The Niners/Giants should be good. The pass rush was lacking against Washington and I'm not sure if it's because Jean-Francois was playing or just the lack of any blitzes. The Niners best tactic vs Eli's deepball will be getting to him quickly enough.

There was a lack of intensity in general on the niners like they knew the win was in the bag already so they played down to the competition...the pressure was there as the line did a good job consistently collapsing the pocket. Beck just managed to escape. the biggest concern though was that the secondary was pretty cushy in general and left a lot of deep routes open(announcers repeatedly pointed this out). The redskins didn't capitalize however because beck has tunnel vision...nor did they even get into the redone until that last drive..

Feels good to be 7-1, another dominating defensive performance.

Offensively there is still much to be desired, leaving too many points on the field and not converting on third down. Frank is running possessed right now and our line is playing pretty lights out. I'm most impressed by the diversity in the formations we have been running. So many different personnel packages to keep defenses off balance. Crabtree finally seems to be getting into better shape, caught some nice passes and made some guys miss. I hope he continues to improve in that regard. Five catches on five targets is a important stat, because it may mean he and Alex are developing some chemistry. VD had a terrible game, a fumble and dropped deep pass.

Braylon surprises me when he talks, for someone with the reputation he has he is a great teammate. He realizes what needs to be done and is going above and beyond in order to succeed. Hopefully he gets his first TD soon.

I really wish we wouldn't have played that last defensive series so soft. We made it seems as if the game was actually in reach for the Redskins. I don't remember seeing any more than a four man rush this game, I would like to see more pressure packages. Willis stands out this game, 14 tackles and two forced fumbles. Easily the defensive MVP of the game. I don't what is going on with Dashon Goldson, but it seems like he flips a coin and it determines whether he terrible or great. Today, we got great Dashon... he was hitting, covering, and even made a great play on the ball for a interception.

Next week against the Giants is going to be huge.

After the Colts 31-7 loss to the Falcons today in a game so embarrassing more Colts fans showed up wearing Andrew Luck jerseys, vice chairman Bill Polian went on the radio with Colts radio announcer Bob Lamey, as he normally does. At 0-9, you'd expect Bill Polian to be just a tad upset, and he was. However, more so than being upset at his players, coaches, and anyone else associated with this train wreck of the franchise, Bill Polian instead reserved his anger for nameless people he described as 'rats.'

Lamey set Polian up with a question along the lines, Everyone wants to give you advice and you'll get criticism. But, the team just needs to keep choppin wood, right?

Bill Polian responded with a 'yes,' but then went into a bit of a rant about how certain people who are critical are 'just rats.' 'Some people are just rats who lie about people.' Polian then went on to say that it's the job of the team to 'throw the rats in the sewer.'

I can't believe Colts' fans just accept that their GM got his job through pure nepotism. Do they have naked pictures of Irsay? I know he's not all there, but how can he go along with it?

I just hope karma kicks in and the Colts somehow don't get Luck. They are undermining the league by throwing their games, and shouldn't be rewarded for it.

Don't worry. I have little faith in Kubiak, and would have gone crazy when he gets his upcoming 3 yr extension for basically getting lucky that the rest of the division went in the crapper at the same time.

I should say that I hope the Texans win. I have friends and family who are fans, and I want them to be happy. But Kubiak still seems hell bent on proving he's some sort of offensive genius, even though Matt Schaub is basically Alex Smith right now.

You guys see that, right? How he shot put/guides those short passes? The beauty of San Fransisco is their coach knows what he has, and so they will keep running it even if they are down 14 pts. If Kubiak falls behind, it is throw throw throw.

Really upset that there's still communication issues in the secondary. Seems like most of the big gains always involves some obvious miscommunication rather than people just getting beat. Disappointing after a bye.

Aaron Rodgers is the best player in the NFL and the second best is not even close. Not even close.

Packers have been getting INTs all year even with the issues on D. That's nothing new. I wouldn't say he gifted them the INTs. Look at T Mon's int. Smart defensive play, marred by shitty miscommunication at other times.

The Chargers were able to score so damn many point because they had the rare combination of huge ToP advantage and a giant early deficit. I'm not making excuses for the Packers defense, it's not good, but the only reason that game was close is because the Chargers got an onside kick with 6 minutes left. If that is what it takes for good home teams to give the Packers a scare I could not be happier.

I love that the Packers went on the road across the country to play a division leader with an excellent offense and people are acting like they lost because the game was close.

I will take 11 more just like it....and I'm guessing that is exactly what I will get.

It's early so I can't tell if this is sarcasm. But no one can keep up with them, and the final score required some fluky things going the Chargers way.

The Giants would become a laughing stock as people remember the Eli trade with incredulity and a mocking disdain. Within five years of the Chargers sixth Super Bowl victory, the Giants would fold and the Jets would become the sole football team in New York. Coughlin would commit suicide in 2022. Well, auto-erotic asphyxiation gone bad but his buddy at the coroner's office would rule it a suicide to protect the family. Eli, trying to escape the limelight and burden of being the worst trade target in sporting history, would move to Maine with his new wife Tammy Brady and murder/suicide when Tammy reveals her penis.

I would much rather play the NFC West in the Superbowl.

Packers/Steelers SB would be a repeat of the 09 game when both of our defenses sucked and it just came down to who got the ball last.

