Manning at this point is much more valuable than Ben. The Colts are a miserable team right now, and people think they are great because of Manning.

The Steelers are a good team playing well above what they should have due to a combination of rededication to the running game, superb defensive coaching, and one of the better rookie QBs around in a long time. Roethlisberger alone isn't the reason they are winning, Manning alone is the reason why the Colts can even see .500

Look, no one QB can carry a team. You can say the same things about Manning. He has a great offensive line that gives him plenty of time to throw the ball, he has a effective running back to counter the blitz, and he has 3 great recievers. The fact of the matter is that you can't discount how important a quarterback is the entire team.

I grant you the fact that Roethlisberger plays for a far superior team then that of the Colts, but still it was Ben that turned the season around and he is responsble for this run more then anything else. Steelers fans know better than anyone else the value of a good QB, after having suffered through the likes of Brister and Stewart.

3 great recievers? Marv, no doubt. But Wayne and Stokley are definitely not "great"
Wayne might be able to be a #1 WR on a different team...a big maybe. Stokley, definitely not. He's a good slot reciever who gets open because Harrison and Wayne are absorbing most of the coverage.

Look, no one QB can carry a team.
Marino anyone? Manning is doing the same thing right now, though he has more weapons than Marino ever had.

And like I said, Ben is a great story....but Manning has had the best first half of any QB in NFL HISTORY here. And on pace to beat Marino's record. He IS the Colts.

I just disagree with you....I think he is carrying the team =)

and in other news...Texans are going to get raped.
The Texans will counter with a secondary that gave up plenty of big plays in a lopsided loss in Denver last week and ranks 25th overall in pass defense. And Houston probably will start two rookies, cornerback Dunta Robinson and strong safety Glenn Earl.

Robinson's started all year, and Glenn Earl started against Minnesota. We'll give up points, that's for sure. We just have to keep it to around 28 points. If we can do that, we can tear up Indy's defense. If they score 35, it's not gonna look good for Houston.

Philly contained the run last week the same way they have in the past, holding the steelers to under their season average on yards per carry allowed and doing a better job of it than the pats did.

Jim Johnson has never stressed rushing yards, for example. Third down efficiency and points are far more important.

Johnson's defenses have always given a bit against the run. No big deal, in Johnson's philosophy. Give up a 6-yard run here, a 3-yard run there, it was never his major point of emphasis.

Johnson wants to make an offense drive 80 yards in 13 plays. He figures his defense has been good enough to stop teams most of the times in those situations. The key for Johnson's defense is to get an offense in a third-and-long situation and then turn the defense loose. Use speed and scheme to force a turnover.

dude, that was against JEROME BETTIS. congrats, the Eagles barely held an old guy who's fading below the average Duce Staley gets per game.

If you run the ball almost 35 times in a game of course your going to get over 100 yards. Then on the other side you have the offense going 3 and out and not converting a single 3rd down the entire game. I couldnt have expected much more from the run defense. The problem was they put the points on the board and converted the 3rd downs with the passing game, every pass out of shotgun and with us mostly blitzing and getting burnt. I pointed it out earlier, it was not the run that beat us.

Edit: From what I remember the steelers had one rushing attempt on 3rd down, it was 3rd and 1 and they got stuffed.

You are approaching FMT levels of dillusion here. The Steelers ran for well over 200 yards with their starting running back out of the game. The Eagles are going through major defensive overhauls because of their poor performance last week.

They cannot stop the run. They did not stop the run.

TheDuce22

Allright, that doesnt change the fact that the steelers didnt convert a single 3rd down running the ball. Ill say it again, Rothlesburger passing out of the shotgun is what beat us.

TheDuce22 said:

Because they didn't have to. They had 25 first downs, 12 were obtained by rushing, 10 by passing and 3 were penalty gifts from the Eagles.

TheDuce22

But doesn't your defense "pride itself on stopping third and long"?

