Neymar looks Set to Smash World Record Signing for PSG for £197 million ($253m)

I agree, he's been instrumental for Swansea.

Even more, with all the money sloshing about the Premier League, Swansea are right to hedge their bets and eek out as much as possible for a transfer fee, especially near the windows end.

A part of me always wanted to see how he could do in my team Arsenal, he fits our style quite well.

I find it crazy that he didn't make it at Spurs, he could have made it in that 2012 Liverpool team as well if he hadn't rejected them.

If Elaine was counting off the amount in hundreds, based on this gif it would take her a full 29 days to count the entire sum of this dude's payday.

Insane.

Sigurdsson plays for Swansea & Iceland, for better or worse he is used to being the player who makes the team tick. I just wonder if he may not deal well playing in a team where he is not THE GUY. Its purely conjecture, but I have often wondered if that may be an issue for him.

I'm not talking nonsense, I said essentially part of the same deal, not officially. Liverpool decided that they would only let Torres go if they got Carroll from Newcastle to replace him. One wouldn't have happened without the other. They wanted Carroll + 15m, so Newcastle essentially set the Torres price by demanding 35m for Carroll.

Easily the worst transfer of all time, the fact that it is still our record transfer over 6 years later is depressing.

It has always been nonsense logic tbf

It makes no sense for the club not to want to sell Torres for the most they can possibly get (which they did), and to also buy Carroll for the least they possibly could (which they clearly didn't).

The two were only related in that Liverpool needed to line up a replacement striker and suddenly had £50m burning a hole in their pocket.

I don't know. Football generates an incredible amount of money and if you give that money to the people who make everything possible in the first place then is it not really immoral.

Football generates an insane amount of money by ripping off the fans. There is nothing moral about ripping off the fans.

I hope Neymar flops at PSG. And there is a good chance of that happening too. Not that it really matters, this is about buying a meme more than it is buying a good player. Not that Neymar isn't a good player.

Good luck in a competition that nobody watches aside from the French.
But it could be good for him if he gets more responsibility. He's a great player and we'll see him in the Champions League.

Shirt prices and in England ticket prices are a rip off compared to the rest of Europe, I can get a ticket to some FC Barcelona games cheaper than lower league English football.

Why not just watch it on TV or a stream? I'd much rather keep my hard earned than spend it on a shirt on a guy who'll probably leave in a few years anyways.

Depends on club and league. You can get a seat for Frankfurt games for ~18 euro.

Too be honest I don't think ticket prices are an issue in mainland Europe. In England it is insane, my nearest club (Coventry City FC) is League 2 (Fourth tier) and the cheapest ticket is £22 and they wonder why the stadium is mostly empty on match days.

Being at a game is completely different to watching it on a TV or stream, I've been fortunate to go to 2 Barca v Real Madrid games in the past 3 years and the experience doesn't compare, even then I paid under £100 for the tickets to each match so it was reasonable to me for what is probably the biggest club game in the world.

With regards to shirts, everyone wants to express their love for what they enjoy, whether it be a t-shirt of a favourite band or TV show etc. The clubs and suppliers could make them cheaper, but the manufacturers have a monopoly on the team they supply so can charge what they want.

Literally everything about football is a rip off. Shirt prices, ticket prices, subscription prices. It's madness.

Not really.

Just to take PSG as an exemple, you can get a subscription for 450€ and you have access to every match. That's 18€ the tickets for every ligue 1 game at home and 6 games of Champions league. I didn't even account for the cups which would drive the price down.

And that's the most expensive in France:

Tickets aren't that expensive either, but yes shirt prices are a bit to much. Gotta complain to Adidas and the rest though, football team aren't setting those prices and I'm pretty sure they're the same in the other major sports.

Just so long as everyone fucks off and leaves Siggy where he is I'll be a happy man. Glad we put a crazy price tag on his head.

You also have to pay extortionate rates to watch on TV though.

Yeah very true, but it's not that bad to maybe go once a week to the pub to watch I think. Well that's what I used to do with mates in Australia.

Oh I know nothing beats watching the game at the game, but when I hear what the ticket prices are like in England, it completely prices me out. I feel sorry for Arsenal fans! The prices in Germany and mainland Europe are much more affordable. At some point, I'm assuming the complaining stops and people just have to watch it on TV?

I bought an Everton shirt last year on their website, I think it was around 70 pounds? It's not too bad compared to the ticket prices.

That is an absolutely stupid amount of money, just sucks that a really effective combination of goal scorers is getting broken up.

PSG actually makes sense for Neymar because he'd be a huge fish in a tiny pond. Unlike the Premier league there's no danger that he'd be outshone.

Even if, worst case scenario, they don't win the league this year he is still undoubtedly the biggest brand in French football which translates to emerging markets.

This makes no sense. Neymar went to PSG to win titles and compete in CL. Plenty of quality players that play for PSG have proven themselves in other leagues. Zlatan just destroyed everyones expectations when he went to the Premier League and that was when he was 35.

If Neymar went to the Premier League, he would easily be one of the best players. No Premier league team bought him because most of the top dogs have already spend the same amount of money for 4 players

That's an immoral amount to pay for one player. Fuck the market. There needs to be a cap.

Lets put a £100k cap per week on players wages, and instead of players blowing it all on houses, cars and parties and paying all the tax that goes with it, the owners of clubs can hoard it instead.

No wait.

I used to post in that thread... before all the shit happened :p

Funny Neymar mentioned wanting to play in the same team as Coutinho...

Huh interesting, PSG held on to Verratti and now they get Neymar.

I don't see Barca replacing him with more than 1 world class player (Coutinho or Dybala) their clubs now will ask for double the price they were asking for LUL

I guess it'll also depend if Barça offers enough to end either one of their contracts they, the players, might want to leave too.

That's an immoral amount to pay for one player. Fuck the market. There needs to be a cap.

Technically it exists if Financial Fair Play is to be taken seriously...

If that is what Neymar is worth in the open market, why should his value be artificially capped? FFP is silly to begin with. Way too many loopholes as is often the case with any such regulations.

Apparently, the PSG owners found a loophole by hiring Neymar as one of the Qatar WC committee members and transferring the amount to his account as 'payment', which he can then use to pay the exit clause in his contract.

wonder who barca will buy, if they are buying a new forward, is munir still on loan? i thought he was decent enough, offense is not the problem anymore for barca so a homegrown product should be good enough
heard they're aiming for coutinho and dybala, i doubt juventus would sell dybala though

I wouldn't be confident of Barca spending the Neymar money wisely, just look at the dross they've signed over the last few years. Their transfer plan is extremely scattergun.

They'll be fine as long as they go through with the plan to have Messi sit back a bit. He can tear through markers and defenses like he always does and distribute the ball in ridiculously dangerous positions. You don't need a crazy good number 9, just someone with a level head and able to move around Messi.

Suarez would have been a bigger loss, since he has the ability to carve out chances solo.

Barcelona released a communiqué

The player Neymar Jr, accompanied by his father and agent, has informed FC Barcelona this morning of his decision to leave the Club in a meeting held at the Club’s offices.

Faced with this position, the Club has informed them they refer to the buy-out clause of his existing contract which as of 1 July totals 222 million euros which will have to be deposited in its entirety.

It's done.

Seen tweets saying that La Liga are refusing to accept the release clause money because it has doubts that the money has arrived in accordance with FFP rules.
