Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch |OT|

Got my 3rd stone last night. It was late at night and I ended up going to the ghost ship last since that's a little more of a hassle. I figured I'd just get there and then save it at the beginning of the dungeon (didn't even save it right before I encountered the ship) but of course that wasn't meant to be. :lol Fortunately the two bosses were pretty easy and I didn't die.

My Mighty Mite is level 35 or 36 now. Decided to wait until I got Slice 'n' Dice before picking his final form.. probably won't ever use it due to the prohibitive mana cost but oh well.

I passed the game around the high 50s or low 60s for levels. Pretty much my battles would be as you said:

Catastroceros -> Earsplitter -> Sling Stone -> Attack a bit to see how crazy the boss attacks would be -> Puss in Boats to keep things classy -> Oliver spells -> Catastroceros once again.

My Puss in Boats was being used by Swaine, so I'd often have him on the field at the same time as my Catastroceros.

Finished the game, easily Level-5's best work to date. Great graphics, great sound, solid gameplay and a story that's actually good. The combat is simple but works very well and it has the usual collect'em stuff to keep folks just grinding away. The combat isn't too hard but it's tuned enough that you can try a challenge run or something to make it interesting, I think.

Kept Mitey for quite awhile but he eventually lagged behind Puss in Boats so I swapped to him as my main familiar, not that I needed to use him so much, the late game spells make Olivier a powerhouse to make up for the relatively weak ones early on. Gogo was ridiculously buff for most of the game though and a Whombat I got earlier and made into a Captain Whom was really buff.

Okay, could anyone explain what just happened in Hamelin?
Did the mist make them go back in time? Was the emperor with the moustache The Great Sage? How did they know they went back in time that quickly? Why did they go back in time exactly? (I guess this will be explained later on though) Or is Swaine from the future or something?

It feels like I missed something major.

The game does a great job of tying everything up. No worries, a lot of people were confused. :)

I felt the same way at this part in the game. By the end of the arc, it makes a whole lot more sense.

If you catch a Familiar you already have, how does it work with default nicknames? Like if I catch another Mite will the default name be Mitey 2 or something?

Ah, yes. I understand things a little bit better now.

Just about to hit 50 hours and in the final area of the game (literally right before the final story boss) and had a strange occurrence.

I was fighting an enemy party made up of an Empress, Mech. Tombstone and Bird Knight and I got the Knight into Charm status. Right as I was in the process of completing Serenade, the Empress cast its Confusion spell. I guess both 'hit' at the same time (because I've had Serenade get cancelled before) and the fight suddenly ended. I get my XP screen and then a prompt that I caught all three of the enemies. No idea if this was a convenient glitch or some kind of feature that I've just been unaware of the first 50 hours, but it was nice to get all 3 in one swoop.

I'm thinking about buying this game, since I heard it is sort of like Dragon Quest. I'm looking for some advice from you guys.

1) Is this game anything like Dragon Quest 8?

2) Is this game going to be riddled with DLC or is it done as is? (I ask this because if there is planned DLC, I will NOT buy it now)

I have my reservations about the game since the aesthetic is not my thing (8 year old magician boy with a bunch of weak looking stuffed animals as summons), but if the gameplay is there (i.e. Dragon Questish) and there will be no DLC, then I may just give this a go.

Advice? Recommendations? PS3 only owner here. Thanks!

Help!

Denny's nightmare: I gatewayed to this place (can't get back because I've talked to Myrtle), I have no healing or MP items, my party's been fine so far, just killed the dragon without a problem, but I can't get Denny's nightmare below half. I've tried arrows of light, physical attacks. This was stupid on my part, I know, but is there anything I can do?

It's like Dragon Quest 8 in the sense that Level 5 worked on both games. The cauldron system is similar, as is the monster-recruiting system. The battle system lets you move around, so in that respect it's more like Tales, but you still use the menus. There aren't random battles. You run into every enemy (except bosses) that you encounter.

Ni No Kuni doesn't feel nearly as epic with respect to the game world, but the graphics are top notch and everything is really well animated.

Hmm...what else, Ni No Kuni is a lot easier, save for a few parts. DQ8 is probably one of my favorite games so it's hard to compare. Ni No Kuni is still very enjoyable.

1)Graphics are the biggest thing they have in common. Otherwise not really that much. You do combat with ''pokemons'' you capture and evolve ect. instead of only your basic party for example. Otherwise it is very much like a traditional classic JRPG.

