I don't mean to diminish the sacrifice of Tillman, but the league has done enough to honor him.

Sorry, you mean the same Tillman who insisted that he shouldn't receive any publicity when he joined up, because he felt that he didn't deserve it any more than anyone else doing the same job, but whose opinions on this somehow got swept under the carpet after he wasn't around to complain?

I'd say they've done more than enough to honour him.

SIMMONS IS STEALING FMT'S JOKES!!!!!

Now he arrives at various L.A.-area sports bars at 9:15 a.m., hoarding seats for friends so they can crane their heads at a 45-degree angle to watch 18-inch TVs. Poor Sal is practically in shock -- he's like a dog that was being fed filet mignon for five years, then suddenly got switched back to Alpo. It's almost an American tragedy. If only ESPN's NFL team could have narrated his life over the past few weeks.

Maguire: "I'm gonna tell you somethin' right now ... you want to talk about a guy whose gambling has suffered this season? You want to talk about a guy whose life is in shambles right now?"

Theismann: "We had dinner with Sal on Friday night ... you just could not help but feel like this isn't affecting his gambling this season. I mean, here's a guy whose WHOLE LIFE revolved around Jimmy's house for 20 Sundays a year, and that was just taken away!"

Maguire: "I want you to watch this replay right now ... watch Sal's face when Jimmy says that the construction won't be finished for another few weeks because he wants to sound-proof the living room in case he ever has a karaoke party. Watch Sal's face, watch this right here, watch this -- BAM!!!!! You want to talk about a guy who looks like his whole world hasn't just been turned upside down?"

Theismann: "And while we're here, kudos go to Jimmy's construction team, including the guy in charge, Paco Morales, who has designed a SUPERB floor plan over these past few weeks."

Summerall: "Uh-oh ... there's a man down."

I'll edit this post if I find more interesting things or jokes.

I was just browsing around mlb.com, and i noticed that you could download full games for 3.95$

How cool is that? Why in the fuck doesn't the NFL do something similar? I would probably spend at least 50$ buying classic and current rams games. They could make so much money by offering this sort of service. Is there a particular reason they haven't yet? I'm guessing maybe it would violate their tv contracts or something..

what "classic" games have the rams ever had? possibly their bogus SB win vs. the titans, but i'd call that a fluke game more than a classic. oh wait, you're probably talking about Rats first ever start last year, yes that is a classic. On a related note, there will be an "instant" classic added to the collection this sunday when Rat torches your weak ass defense for a triple nickle! thats right ladies, 555 yards on the DOT! count it! :D

I wish NFL.com had live broadcasts like MLB.com has. 30 bucks a year for radio access? No thanks....I got broadband and I'd love for some live video feed.

The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
J. Lewis agrees to drug case plea deal

Jamal Lewis has reached a plea-bargain agreement in his drug conspiracy case under which the star Ravens running back will receive four to six months in prison - a term he almost certainly will not begin serving until after the football season is over, according to people familiar with the agreement.

The deal, reached with federal prosecutors earlier this week but not yet publicly announced, means that Lewis, last year's NFL Offensive Player of the Year, will not have to submit to a scheduled November trial in which he would have faced a career-ending sentence of at least 10 years if convicted on the principal charge.

Lewis' attorneys had long maintained that he was innocent of charges that he brokered a cocaine deal in 2000 for a friend in Atlanta. But they acknowledged that there was risk in going before a jury.

The NFL has been informed of the agreement.

U.S. District Judge Orinda D. Evans is expected to hold a public hearing on the deal late next week. Her approval is needed before the sentence can be finalized. But people familiar with the negotiations said they had little concern that she would reject the pact. Speaking on condition of anonymity, they suggested she knew about it in advance.

The agreement was reached after several weeks of talks. As the discussions moved forward, Lewis continued to play football. He started slowly but had his best game of the season last Sunday, rushing for 186 yards in a 23-9 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. Last year, he rushed for 2,066 yards, second-best in NFL history

While Lewis now knows his verdict from the legal system, the National Football League punishment is uncertain.

League officials declined to comment, but Lewis could face significant punishment - potentially a suspension of more than a year and/or an extensive fine - based on the league's substance-abuse policy.

Lewis, 25, has had at least two violations of the substance-abuse policy in his five-year NFL career. He was suspended without pay for four games in 2001, when he missed the season with a torn knee ligament.

Lewis said yesterday that he knew "nothing" of the plea-bargain negotiations. On Saturday at the Owings Mills practice facility, Lewis said, "My lawyers will call me and let me know what's going on if something is going on. They haven't called me and let me know anything."

Lewis indicated a plea deal is an option.

