I don't think so. Jamal Lewis is going to run all over their defenders. And it looks like the rest of the league has figured out that KC's best and pretty much only receiver is also their TE. Baltimore has the speedy, athletic linebackers to cover Gonzalez.

The Chiefs are pretenders, yo!

I hope so... Chad Johnson had a f'n field day on McAllister on Sunday... <sigh> hopefully that was just an aberation. I see their defense is ranked pretty low and Ogden seems to be back to full strength so we SHOULD be able to give Jamal some good holes... they are saying that Deion might play Monday as well... which would be nice just to have that additional nickel security...

Chad Johnson is also one of the top receivers in the league. I'd put him in the Top 12. I don't think Quincy Morgan or Dennis Northcutt would qualify and I can't imagine the Ravens with their touted secondary let either of 'em run all over them.

Look at the Cowboys with a comparable secondary that's probably worse than the Ravens, and they held Garcia to a passer rating of 0.0!

Pat: "Montana back to pass, hits rice in stride for a 48 yard gain."

<That fat pig tight end from the rams catches a bogus 7 yard out pass>
Paul: I talked to fat pig on friday and i asked him i said to him "Does marc bulger have a rocket arm and are you going to catch a 7 yard out pass?" and he looked at me and he smiled and he said "dont get your briches in a gander old chum" that is confidence. marc bulger has instilled the confidence that this team needs to be successful.

Joe: "Well Paul the Rams can't pass the ball, they have no offensive line, for gods sake their tight end has a cast on his thumb! Terrible idea to pass
<bulger to big gay torry holt touchdown moments after above comment>

Now the key to that play was great blocking by the offensive line and the FOCUS that marc bulger has. You want to talk about composure, I had lunch with marc bulger on saturday night, and when the waiter said soup or salad he didn't panick, he surveyed the menu, made his reads, and came BACK to the waiter and asked "what is the soup of the day?" to which the waiter replied "potato soup". Marc ended up going with the salad"

omfg no amount of :lol's is sufficient. i'm telling you, FMT should be writing on same major online sports site.

Raiders suck; and you thinking your better then KC is even more laughable then the fact that you think you have a good team.

It's all about defense this year for the Raiders, something the Broncos won't even be ready for. Lelie and Smith will get shut down. Don't kid yourself, and we've already written off Quentin Griffin like the rest of the league. The only thing Jake Plummer can scramble from is his wedding day. And our Free Safety isn't going to get punched in the mouth by QBs like Drew Brees. Kerry Collins has faced Champ Bailey twice a year in recent years, so he's nothing new.

With all that said, you better win the AFC West. You better advance and represent the conference well instead of being the joker franchise with the overhyped head coach who won't win anything with out John Elway.

FMT finally concedes defeat! Yay! Although I'd rather see it happen when there's an actual QB, that's ok. So, will the Niners trade their #1 pick for a lower #1 and #2 to save money? :lol

B. Johnson: 22 of 36 for 309 yards and 2 TD.

Joe Theismann had this much to say when asked if the 9ers were the worst team in the NFL yesterday: "Yeah, if you look at it offensively and defensively."
...

And yet, I am actually going to pick them to win. The Rams are miserable, and Mike Martz is doing less with more than Dave in Miami has ever had. They're ready to implode, and nobody can go 0-16(except Miami), so I'm going with the 49ers.

I also want to see Baltimore lose, and Kansas City won't go 0-16, but they sure as hell aren't winning this week unless they have a giant turn-around. I think the two are similar in that they both have one glaring weakness, so I'll go with the home team.

And Ben Roethlisberger is going to jump right past the rookie of the year award and take home MVP. Just saying.

I think my reply said it all. Maybe I should have bolded the 2 TD part, considering he had none up until playing the Raiders.

<clueless stats question>
Where can I find the various rankings?