I am still not over our performance on 3rd down to Flacco. Without Woodley our defense is very vulnerable to guys who can stretch the field. For the first time in a long time I have to say the Ravens defense is better than ours (probably the best in the leauge, and even they couldn't keep Ben under 350 yards).

That game was lost on third down. Flacco had 14 third down conversions, many of those from impossibly long distances. The Steelers only had a Pass rush generated from Harrison and Keisel. Not enough at all. Lebeau tried to compensate by throwing Harrison all over the field to get at Flacco, but one man can only do so much. I can't really say anything negative about the offense - They should have run the ball more maybe? But this was definitely a game that could have been won.

On Another note, last night was a perfect fucking example of why I hate these new rules and Roger Goodell. Clark hit a receiver over the middle - flag. Ray Lewis comes over the middle and hits Antonio Brown flush with his helmet - no flag. If you're going to enforce these idiotic rules, enforce them equally.

I was kind of surprised listening to Mully and Hanley this morning, but they were saying that G. Carimi might be shutdown for the year. not a good sign. JA has had horrible luck drafting offensive lineman in the first round. marc columbo got hurt right away and never played for the bears, chris williams is a bust, plus they drafted him knowing he had a preexisting back problem, and now the bear jew is hurt. fuck.

A couple of weeks ago, I asked if I should do more looking-back-at-history items with some perspective after the entry about what a tremendous draftsman Bill Walsh must have been to overcome the handicap of losing nine high draft choices in the horrible Jim Plunkett and O.J. Simpson trades that preceded his 49er stewardship. In email and Twitter responses, the answer was an overwhelming yes. So when I have something that I think merits the interest, I'll write about history.

I interviewed Ryan Leaf for my podcast the other day (iTunes or SI.com[/url), and it brought back lots of memories about the 1998 draft, when Peyton Manning was the first pick, by Indianapolis, and Leaf the second, by San Diego. And you know the rest. Manning's had a Hall of Fame career, and Leaf was a major bust in five seasons with San Diego, Tampa Bay and Dallas.

I got this reaction from a few of you about the Leaf Podcast: Who cares? He's irrelevant.

Not really. It's one of the most fascinating stories in recent football history, and with the fervor over the potential star-studded 2012 quarterback draft class, I thought I would take you back to the month before the 1998 draft. That May, I took a VHS tape of 30 plays from Manning's 1997 season with Tennessee and 30 plays from Leaf's last season with Washington State. I sat down with six men, independent of each other, and showed them the 60 plays, and asked each who they would pick.

The six: brilliant offensive innovator Sid Gillman (since deceased), coach Mike Shanahan, analyst and former quarterback Phil Simms, then-Tampa Bay personnel czar Jerry Angelo, former 49er coach Bill Walsh and UCLA coach Bob Toledo, who had faced both quarterbacks in their college careers.

Now people look back and wonder, How could the Colts have had a second thought about who to pick? It had to be Manning, all the way. In spring 1998, the new ESPN The Magazine had a big story about which quarterback would turn out better in the NFL and said about Leaf: "He possesses an 'I don't give a crap' attitude that has proven essential to Super Bowl quarterbacks from Stabler to McMahon to Favre. Come 2018, Ryan Leaf, not Manning, will be strutting up to a podium in Canton.' '' It's easy to shake your head at that now, but there was a real debate.

Points from my SI story the week before the 1998 draft that I find interesting today:

* Sid Gillman, 86, watching tape of Manning throwing a look-one-way-throw-the-other screen against Mississippi: "Now this is a pro quarterback. Is that a beautiful throw, or is that a beautiful throw? I'd draft this kid in a second."

* Walsh said he wouldn't take either player with the first pick, though he favored Manning ... and said he had a better arm than Johnny Unitas. "I don't see Favre or Elway. I see those guys on the next level. But Manning seems to be more pro-ready than Leaf ... I'd pick another top player, and then I'd take [Michigan quarterback] Brian Griese in the second round. I think he could have the tools to be special."

* Simms was incredulous when the question about Manning's questionable arm strength was posed. "His arm's plenty good. You know how many times Drew Bledsoe really aired it out last year? I mean, 50, 60 yards in the air? Five. Ten, maybe. In the NFL, you make your living throwing the intermediate pass, and look at how many good intermediate throws we're seeing Peyton make."

* The same red off-the-field flags the Colts saw about Leaf, Angelo saw as Leaf's weight ballooned to 261 at the NFL Scouting Combine. "I was at the combine for the weigh-in," said Angelo, "and it really surprised me. Here's what could be the biggest day of your life, the day you're going to expose yourself to your future employers for the first time, and you show up out of shape and overweight. To me, that's a signal. The quarterback has to be the CEO of your team. You have to trust him. I'd have some hard questions if that happened and we were going to pick him."

* Gillman on Leaf's pass drop and release: "He's way too slow. This is the age of the blitzer in the NFL. He'd better get coached out of that in a hurry."

* Angelo on Manning, sounding eerily prescient: "He'll handle the inferno of going to a 3-13 team. He's a sure player."

Interesting note from Leaf on the podcast: He regularly texts Manning, and he says Manning has been a big supporter of his through some of his worst times. Leaf had a golf-ball-sized tumor removed from the base of his brain in May, and later this month he'll begin six weeks of radiation to neutralize what couldn't be surgically removed. The tumor was benign.