"That's part of the overall thing," he said when asked if he has discussed a deal with his lawyers. "It could be trial, it could be pleas."

His sentence is expected to be on the low end of four to six months and could include time in a halfway house, a source said.

Sentencing won't be formally done until after Angelo Jackson, a co-defendant in the case, has completed his trial. It is scheduled to begin Nov. 1. After that, there is an average six-week lag time for the Bureau of Prisons to process paperwork and make a prison assignment.

Because the plea agreement was not yet public last night, it was uncertain precisely which charge or charges Lewis would plead guilty to.

Don Samuel and Ed Garland, attorneys for Lewis, declined to comment. Patrick Crosby, a spokesman for the Atlanta-based U.S. attorney's office, also said he could not comment.

Ravens coach Brian Billick said Saturday that talk of a plea deal has at least brought the possibility of closure.

"As we move along, the more we can bring specific definition to it, the better it is both for him personally and for this team," Billick said.

The coach urged caution in judging Lewis.

"I would caution everybody before you cast judgment - and I know you will anyway - that you wait until all of the facts and all the proceedings," Billick said. "And it may take awhile."

The charges against Lewis date to June 2000 - before he began his NFL career - and stem from a drug investigation in an Atlanta housing project.

In the original February indictment, Lewis was charged with conspiring to possess with intent to distribute 5 kilograms of cocaine and using a cell phone in the commission of a drug crime.

Lewis was re-indicted in August. The indictment alleged Lewis introduced Jackson and two other men to a woman who turned out to be a confidential informant so that the three, but not Lewis, could buy cocaine from her.

According to the indictment, Lewis provided one of the men, Keaton Lamar Johnson, with the woman's phone number, and Johnson met with her a week later and tried to buy cocaine. The indictment alleges that Lewis encouraged the other man, Neyaunte Stallings, to buy cocaine from the woman.

Had the case gone to trial, the defense was expected to attack the credibility of the informant, who has an extensive criminal record.

In February, Lewis turned himself in to FBI officials and was released on $500,000 bond. He pleaded not guilty and said he wanted fans to know that he was innocent.

Wow... just... wow.... hopefully he'll get the low end like the article says... but geez what is that going to do for his conditioning going in to the season next fall? <sigh> Oh well at least it doesn't have to be a distraction anymore and he will hopefully plays his hardest the rest of this season.

Jesus fuck, don't you love the justice system as applied to famous and/or rich people?

"Yeah, I'm guilty Judge, but you know...going to jail now would be a huge inconvenience. You know I ran for 2000 yards last year? I can't just go to jail, that's not the way you follow up a near historic season. How about I come back in february and stay until minicamp or so?"

IND and Jax should be interesting.

I might watch a bit of PHI/CHI just to see if anything odd happens, or to watch the Eagles blow them out :)

Atlanta/Car looks to be the best match, with not much else good on at 4.

The evening game seems to be a stinker, but anything can happen. If the Rams can pass all over the Niners, and the Niners run all over the Rams, it could be good.

Do you guys ever think Vick will have a 300 yard passing game any time soon? How about a 300 yard passing 150 yard rushing game?

He hasn't come close yet, and once he settles in to the new offense he'll be facing better defensive teams. I doubt he'll pass for 300, and I don't see him rushing for 150 in addition even if he does. Best chance is probably week 11 against the Giants, but who knows how things will turn out.

Simmons got off some CLASSIC blasts against Joey Harrington this week :D

Speaking of the Carson Palmer Project, at the ESPN newsroom on Sunday, my buddy Gus and co-worker Jud came up with a new game: Pick a young QB, then try to figure out his maximum ceiling, using well-known QBs as the ceiling. For instance, I think we can all agree that the C.P.P. has some talent. If everything works out perfectly -- repeat: perfectly -- he could be another Dan Fouts, minus the cheesy beard. That's an absolute best-case scenario. Doesn't mean it will happen. But at least there's a 0.0003 percent chance.

Anyway, the QB who ignited this discussion was Joey Harrington, fresh off his ghastly performance against the Eagles (my first extended look at him). He's not quite fast enough to scramble away from pressure, doesn't have a cannon arm, isn't really that accurate ... I'm not sure what he does well. I just know that I'm never wagering on him against a good defense ever again. At his best, maybe he becomes the next Matt Hasselbeck. Gus was a little more discerning -- he thought Harrington could be the next Bubby Brister. At best. That led to this exchange:

Me: "Bubby Brister at best?"

Gus: "Hey, it's not necessarily a bad thing. Bubby had a couple of good years."

(If you're a Lions fan, there's a 70 percent chance you just threw up in your mouth.)

