In the NHL's statement, they said the IOC put the condition that participation in 2022 also required participation in 2018.
Derp, I need to learn to read.
This is going to be a game of chicken then. Does the IOC value the NHL presence that the Winter Olympics more than the NHL value showcasing its game and players in China?

So Russia should be favorites now. I haven't looked at the NCAA talent for next year but that is where US chances will lie.

Disappointing. I get the business argument for the league, but the Olympics have given us some amazing hockey over the years. The World Cup has shown it doesn't hold a candle to the Olympics.
I don't mind the olympics, it's the only time where you see the best talent in the world playing a meaningful game instead of garbage games for All star games, WJC and the crappy World Cup or whatever the NHL calls it now.
It was the best hockey with the best talent. Those Canada US games past 2 meetings were just all skill and speed.

US was a shitshow for Sochi. The roster was awful and snubbed a few players.
They can go play in the KHL if they want.