He got those 2 TDs on the second string front line. Even I admit that was bad, but that Tim Brown TD was practically a give away, and that Schroeder was an all out burn. But 11 sacks, 7 against the human statue in week 2, that's greatly improved from last year. I'm never said that the Raider defense was the best, I'm saying that Denver isn't going to be ready for a team that's vastly improved in this department. We're not expected to win, I think we'll still go 7-9 as of week 4, and Denver should win the division, but to smack you guys down at least once this season will make me smile all over.

And don't even start on defense, CP, we all know why you're 0-3 and losing to Denver, Carolina (lucky pass or not) and HOUSTON! Houston Texans! Watch this week's game, we're going to show you how to stomp this little expansion team. Your swiss cheese defense has given up 150 yards per game on the ground. DeShaun Foster is good, but not 174 yards good. Don't take your frustration out on the Raiders, since you're team could go 0-7 to start the season. :lol

Even Dr. Z is pitying the Bears:

:/

I'm still in disbelief that Grossman is out for the year. I WON'T BELIEVE IT! NEVER HAPPENED!! :(

The only benefit I can see that now that Grossman has some NFL experience ( A whoopping 6 games), he can now watch and learn on the sidelines and get better by having a better understanding, through experience, by what is going on in the field. Our season now rests in Thomas Jones hands. Bears are ranked 2nd in the NFC in rushing and 4th overall:

http://www.nfl.com/stats/teamsort/NFC/OFF-RUSHING/2004/regular

The only NFC team that is higher has a little known QB called Michael Vick running the offense....

yeah, nothing against the jags. their D is definitely legit...but if the Colts get even more than 20, the way the Jags O has looked this year...game over.
yeah, it's the colts D....but still. I like the Colts by at least a TD

Don't worry dude. Even with Quinn at QB we have a slight semblence of an offense. Actually, our offense has been pretty good this year. 12th overall. With Jones rushing we'll be in every game.

Brunell looked like a pro out there. If the refs don't give Cleveland free points like they gave Dallas, and Brunell takes this momentum into week 4, they'll be playing .500 ball and I can live with that.

Good that we agree on something. Raiders got torched for 300+ passing yards against one of the worst offenses in the league.

But 11 sacks, 7 against the human statue in week 2, that's greatly improved from last year.

And they only got two sacks against Tampa Bay's horrible oline...

I'm never said that the Raider defense was the best, I'm saying that Denver isn't going to be ready for a team that's vastly improved in this department. This is rediculous. It isn't the first game of the season. The Broncs know what they will be facing.

And don't even start on defense, CP, we all know why you're 0-3 and losing to Denver, Carolina (lucky pass or not) and HOUSTON! Houston Texans! So, because our defense is having problems I can't comment on any other team? See, the difference between you and I... I'm not delusional. I know our defense is having serious problems with the run game. You don't need to point that out to me like it has to be pointed out to you. Oakland has faced Pittsburg (#25 offense), Buffalo (#29 offense), and Tampa Bay (#26 offense). Come on, Oakland has faced offensive trash this year. Why don't we just wait and see how the Raiders D holds up against the Colts next week? Then we can proceed to talk to trash.

And to be fair. we lost to Houston on a freak 105 yard INT return.

CP: Vermiel lost that game.

In the 2nd quarter, the jerk gets cocky and runs on 4th and 2 at the 6. Stuffed, Texans ball.
Texans pass, incomplete. Run, 2nd and long....time out Chiefs? What?
First down Texans
Drive downfield

A 10-3 game turns into a 7-6 game.
Then tied at 21, the Texans took that game from you. They drove down field about 45 yards, set up for a FG, and nailed it from 49 yards, his second 49 yarder of the day. Not a chipshot by any means. Texans took that game, with a little help by Mr. Huggies.

The INT return was the ultimate factor. If we scored there the game was over.

Rather than 7-6, it would have been 10-3

Rather than 14-6, it would have been 17-3.
Rather than 14-14, it would have been 17-10.

