Do you have know how much MS makes from 3rd party licenses? That would be gone. The 3rd party games on game pass would be gone too. So all they'd have is 1st party games. If that's the case then game pass wouldn't need to exist at all. Xbox live gold would be gone too. They have to PAY Sony a % for their license and dev kits. And xcloud wouldn't work cause it would be competing with PSnow. And all that work developing those systems would be lost too. All for games Sony fans hate? Where is this major source of revenue coming from again?
Perhaps you just don't want MS in the console space cause I don't see how going 3rd party generates more than what they'd lose. They have the best hardware going into the next generation. I'm pretty sure Xbox isn't going anywhere. Quote me on that.
I'm not sure it matters what I or anyone else here thinks about MS presence in the console space. Although for the record I don't think MS are a particularly strong competitor in the console HW market so I'd be happy enough to see them duck out and another company take a stab at it.
But either way, it's MS messaging that they're not that interested in the custom hardware space - that's why I say it doesn't matter what we think. MS strategy isn't custom hardware focused any more - they've made that decision now.
As for GP in PlayStation - that will come if MS are indeed pursuing their strategy to its logical conclusion. The only question is if it happens during the PS5 gen.
It makes sense both for MS who get a bigger subscriber base and it makes sense for Sony because it hastens the end of MS as a hardware competitor.
So it'll come. 3rd parties won't matter for the same reason as they don't matter on GP today - GP gets 3rd party indies or old games that don't make money any more through standalone sales channels.
