So forgive me for this one again - but the PS5 having 664 GB of free space clearly is true. Guy just leaked it rn again lol.

Is that listed in GiB (base 2) or GB (base 10) in the OS?

I thought PS OS used GB (base 10) but I remember someone told me it was using GiB (base 2).

Obviously the 825 GB (base 10) = 768 GiB (base 2) has been covered.

So is it 825-664 or 768-664 to get the reserved space for the OS ?

Also just basic logic.. what you are saying makes no sense in any way shape or form.. especially considering the fact that it is not more energy efficient to spread the processing out over time at lower frequencies.. but it's actually more energy efficient to quickly process calls and then idle.. hence the entire concept of "Race to idle."

There is literally no reason not to give full clock speeds to a light workload.

I'd prefer a game save cache feature like Xbox but let each user to decide if they want it.

On Xbox they reserve like 40 GB of space for those RAM states, even if the user doesn't use QR. They can't get that space back, for storage for downloading games.

Thats my issue. I want full control of it, as the user.

Why not just let every user have as much of the SSD as possible, but also let them save their game states however they want? As many/few as they want, just like how recording gameplay video works.

If the user doesn't want to use it, they have more free space. Or someone could (in theory) just cache like 15 game states to the SSD if they had enough room and wanted to.

The PS4 also has "applications" plural in it's rest mode message; it's just saying you can have any of your games suspended.

Why would "rest mode" even say that? Unless the PS5 can literally run more than one game at the same time your "rest mode" message wouldn't be suspending plural games.

I don't find the switcher thing all that meaningful either. That term can be used to launch things too particularly with how fast the PS5 can launch games.

edit: To be clear I'm not saying it absolutely DOESNT have such a function, but I really don't think it does.. I believe MS is achieving that by way of using a hypervisor (which they used last gen).. Sony didn't use a hypervisor last gen and really just hasn't discussed anything like quick resume.

Here's the obvious thing in the UI video - watch how they show the sequence:

1. the user is playing Sackboy - the game is running
2. the user joins a multiplayer match in a new game Destruction Allstars from control center - but Sackboy is running.
3. Sackboy was never closed. There is no warning to the user that Sackboy will be closed.
4. On PS4 the user is always warned "your current game will be closed" if you try to boot a 2nd game
5. On the PS5, no warning. This shows clearly the 1st game was not closed, but just suspended.
6. This is not possible on PS4. Multi-game launch/suspend was shown.

They are playing Sackboy and launch another game from control center without any warning of losing progress or game close. This shows the first game is clearly preserved (suspended) not closed, or else the user would be warned.

It is in GB. They rather use Go on the box than GiB, this isn't common knowledge, they don't want to confuse people.

Yeah, even launching Netflix on PS4 prompt you about suspending your current game.

This is a good point; but it's also just a totally different UX than PS4. PS4 there's no indication that something else is running when looking at the screen; on PS5 the game is running in the background in the UX. There is no need to remind you that something else is going to close in order to launch what you selected.

But like I said; not saying it absolutely doesn't have it though.

But if it does.. man I'll never get behind this "keep things secret" marketing lol

There is the same need to warn the user "you may lose your game progress" if the user tries to switch games.

Even if just for accidental presses, users (kids) could be confused/upset if they open control center and accidentally join a new game and close their game they were playing and lose all their progress.

The PS4 style warning would clearly be there if the risk to lose progress was too.

Buy PS5 digital, play fortnite, warzone, dozens of others completely free online. The biggest games out there. Till MS allows free to play to actually mean 'Free', PS5 is the value proposition for the lil ones.

PS4 shows GiB.

500GB PS4 (465GiB) shows 408GiB total size for your use... so about 57GiB is system reserved.

PS5 should be 768GiB - 664 GiB = 104GiB reserved by the system.

It's good to bring up differences and highlight them; that doesn't make comparing different ways of spending money to play games a "logical fallacy."

Gamepass is also not directly analogous with any rental service.. it's also different in it's own ways... it offers a certain value.. as does buying, using a rental service.. and any combination of the above.

There's other explanations for why in that video it didn't warn the user. It could be that the game is broadcasting it's in a state that allows you to exit without asking.

Or it's doing some sort of quick resume feature like what we've seen on Xbox.. it's possible, but to me it's far from obvious. I hope it's configurable though if it is there. Still not sure how much I'll actually get use out of a feature like that vs. how much I'll need the SSD space.

The system UX/UI cannot be designed around hoping some games would tell the user "now is fine to quit" or else the PS4 UX/UI would be the same.

Seems obvious they have to include the basic warnings for closing/launching every game just in case, as they do on PS4.

And yeah, that leaker just said it has multi-suspend and all this will be shown once the Nov 6th embargo lifts on Friday. So seems likely lol

I'm calling it. PS5 SDK/architecture differentiates data types. It knows to segregate game data vs game assets. Suspending a game results in only a ~few meg written out to ssd, resuming it, game data is re-loaded and assets are loaded from the install; and you are back to where you were.

Unlimited game suspend/resume - low space required. This is the secret surprise hinted at.

That's not what I said. A game could be required to have a status flag of sorts that the system reads to determine whether the game can be quit without asking. That's not abnormal stuff at all.

But if some leaker confirmed it they confirmed it.. *shrug*

I'm not sure how technically feasible this is, but I think it has been discussed that the PS5's SDK does allow the reference assets straight from the the SSD directly by some kind of abstracted ID. If this is the case then maybe what you're saying it's possible. Rather than actually dumping all these assets to SSD they just dump the references and on resume the I/O solution is so fast they can all be loaded back in within seconds 🤔

Also if it was possible, you could in theory have a resume state for every game on your console and maybe even multiple for each game 🤯

And from what we've seen of Spider Man MM launching on the UI, the way GTAV 5 does it looks wrong.

Yes, I do. I can't fanthom a device using GiB to inform an average user, it just leads to confusion and right now the last thing they want is "Oh the number on the box is misleading!".

161GB OS doesn't seem too far fetched when you compare to the XSX, but yeah, it's BIG.

If you noticed some games with manual savings, that actually is a system level feature. So I would imagine if system just call that and drop a save while loading assets of the switched game.

Maybe this also explains why PS5 uses a new save file format and cross gen games can't just use the same save game like they do on Xbox 🤷‍♂️

If it is like PS4 then it is 104GiB reserved to OS (768 - 664).