The touchdown by Coleman would have only cut it to a 7 pt game. As bad as Coleman's INT was, turnovers happen. We saw that with Houston week 1 and 2. Something that could have been avoided (the Houston FG at the end of the half) and KC would have gotten a FG....and it's a 6 point turnaround. Those 6 points sealed it up early for Houston.

i thought OUR (49ers) offense was bad inside the 5 (we passed 3 straight times on a 1st and goal at the 3 in week 1, on 3rd down we threw an INT that was pretty much returned for a TD), but the chiefs take the cake. if i was the chiefs coach, and i had a first down anywhere inside the 10, i would be running priest holmes 4 straight times. inside the 5 yardline that should be a gimme touchdown.

Here we have Chris Collinworth's top 10 September surprises:

7. Lovie Smith: I am enjoying watching how much the Bears have improved under the direction of Smith, especially on the offensive side of the football. Running back Thomas Jones, after being labeled a bust in Arizona and Tampa Bay, looks like he is going to be a star in this league. The Bears were on their way to a really good season until the injury to quarterback Rex Grossman. Now I am not so sure.

We will beat the iggles on Sunday. Unfortunately Urlacher is gonna be out again and this is one of the games where we would need him most to run down McNabb.

Plummer won't challenge NFL rule on honoring Tillman

September 30, 2004
DENVER (AP) -- Denver Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer must remove the No. 40 decal he's worn on the back of his helmet since training camp that honors former Arizona Cardinals teammate Pat Tillman.

Tillman, the former safety who walked away from the NFL to join the U.S. Army Rangers and fight in Afghanistan, was killed in action in April.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Wednesday the league's long-standing policy prohibits personal messages on uniforms or helmets. Violators could face fines of $5,000.

``We do that because we need a consistent rule. You can't just pick and choose and say one message is OK but another isn't. Where would you draw the line?'' Aiello said.

The league has honored Tillman several times this year, including at the NFL draft, at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony in August, and on the second week of the season when all NFL players wore Tillman's number on their helmets.

``I want to honor Pat the best I can. I honor Pat every day, every game in my own private way,'' Plummer said. ``I'm trying to get something done that won't infringe upon the NFL logo and uniform codes.

``I'm not going to fight the NFL,'' he said. ``I'm looking for some kind of compromise.''

Plummer and Tillman became close friends after playing together at Arizona State and later with the Cardinals. Plummer said he has been wearing a small No. 40 on the back of his helmet since training camp.

The Cardinals will display Tillman's number on their helmets every game this season, but individual players, such as Plummer, are not allowed to do so.

eff that. i say if any or every player wants to wear a 40 on their helmet, especially someone who was his long-time teammate like plummer, let them, no question.

Chiefs' Hall sits out with painful lip

By DOUG TUCKER, AP Sports Writer
September 30, 2004

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Dante Hall, Kansas City's All-Pro kick returner, could only stand on the sideline at practice on Thursday, icing his painfully infected lower lip.

He needed stitches after being injured early in Sunday's 24-21 loss to Houston that dropped the Chiefs to 0-3.

``His lip was infected, pretty well puffed up,'' coach Dick Vermeil said. ``It hurt to even jog, bouncing that lip.''

Vermeil said Hall was taking antibiotics and would probably be ready for Monday night's game at Baltimore, where Kansas City won 17-10 last year with the help of a 97-yard kickoff return by Hall.

Not once in a coaching career that began in 1959 has Vermeil ever had a player miss time with an infected lip.

``We always talk about, 'Do something for the first time,''' said Vermeil. ``That's it.''

There was also good news on the injury front for the Chiefs as defensive end Vonnie Holliday and cornerback William Bartee both practiced at full speed and expect to be ready.

``We'll see what happens. But I feel good,'' Holliday said. ``We'll see how the week goes.''

Another first for Vermeil is starting a season 0-3. Everyone understands a fourth straight loss would almost certainly doom the Chiefs to also-ran status following last year's 13-3 campaign.