2) There won't be any story DLC or anything. There are the few DLC bonus pokemons you get from preorders or for free if you are in the EU, dunno about US. No major DLC tho, especially since the game has been out for a good while in Japan and the development team has moved on.

Edit:
as is the monster-recruiting system
Wait what? DQ8 had monster recruiting? I don't remember that at all :/.

Can you tame more than one of the same familiar? I'm reaching for Familiarologist and just wondering if I need to keep constant attention to exactly which familiars I'm taming. So far it hasn't let me tame the same creature twice, but I just need a heads up if I does

Yep, you can keep an army of the same one if you really wanted.

Got the platinum trophy last night. I love Level 5 RPGs. DQ8, Rogue Galaxy and Ni No Kuni have all been wonderful. This is my favorite game on the PS3.

I love how boss battles come out of the blue in this game
I never expected to battle Shadar who wiped my entire team within minutes, but I managed to beat him the 2nd time.
Currently in the Fairy Godmother's Belly...which I exited in order to level up to have a better chance against the boss, whom I never saw coming. Annoying bastard wasted my party worse than Shadar =_=
Anyone got any tips against this boss?

Here's how you beat this boss. Do some major damage to it, and wait for the babies to come out. Use "Cut Loose" or another area attack to repeatedly damage and kill the babies, then refocus your attacks on the Mama.

The Royal Jelly himself isn't too hard. What worked for me was, just hitting hard at him with my Mitey and constantly switching from all-out-defence and all-out-attack. Then when he's at about 50% health he brings his minons, and that was the perfect chance to land some more hits on him without worrying about the little ones. When he regains consciousness I'll switch to all-out-defence and warcry my mitey and have him cut-loose attack a couple times so the entire team gets hit. After that it's just basically repeat. The important thing is having a familiar that can attack multiple enemies because when the Jelly brings his little ones there is little chance of just attacking one by one. Mitey's cut loose was really the prominent attack for that fight.

This video helped me out a lot too : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tba3X3eiWP8

Also, (this is important) if you choose to leave the babies alone, your party will get surrounded and won't be able to help you. It's best to kill them.

Finally had my strategy guide turn up (after months waiting). Any of you folks with a NA copy want the Gold Hurly familiar code?

Sure, I'll take it if no one else wants it. :)

Anyways just came in to say that I just got to Hamelin and I'm loving this game. DQ8 was one of my favorite RPG's from the PS2 generation and this feels like a spiritual sequel to that. Add in the Studio Ghibli art and the impeccable production values and it's just great stuff. I'm even having fun coming up with strategies for some of the tougher boss battles.

I don't know if all my gaming mojo has left me completely, but this game seems to have some ridiculous difficulty spikes. I've reached Hamelin, and the fucking Porco Rosso boss battle is doing me in. I'm seriously close to snapping the disc in half, and I can't be bothered with insane amount of grinding. :(

Any hints on how to pass that fucking boss?

Are you playing on easy difficulty? That might help too.

I never had to grind on normal but I did all the sidequests. Dunno what else to say, get better equipment and try to learn when best to defend. Also use items.

I can't stop playing this game. I'm 38 hours in and having a complete blast, if this keeps up I think NNK will top Xenoblade and P4 for me (just played those two fairly recently). I'm so glad I bought this game when it was still $60, anything less would have felt wrong.

I have a question about postgame

Do we ever get to see the lake that's supposed to be where nevemore is?

What's amazing me the most about this game so far is the pacing. Nothing feels like filler, nothing seems to exist "just because." Exciting new areas and elements are introduced at exactly the right time, and nothing every seems to overstay its welcome (be it dungeons, continents, cities, or whatever). Even the story doesn't seem to dip at anytime which is an incredible accomplishment for any RPG as far as I'm concerned. It's really impressive stuff.

I;m currently on the post game stuff working on trophies, and I got a couple familiar questions:

Mandragorer: Mendragorer or Tundragorer

Idler: All-Seeing Idler or Evil Idler

These are not important as I'm just working on familiar trophies, but I was curious.

Thanks.

I think I somehow changed something without knowing it. I can't see an enemy's life bar over their head anymore. Anybody know how to get it back?

Well I can now access the Casino, gimme your tips to get the best goods from there GAF!

Also I can no upgrade my Mite to its final form...but I don't like either final form a lot =/
I mean I could evolve him into a DynaMite, but it'd feel awkward for a badass looking warrior like him to do that adorable squeel when you feed him a chocolate...
Plus there's his stats resetting.

Platoon or whatever is the easiest game to earn all the cash you need in the game. AI is pretty predictable so you can win as much as you want once you understand how it works.
