They can't really do that (IMO) because of the much bigger interest DirectX represents to Windows, and the importance of PC gaming to windows for maintaining their home PC market share.. In a worst case scenario they would merely retreat DirectX to the PC, and maybe broker a deal with Sony to let them use their IPs on console, in exchange for revenues that matched their returns of those IPs on xbox, along with Sony agreeing to develop the PC port of those games for Microsoft to sell in the Windows store to help fend off Valve and Epic.

If Xbox fails and leaves the console market, I suspect it will be because making games at the level of PlayStation first party is beyond dev funding, technical ability and powerful hardware. Microsoft would then surely realise the damage to their valuable IPs failing to make the quality jump in the long run, and would rather have Sony help them make the jump and keep the money flowing, than just mothballing them like Sega did.

I think they might sell both SKUs without the controller to be honest. That way they can lower the price of the console. Plus there isn't much difference between the XSX and the X1 controller so they can do this easily. This should make it easier for X1 owners to transition over to the new systems.

I agree with you, I think. I will add, no matter how portable, powerful a device gets... if the ability to get reasonably priced service that can support the hardware Isn't there, the hardware becomes irrelevant.

As for less expensive hardware. I think that varies. I mean, sure, VR is getting cheaper as are other devices in tech as they mature... but.. then you have something like Air Pods. They're the successor to standard ear pods and pretty priceY, even against other wireless ear buds.

I mean less expensive in the sense that tech is ever-improving so naturally the price point for a given amount of performance goes ever down. What we can buy for $500 today is far superior to what we could buy for $500 7 years ago.

I think people compare video game streaming to video/music streaming and those comparisons just fall flat for me. It's different in too many ways to compare both technically and market wise for me.

This is one of the ideas MLiD had about XSX because it could be easily targeted to fathers that need to buy their kids a PC for school, or College students that can easily have a very small PC for work and to play videogames.

I know I have some relatives that still game on the launch day Xbox One as well as his 2 boys. He hopes like crazy there is a $300 lockhart he wants to upgrade all 3 systems and still plays on his 65" 1080p TV.

Hell I have a Forza 6 bundle Xbox on a 43" and if I buy into XsX as my main console I will grab a controller less Lockhart to replace that one.

And I am far from poor as someone else stated.

I'm unsure that extra ~$100 makes that a worthwhile sale for them compared to an Xbox sale at ~$500.. Just too much money in that licensing game on the XBox side, and on the Windows Front MS is in the business of selling Windows licenses to OEMs.. they've never been in the business of undercutting those same partners with unrealistic hardware prices for what would probably still be a pretty low profit margin when all is said and done.

Yeah, I completely agree there. You're absolutely right. The gross majority of people wouldn't know what goes into streaming games. To be fair, as technologically aware as I might consider myself, I'm not even sure I actually care too much about the how. I only tend to concern myself with the how much will it cost and is it a good consumer investment end of things.

Upgrading to what? A console that will play every game available on Xbox Series X game targeted at 1080p for the next two years? That's called an Xbox One that your relative bought in 2013. Except that 2013 box has a disc drive (which Lockhart is rumored not to have).

I posted this before but the audience for this thing doesn't really exist. There is this specific gamer who wants a next gen console at launch but doesn't care about graphics, but cares enough for 1080p & is price conscious, but isn't interested in a cheaper 1080p PS4/Xbox One or is in a rush to replace their cheaper PS4/Xbox One purchase for a console that'll play almost the same games at the same resolution.

There is a reason why MS hasn't announced this thing yet.

They revealed the Series X with a controller. I assume at least that SKU will have a controller, cables, etc.

I have a feeling we won't be seeing a back button attachment for the DualSense, unless they make some type of 'Pro' controller, those metal plates next to the headphone back are probably only for the charging the controller, so you can just drop it on the charge base instead of having to deal with a port to align.

I bet there are tons of casual gamers who can't wait to upgrade from playing 2K at 1080p 60fps on PS4/Xbox One to playing 1080p 60fps on Lockhart. I bet it's the reason why were 3 months from a new console launch and it hasn't even been announced. MS don't want the casuals to line up too early!

But Game Pass is digital only, so I think they will make a cheap Lockhart digital only. Maybe casuals are fine with 1080p. Has to be really cheap to work though, probably like $0 down and $25/month for Game Pass + box.

What I said is that if they assume they're selling a controller-less SKU to people who already have Xbox, then most probably they already are Gamepass subscribers. They need new subscriptions.
