Neymar looks Set to Smash World Record Signing for PSG for £197 million ($253m)

Crazy I wonder how long before this transfer fee is topped. I assume Barcelona will have to make its acquisitions before the alleged Mbappe move. This sets up for a pretty interesting August.

Seen tweets saying that La Liga are refusing to accept the release clause money because it has doubts that the money has arrived in accordance with FFP rules.

La liga has no say in this. The contract and buyout clause is with the club.

from the BBC reaction page

"For the price of Neymar, PSG could have bought 792,000,000 Freddos..."

makes you think

I mean, this is all kinds of crazy due to the values involved, but we're witnessing history. It's gonna be one of those transfers that people will always remember (for positive, negative or whatever motives).

Not really. Gareth Bale was once the highest one, and even with those that I know understand a bit of football they go "who?" after all this time. People will talk about this for a few months, remember it when PSG wins / loses something and move on.

Yep. More people would remember Shearers (for example) transfer atleast here.

Neymar is a marketing juggernaut compared to Gareth Bale. Now excluding that, the transfer itself will make it relevant from years to come. Either the process is going to be unique or it's setting a new precedent.

Did UEFA give up on FFP?

From Gabrielle Marcotti on twitter a few days ago regarding FFP

FFP works on rolling 3-year periods. IF Neymar moves he will hit PSG accounts for 2017-18. And PSG will be assessed in 2018-19 for it. And that assessment in 2018-19, will include 2017-18, 2016-17 and 2015-16. So there's nothing UEFA can do now. If there is an inflated sponsorship from parties related to PSG (and, let's face it, there is, then UEFA will assess it like they did last time (and like they do with every related-party transaction). They won't look at the total number but give it a value based on benchmarks. That's what they did with City and what they did with PSG last time. If PSG is in breach, UEFA will likely offer a settlement agreement that will include sanctions. If other clubs think the sanctions are too soft, they can appeal and take it the CFCB Adjudicatory branch. Their word is final. (Except for CAS appeal).

Yup, I think it's gonna set a new precendent. Because of this move and Barca likely wanting to fill the gap left by Neymar they will have to go very far for a replacement. Like it wouldn't surprise me if this month we're gonna see another 150m+ move of someone like Dybala. And in turn that will probably lead to another big 100m+ transfer to Juve for example.

The market basically reached another cap this tranfer window and now we just wait for the first 500m+ transfer.

There are so few elite players, odds are you are not replacing Dybala with a comperable talent.

From Gabrielle Marcotti on twitter a few days ago regarding FFP

The information from Marcotti is actually incorrect.

They said City's deal with Etihad was perfectly fine. It's probably actually undervalued at £40 million a year as it included shirt, stadium and overall campus with the training ground.

City were fined for overspending during a period before FFP was invented as the rules were back dated by around 3 seasons once they came into effect.

The PSG sponsorship was reduced by UEFA however.

If Bale was worth 100m, then Neymar is easily worth twice that amount. This is how the market works, how idiotic it has become. Biggest Brazillian star, present at every WC, and a more versatile and talented player. Younger as well. He has more worldwide appeal by a mile.

Due to his age hes also worth more than Messi and CR.

Absolutely right.

I get that, but at the same time if feels like a potential historic move (for him in particular). Remember when Figo moved from Barça to RM? This is a bit of distilled version of that. While he isn't moving to their arch nemesis, people in Barcelona are already branding him as a traitor. They will not forget this, at all. Much like they didn't forget the Figo move. And that's still a move well remembered in modern football.

Imagine now that he flops. It'll be remembered as a dumb move for the ages, potentially ruining his career.
Imagine now that he actually does well and wins, say, at least 1 CL for PSG and finally gets to fight for the Balon D'Or? It'll be remembered as ballsy move that worked well for him.

Also Neymar, I feel, is at a different level of worldwide popularity than Bale, so his actions might have a lot more repercussion amongst football fans. Though that could just be me, I have no real data or reasoning for this.

He won't flop. Dive, but not flop, lol. He's very talented, he adapted rather quickly at the camp nou as well. A difficult squad to fit in, players like Zlatan didn't succeed.

He can break his ankle or something, but I think he'll do well at PSG. If they can make that jump to a CL win, not sure. RM and Barca are ridiculously constant in finals. Its no accident they never lost one for ages.

Ditto. We are essentially talking about arguably the third best player on the planet. He is not Kyrie Irving for god's sake.

Absolutely disgusting. 222 million euros paid on the backs of slaves. Sadly nothing will change unless the UEFA get really tough on teams introducing salary and transfer caps.

True the answer to the moral issue of PSG's owners is to introduce measures to artificially cap the earning potential of players and establish a cartel that will funnel a larger share of the money to the owners.

This makes sense and I thought it through.

Again why should there be transfer caps? Soccer has never been about parity. You have a handful of mega clubs and within that realm a handful of them have this kind of spending power. Players are getting paid and that is how it should be.

Release clauses are fucking stupid, especially for a top club like barcellona.

They have buy-out clauses in Spain (In comparison to release clauses in England) and they are mandatory for Spanish contracts. The player literally has to buy himself out from the contract, though in most cases, it's the buying club that fork up the money.

French League isn't bad. PSG, Monaco, OL, OM, Nice have good squads. Its behind PL, Bundesliga and La Liga. And it just lacks appeal. Serie A has more appeal as well and is improving lately.

But if you narrow it down to European clubs who can sign Neymar, then its probably RM, Chelsea, MU, MCity and PSG. Bayern I know is against these kind of transfers. England and RM probably weren't options for him. And i can onderstand him wanting to get out of Messi's shadow. He wants no. 10, free Kicks, penalties etc.

I don't even know what to say.

Guess it's a smart move from Neymar from a career perspective, PSG finally winning that champions league under his lead.

A few thoughts on this.

- Yes, the money is absurd. But if you look at the source, it makes sense. The way the game has evolved (at least the business/transfer side of things), now the richest of the rich are involved and to pry away a top 5 player in the game from a top 5 big club, this is the cost. It kinda makes a joke of the FFP.

- Neymar is gonna score buckets in Ligue 1. Like 40+ goals good.

- Can't wait for the inevitable PSG/Barca CL matchup.

- If someone like Lucas Moura is maybe no longer required at PSG, Mou needs to jump on that. He'd be a great addition as we lack proven wingers.

- And what's of most interest personally is who Barca buy now and the potential domino effect it has all over Europe. I'm sure they can buy both Dembele and Dybala with that money and still come out unscathed, perhaps even improved. Maybe they swoop for Mbappe and piss off their rivals? Gonna be an entertaining August till the window closes.