And his little diddy about Ronald Curry is good as well. I think that Simmons meant to say he was the greatest "high-school" athlete off all time, but the point was well made. Ronald Curry played hs football in the same conference in Virginia against Michael Vick, and a couple of years before Allen Iverson. It sounds funny to say, but Iverson was the considered the best QB of the are of all-time before Vick and Curry came along. Ronald Curry was considered superior to Michael Vick at that time, and was the number 1 rated HS prospect in the country as a QB, at ANY position. Coincidentally, Curry was also the number 1 basketball prospect in the country, as a PG. He went to UNC after a fierce recruiting battle with Virginia, and started as a QB as a freshman. He played basketball his freshman year as well, but usually only mop-up duty. I'll tell you what though, although he couldn't shoot, I've never seen a faster player in college that first year. His second year in football he shredded his achilles tendon (or hamstring, can't remember which), and he was never the same. He started at QB his sophmore and junior season, and split time with current UNC QB Darien Durant as a senior. He had a solid, if unspectacular college career in football. He started at PG as a senior for UNC, and I believe he helped lead UNC to their last Final Four (Bowser may be able to clarify better than I), but he wasn't a great basketball player without his blitzing speed. It's kind of cool that dispite all that he did make it to the NFL due to his athletic ability, and I wouldn't be surprised if Oakland had a few trick plays involving him passing. The dude had a good/very good arm, but he wasn't always the best game manager. Ronald Curry signed on with Oakland after going undrafted, and has been on the team the past two years I believe as a KR/PR.

****As a Duke fan it makes me SICK how much I know about this tarhole, and really, tarholes in general. It's a sick fascination I have, and should probably talk to a therapist about. I literally thought Curry would lead the tarholes to a NC in football (this was just after the Mack Brown era when they were actually pretty good, but the talent level dropped way off when Curry actually got there), and SEVERAL NC's in basketball.

Dude was hyped.

Running back Thomas Jones, after being labeled a bust in Arizona and Tampa Bay, looks like he is going to be a star in this league. -- Collinsworth

WHAAAAAAAA? Thomas Jones was hardly labeled a bust in Tampa. He actually did VERY well and got the bigger offer from the Bears (+ starting RB duties) due to his performance and took it. He was labelled a bust in Arizona though.

B. Johnson: 22 of 36 for 309 yards and 2 TD.

Funny thing is, if he had scored either one of those in the first two games we'd be 2-1 instead of 0-3....not that the blame is squarely on him or anything.

- I won't bore you with the tragedy that has become Miami Dolphins football. If it could get worse, they'd make a disaster flick after it. :( All I know is that if the Chefs really want Gordon for Johnson, that it's a step in the right direction. If it includes ANY draft picks, they can go fuck themselves. Word around here is that Edge wants to come play for use next year. I don't know why besides being the hometown boy. I'd love to see him back. The Colts will never be champs so long as Peyton is there to choke it up in the big game. A new start with the Fins is what Edge needs. :D But then who's gonna QB this running tragedy? Certainly not Feely or Fiedler. Is it possible to have the two worst QBs n the league battling for the a starting spot on the same team? Ugh, we really shoulda tried for Warner in the offseason. Another bonehead front office decision by the Fins. Oh, and Dan Lebatard can stop covering for Wanny. He hasn't been welcome down here since Day 1. We only tolerated him b/c he managed to tease us at the end of each season. Now that his late season collapse has come early, we don't need him anymore. Off with his head.

- Vick will throw for 300yds eventually. this season? I don't know if he has the talent around him. He needs a TO. Price is not that. At least he needs a good second option (hello Crumpler) to open up some passing lanes. As much as the big runs make up most of his VaTech highlight reel, Vick spent most of the time his freshman year sitting in the pocket launching long bombs to Andre Davis and his other receivers. He can hit guys who are open. He just needs the rest of the team to raise its play as well. Oh, and TJ said something I liked a few weeks back. The Falcons can win ANY game with Vick. He's a Matt Jones-kind of difference maker. The ultimate intangible. If he's on, there's just no stopping him. The stat sheet won't say anything special, but when they're overturning some of the bigger bandwagons on their way to the NFC Championship game this year, people will believe. Hmmm, did I mention I was a Vick whore too? :lol

PEACE.

Can somebody explain to me what the hell the Bengals D was thinking on that short yardage and goal defense?

Pittsburgh brings in Bettis, and stacks up with TE's.... the ball gets handed to Bettis and he walks through a huge hole in the center virtually untouched...

WTF? The only time Pitt has brought Bettis in this season is on short yardage and goal plays he's got 4 TD's and 15 yards this year.... so why would you NOT think this was simply going to be an up the middle rush play for Bettis?

Dumb, dumb, dumb.
