GP sub of some description or to increase GP subs by bringing in more people who aren't current Gold subscribers.

A big chunk of Evo are now a team at Codemasters. I don't see how that's possible. This is why I'd like them to get Codies to do it. If a remaster trilogy does well then get them to make a full on PS5 sequel.

They can probably do something like allow CPU SMT to be disabled - might get a small perf boost in mulitplats or code that can't make use of multi threading.

Other than that, I think a change to the APU TDP is possible which would provide more power for processing and therefore less need for power optimisation and a slight bump in performance.

But the TDP isn't a published spec as yet so we wouldn't see that change.

There are of course a lot of other components - a "slight" boost to performance could come from other component optimisations.

If you think the GPU is "very weak" then nothing they can do at this stage will change your opinion there. Even unlocking 2 additional CUs will only bring it up to 10.8 TF. While every bit of performance is welcome, we don't know how much TDP headroom is left and it does nothing for them marketing wise so I personally don't see this happening.

If the rumours are true and Sony are planning to include a remastered Spiderman with Miles Morales, then maybe they'll show off the differences before launch, if not Digital Foundry will do it for them afterwards

Spiderman is Richard Leadbetter's 'game of the generation', and he recently did a video upping it to 60fps with AI, so they'll definitely be doing an in-depth comparison whatever happens, should be good.

As MS' soc is considerably wider their yields are likely to be worse tbh. Just because they are on the same process node doesnt mean their yield rate will be comparable.

That said i dont think there is any weight to unlocking more cus, or an upclock.

Was it ever confirmed by Sony that the PS5 APU contains 40CUs with 36CUs enabled? Or just that it has 36CUs? Given what Cerny said in the road to PS% about constant boosting and heat, and balancing the distribution of the heat, I assumed it is just 36CUs - without disabled CUs - because 6x6 is a natural square number, just like 64ROPs ( 8x8) and maybe even 16 ACEs (4x4 ) which would possibly allow for even distribution of components in natural squares - like square rings, one inside the other or regularly interlacing/striding - with a even distribution of transistors, which should help eliminate APU surface hotspots; which I assume was the plan to allow for high clock speeds.

If the solution is the 36 of 40 CUs, then I can only assume they will use the 4 spares in some way to chase hotspots across the surface, by rapidly changing the disabled CUs so that the warmest point is constantly moving - a little like using a hot hair dryer and constantly moving its focus.

Wouldn't a lot of the chips be faulty, with some of the unused CUs being non-operational? Seems like a lot of trouble to do something that you couldn't do consistently across all units.

Agreed moving from 14gbs chips to 16, or even 18? will make the biggest difference across the board. The latest devkits have 18gbs so its not out of the question, but will depend if its worth the cost differential

And weak to what, what are you comparing this system to. Can you give me a comparison to what you are comparing the ps5 gpu too.

That's how they will spin this, but at the end of the day you would now have to pay $10/mo. vs. $5/mo for Gold (who wasn't using the yearly deals, tbh.). There are rumors that Sony could also combine subscription services and get to around that $10/mo. figure themselves. This is a move to increase recurring revenue, both companies could lose some subs, but when you are doubling revenue you can afford those hits.

With MS, the online service fee is just odd when PC and mobile don't require that fee. And they really haven't explained Xcloud in detail yet, are they positioning that as a Stadia competitor long-term (running their own store) or a GeforceNow competitor where it is just a cloud service with Steam and Epic along for the ride? MS needs to clear these kind of questions up, let people know where you stand.

If there is an improvement it will be precisely that, however I have read that they have quite an impact on the TDP of the PS5 going from 14 gbps to 16 gbps.

If you have opted for 16 gbps, the decision has taken months, or they had various hardware ready to make the right choice.

I still think the I / O controller is CU based, using 2 CU for I / O controller and 2 CU for tempest (36 CU enabled + 2SPU). It is possible that the CU I / O were shared with the GPU. In other words, the GPU had 36 CUs but an ACE towards I / O and placed the I / O at the appropriate times.

Enabling 2 CU would not be crazy, maybe all the hardware is designed for 36 CU but you could use the 2 new CUs to execute I / O in a super stable way and also serve as a springboard and improvement due to the GDDR 16 gbps, in addition to release an ACE. (Getting 38 CU + 2 SPU)

It may also be that the I / O controller is based on CU but outside of Slice. And an improvement of 2 CU can serve to put more ACE in parallel. Although everything was designed to fill 36 CU, if you improve the memory to 16 gbps you can already fill 38 CU without problem. There will be no CU upload without memory improvements, that is clear to me.

Because of this, if there is an improvement, it will almost certainly be that of memory, and then what Sony have been able to put. Improving the CU will improve the CPU to keep at the same point where it is just as easy to cool down as it is to heat up the CPU + GPU just like Cerny said on Road to PS5.

Very weak compared to what exactly? Raw perf that is 8x the PS4, nearly 4x PS4 Pro, and around a RTX 2080-RTX 2080 Super is hardly "very weak". This has been discussed and explained to death at this point but whether or not it met your personal expectations, there is no way you can describe the PS5 GPU as "very weak" by anything commercially available today.

PS5 is already at the chip logic limit (or pretty close to it). I highly doubt any clock speed increase is coming. They might enable all 40 CUs, but that is unlikely as well. Xbox might be able to clock the GPU higher, but it depends on thermals and power draw.

Honestly, I don't care about the tflop difference anymore, I think a lot of us don't. Especially after seeing what Sony has to offer, games like Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet and Clank, GT7, Demon Souls and they look better than anything Xbox has showed off thus far.

Microsoft have already won the "power narrative" but it's served them poorly in recent months, it's the games that do the talking. I mean unless Microsoft have a game to show off which looks "significantly" better than anything Sony has showed off or will show off in the coming months, a spec bump especially in the APU would be meaningless.

Just my 2 cents.