Thats my whole point. The only difference between the philly defense last sunday and the rest of the year is that they could not prevent Rothlesburger from converting 3rd downs. I have seen philly give up those kind of yards running and still win in a blowout. The key to the defense is 3rd downs.

No, the key to defense is *causing* long third down situations. Why do you suppose that is? Because EVERY team prides itself on stopping third and long! The chances of converting third and long against ANY defense in the NFL is abysmal.

Face facts. Your team got run over by a 55 year old, 500 pound "tailback." Hey, that's nothing to be ashamed of, my Vikings probably would have let him run for 300. :)

My point still stands. No QB, no matter how great they are can throw the ball without the O-line giving them time to throw it. They also can't suceed if their recievers can't get some seperation.

I think you really underestimate what Big Ben means to the Steelers. He has made so many big plays every game. Does he have to make as many plays as Payton to win a game? No, because he plays on a better team, but don't underestimate what Big Ben means to this team.

Even though Duce22 is insane for thinking the Eagles contained the Steelers run game, ask him how Ben killed the Eagles. Almost everytime they need a big play, Big Ben comes through, what else can you ask of the guy? Steelers don't play a passing game, they are trying to be balanced on both sides of the ball.

Oh, well of course the O-line is huge for a QB. I still stand by my point that if Manning isn't the QB the Colts are very lucky to have 2 wins this year.

I see your point with Ben, but I just don't think his few big plays a game are equal to an entire 8 games of greatness by Manning. Again, no ragging on Ben here. He's a stud. He's put the Steelers where they by all rights shouldn't be. However, I still believe the Steelers wouldn't be any worse than 5-3 without him.

We'll just have to agree to disagree here. And I don't think it helps that I'm also a Colts fan and you're a Steelers fan. I don't see us seeing eye to eye anytime soon =p
Maybe we'll have a rematch in the playoffs where the Colts actually do catch a hail mary. Then I want to see an immediate picture of Cowher's wife.

You are right, my love for the Steelers (and now Big Ben) definitely doesn't let me be objective. :D

Still, without Ben I would say the Steelers are 3-5 and maybe 2-6. NO WAY, the Steelers beat the Pats or Eagles without Ben.

Anyways, all of this is pointless. There are still 8 games left to play for every team, and it is way too early to make any predictions other then Ben is a Messiah and will put the final nail in the Pats coffin come playoff time. :D

The eagles have been one of the best at it because of their blitzes. The past 2 years they have given up almost 5 yards per carry and been in the middle to bottom of the nfl in total yards allowed per game. The reason they have allowed so few points despite that is because of what they do on 3rd down and in the red zone.

I just don't understand Cowher, really. Sometimes he's genius, sometimes he's shit...but he's never really been hard up for job security. Seems every time someone thinks "we should get rid of him" he has a great season.

You are approaching FMT levels of dillusion here.

lets not get out of control here ladies...

p.s. niners go 8-0 in the 2nd half of the season, make the playoffs at 9-7. rattay wins league mvp....

ahhh, those were the days, when i could say things like that and actually believe them. not with this years niners... or as i like to call them, the san francisco first pick in the 2005 draft.

the good news keeps piling on for us by the way. we had our 4th and 5th string CB's starting for us last week because our top 3 CB's are all out with season ending injuries (except jimmy williams, but he is also out), and now our 4th string CB went down in practice today and had to be carted off the field.

the niners losing sucks balls, but what pisses me off most is we DONT have to be 1-7. we have had a lot of close games. our problem is our offense will show up one game (seattle game) and our defense wont be there at all (seattle). then the next game our defense will show up (bears game) and our offense will be dog shit. or some games our defense will play great for a half (2nd half of falcons game) but our offense will play like shit in that half. all i want us to do is piece together a 60 minute complete win. i dont even feel like counting our 1 win because a) it was against the cardinals and b) there is no way in FUCK we should have won that game being down by 16 w/ 8 mins left.

