I've probably read the same articles. I just think he's a case where we're seeing his best years now. He's a PP specialist with mobility issues that are going to only get worse as he ages. Hopefully the team can get a couple of good picks for him.

When I've seen him play, he's been pretty good for the most part. Phaneuf and Gardiner are not playing well, and Richards has also won a Cup.

Ideally, I want the Leafs to get picks. I said above I'm afraid of them taking on salary, but would be interested to see Richards in a Leafs jersey if it has to happen.

perhaps but his utility has always been in spite of his skating, not because of it. not saying we should give him 7x6 or something, but he should be useful for a few years. I think he is a solid #2 and if Rielly becomes our #1 like we all hope, there's your top pair for the next while. replacing him will not be easy especially given how poor the Leafs are on the right side.

the crux of the point here is Franson is better than Phaneuf. we probably can't sign Franson without dealing Phaneuf.

edit: BTW his good analytics disprove the PP specialist notion. analytics are 5v5.

At the deadline, the Leafs were in a playoff spot so selling off guys like Kulemin, MacArthur or Raymond were never going to happen.

I would trade Gardiner for ROR too, though with slightly more trepidation. Not because ROR isn't worth Gardiner, but Jakey is signed for 4 mil long term, while ROR is a wild card after next year.