``You've got to love the challenge,'' defensive end Eric Hicks said. ``Why not make it the hardest possible stage you could have to get your first win? We're going to go in there fully expecting to win. We need to win. We've got to shut down No. 31 to do it.''

No. 31 is Jamal Lewis, last year's NFL rushing champion who was held to a relatively minor output of 115 yards by Kansas City a year ago. But a year ago the Chiefs did not have a run defense that had already given up career-best days to two running backs in three games.

``We were able to contain him last year and not let him get on a roll,'' Hicks said. ``He had about 116 yards rushing. I don't think we can let that happen again. We need to try to hold him to 70 or 80 and stay in our gap.''

The Chiefs are practicing with Lewis in mind.

``He's a very strong runner,'' linebacker Monty Beisel said. ``We don't want to create seams. That's the one thing we're working on this week is shutting down the run lanes and keeping their offensive line from sifting up through our second level.''

After taking two days off, the Chiefs came back to work Thursday with a high-spirited practice.

``Judging by the practice we just had, you'd never know we were 0-3,'' Hicks said. ``You'd think we were 3-0. You attribute that to Coach Vermeil and the coaching staff. They always have us up and ready to go. He must be the best motivational speaker in the world because we're always up for a challenge.''

The loss to Houston could have been particularly demoralizing. The Texans are just in their third year, they had lost six in a row and the Chiefs outplayed them in just about every statistical category.

``But they came back and worked real hard, which didn't surprise me,'' Vermeil said. ``I expected them to. They want to, and, as I said all along, that's the kind of people we have. They went to work. Does that guarantee anything? No. But I know they'll work hard tomorrow. And we'll end up being a little better Monday night.''

PAINFUL LIP?

I've got to go with the league on this one:
``We do that because we need a consistent rule. You can't just pick and choose and say one message is OK but another isn't. Where would you draw the line?'' Aiello said.

Can any player honor another NFL player who should died tragically by wearing his number? What if a good player friend from college who didn't play in the NFL should die, can you wear his number to remember him? What if your best friend Joe Blow (who never touched a football in his life) dies, can you wear JB on your helmet?

You've got to draw the line somewhere. I don't mean to diminish the sacrifice of Tillman, but the league has done enough to honor him. They've always had a policy of consistency, and more than any other league they've held the line against ads on the uniforms, excessive logos, personal statements, and "He Hate Me" kind of crap. Plummer needs to accept the league's decision.

umm, if the NFL is going to use said player as a giant PR tool, and never even bring him up until he's dead, yes. Did anyone ever hear of Tillman until he died? Of course not. If you're gonna have a week and honor him like they did, let every NFL player leave the 40 on their helmet all year, not just the team he played for.

Plummer needs to accept the league's decision.

...if you actually read the article, you'd realize he is.

Woman sues Packers' Davenport

October 1, 2004
MIAMI (AP) -- A woman sued Green Bay Packers fullback Najeh Davenport, saying he invaded her privacy by breaking into her dorm room and defecating in her closet.

Mary McCarthy was seeking more than $15,000 in damages for emotional distress and invasion of privacy in a lawsuit filed Thursday in Florida Circuit Court.

Criminal charges were settled in October 2002 when Davenport agreed to perform community service. He denied breaking into the Barry University dormitory.

According to police, Davenport entered a dorm room at the small Catholic university in suburban Miami in the early morning hours of April 1.

Mary McCarthy, asleep in the room, told police she was startled awake by a strange sound and saw a man squatting in her closet. The man, later identified as Davenport, had defecated in her laundry basket, police said.

The suit said Davenport's conduct was ``so outrageous in character and so extreme in degree as to go beyond all possible bounds of decency and, further, can only be deemed atrocious and utterly intolerable in a civilized community.''

McCarthy's attorney and Davenport's agent did not immediately return phone messages Friday from The Associated Press seeking comment.