got to stick it out though dudes. pisses me off to see all you a-holes and your "successful" teams headed for the playoffs, and im left out in the cold! you'll see once our players start to develop... you'll all see! then the niners attack machine will be back

duce how about we make a paypal bet?

i will bet you $20 paypal that if the eagles give up over 150 yards in a playoff game, they will lose that playoff game. put your money where your mouth is if you're so sure giving up rushing yards is overrated

The average per rush for the Steelers in both the Pats and the Eagles games was 4.5 yards a carry. Look at it accoring to NFL.com and Yahoo sports:

EDIT: Furthermore, the Vikings, Lions, Bears, and Ravens all averaged less than the Steelers:

Vikings 4.1

Lions 4.3

Bears 2.5

Ravens 4.2

Everybody forgot Brett Favre, as a QB who IS the team. I mean, I know he's getting a good pass protection, and a good running game (but not the best), but, remove him of the team, and they lose THEIR player and THEIR spiritual leader (like Ray Lewis in Baltimore)

Did you see Doug Pederson during the Giants game, it was awful. I don't wanna see the After-Favre-Era in Green Bay.

Why? A glorious time? WTF?

1- One of the best QB of all-time will retire.
2- The team, without a good QB, will suck, unless they can have a sensational defense in the future (that's possible) and a Ravens-like running game.

Price on Steeler QB's head

BEREA - Gerard Warren, aka "Big Money," is ready to give up some of it to hand rookie Ben Roethlisberger his first loss.

Warren, the Browns' four-year veteran defensive tackle, threatened the Pittsburgh Steelers young quarterback Thursday, vowing to "go across his head" and saying he didn't care if it cost him a $50,000 fine from the NFL.

"Hey, it'll be well worth it," Warren said. "They're protected in this league.

"Yeah, we're going across his head, regardless of cost. That's what we get paychecks for. You have to pay the cost to be the boss. You want to be the boss man on the field Sunday."

Asked to demonstrate what he was talking about, Warren cocked his elbow and raised and pointed to his forearm.

"One of these right here," he said.

"A forearm in the noggin?" he was asked.

"Right in the throat, how about that?" Warren said.

When former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Mark Brunell's name was brought up, Warren said: "Yeah, a Mark Brunell. I think he still remembers that now."

7.4 Giants
5.3 Browns
5.1 Panthers
4.5 Steelers
4.3 Lions
4.2 Ravens
4.1 Vikings
2.5 Bears

Who the hell is Gerrard Warren?"Big Money"? LMFAO.Win a couple games first Big Money, then we might take you seriously.

And ESPN stated last night that the Eagles are 27th in the league in run defense, just STFU trying to say they contained the run, sweet christ.

Who the hell is Gerrard Warren?"Big Money"?

My thought exactly when I read that. And even after they explain who he is in the article, I still don't know.

And the Eagles are so "not concerned" about their run D that Reid is going to make adjustments to their Dline and LBs this week. :lol

Yeah that's hilarious. The Panthers have 11 guys on IR this year, including ALL THREE running backs from training camp, an all-pro receiver/kick returner, and perhaps the best defensive tackle in the game. It's a total bitch.

To add insult to injury, our back-up back-up back-up running back rookie Joey Harris pulled his hamstring on Friday, and our fullback masquerading as a feature back Brad Hoover has back spasms. I have NO IDEA whose gonna run the ball tomorrow, although to be fair, behind our O-line we could have Jim Brown and not do shit. Oh yeah, our best linebacker got another concussion a couple of weeks ago. It's great to be a Panther fan. Hello 1-15 (again.)

I am telling you guys, if you have a chance to watch tomorrow's Texans/Colts game...throw out the defensive playbooks. This is gonna be a shootout. The over/under is set at 54. TAKE THE OVER! TAKE THE OVER!

Texans are 8 1/2 pt underdogs. I think they can cover, and outright win, as long as we can stop them from scoring over 30. Oh, and let's hope we can hold them under 250 yards, and 4.5 YPG, cause this team prides itself on stopping teams on 3rd down.
