Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch |OT|

I knew Richard Honeywood worked on this. It just seemed way too much like his style to be a coincidence. I'm pretty pleased about that.

It always amazes when people just pull out industry names in regards to JRPGs and localization. I'm a big fan of the genre but I've never done my homework on localization staff (outside of Nich M. & 8-4) or voice over talent.

Guess I'm not as big a fan as I thought I was. =(

Edit: Holy Shit! This man is responsible for the Dragon Quest VIII localization. *bow*

I won't have a second of time for this game for at least three months, but I feel like I probably should buy it soon (within the next month). Not much of a production run I assume.

Yeah. He's quite a legend and has worked on lots of big games, but DQ8 is my favorite, and I think you can really see a correlation between that and NNK's translation.

It should probably get another pressing... a lot of shops are selling out of their copies, it seems.

Very beginning when you're looking for a wand while still in your world.

Is that section of the game really prone to bugs or something? Weird... were you able to restart and continue from where you left off?

Well, so much for that theory. Then I subscribe to the base game + Japanese DLC / localization data school of thought. Though why you wouldn't repack that is a mystery.
I'm guessing it must have something to do with however they released the all-in-one. Either some technical limitation in how it was originally coded, or perhaps to deliberately give an option to players.

... This might be interesting for anyone with the bandwidth or insanity to check: can the smaller download, see if you can JUST install the big one and if it basically makes the game the same as the original Japanese release. Probably better to experiment for someone that has both physical and digital I guess.

Wouldn't surprise me if NB specifically sought him out recognizing they might be able to tap into the DQVIII market with this, and going as far as they could.

He's apparently been a part of Level-5's localization team for a few years now, so I don't think he was 'sought out' necessarily.

I'm fighting the urge to buy this; shouldn't really be spending money on full priced games (yes I know it's $5 off on PSN) right now. But it looks amazing. Loved the demo the second time around.

Got the regular game in addition to the special edition which seems like a great idea right now as who knows when I'm getting the special edition. About an hour in so far and loving it. Although one very tiny thing I'm annoyed about is that I left the game on the select difficulty screen for a while before I started and that apparently counts as game time as the game clock already has me at over 4 hours despite only playing for little more than an hour. Doesn't bother me enough that I want to go back and do it over though.

Managed to snag a copy. Best Buy and Future Shop were both sold out (the guy at Best Buy said they got 40 copies in), and I grabbed the last one at Wal-Mart (where they also commented on how popular it had been. I didn't think I'd have so much trouble tracking down a copy on release day!

Just played the first hour of the game with my 6 and 2 year old daughters watching, we were all transfixed by this amazing game. So beautiful and the music and voices are great as well. My kids love Drippy!
Sounds like my night. Both my kids loved it. My son even commented on the soundtrack. Such an amazing game for the senses.

Is this game as hard as the gameinformer review says it is?

Any difference in buying the psn or retail version as far as load times? If I buy the retail version and install will it load just as fast if I bought the psn version?

I'm glad that it seems to be selling well. Let's hope that'll send a message to plublishers that there's still a market for these kind of games!

Ps3 only? That's a shame, dont have one of those. Too bad too, because this game looks phenomenal.

Exactly, this game would do well on Steam and 360. The japanese suits here honestly just seem like they have no f'ing clue what they are doing as far as marketing this game. Sure, it is no blockbuster but you need to get this to a wide audience.

If friggin' Ys can get to Steam then so can a game with Miyazaki's name attached to it. This guy was taken in by Pixar as a guru and master of his art. Heck, Howl's has better English voice acting than the Japanese track to my ears. How is this game not being released on different platforms? or are they waiting a bit to see the reception? Even a Dark Souls type port would be relevant to me and would be bought in a second on Steam for 60 dollars. (goes to petition)

Honestly, how did that Dark Souls petition get started? Why and the hell not one for this game?

I would try the 7gb alone 1st, i believe that is the game in japanese and the 17gb one are the movies and stuff in different languajes. Well a wild guess D:

Who knows. Forgot to pause 2 file download and installation is so fuckin slow. 6% in 10 minutes lol

Legend is an under statement. Dragon Quest I'd my favorite game in the series as well as my favorite localized JRPGS of all time! I already saw the similarities between NNK & DQ8 as they share Level 5. But now that I know that both localizations were directed by Honeywood... Wow.

So I finally got my first loss in the game.
I'm not sure who said this but I'm now experiencing the bad AI partner too. They aren't terribly bad, but it's confusing the things they do. The boss dropped a full heal orb and my partner with almost no health doesn't pick it up. I'm sitting their waiting for them to pick it up but it just disappeared (If I knew they wouldn't pick it up, I would've picked it up). Also my partner kinda uses up their MP faster then ever. Usually when they take 1 hit that barely harms them they cast heal. I have them set on "do whatever" but it's still confusing what they do.

So next time i try this boss I'm gonna just switch back and forth between partners for better survivability. Either that or just switch whenever I see them have low HP.

Or... you could be happy the game saw a localization at all and stop port begging.

I ADORE this game! 2 1/2 hours in and I'm loving it. So charming and fun. The music is unbelievable. The art is gorgeous and the monster designs are awesome. So happy right now.

Miyazaki had no involvement with this game whatsoever.

Really? You really think they don't know what they're doing? I think you couldn't be more wrong. And Ys made it to Steam because those games were originally developed for PC. Level 5 is an average sized Japanese developer and publisher. They make games for their Japanese market first and foremost. Be thankful it's even in English.

Studio Ghibli = Miyazaki to just about everyone that knows what this man has done for the animation industry. Whether you like it or not HIS studio was involved meaning HE was involved whether directly or not. It's basically his artstyle all over the place. Pretty obvious if you ask me. So his producer was the main dude. Who cares.

Ah, well it doesn't really matter as they still saw fit to release Ys on Steam in nice versions. And Dark Souls followed with a massive success on PC. I have no idea where people are going with half this stuff. So now they have done all they can to promote this game and that is that. Please. They can do a lot more to get this game out. Just being on two systems isn't enough for a game like this.

It's like a Ghibli film being released only on DVD or something. No thanks. I have faith this game can get its due.

And who the hell is port begging? And who the hell would I be begging to in a fucking GAF thread lofl? As if anybody here is going to get this game to Steam. Absolutely obnoxious. I didn't beg one damn time for anything. I said this game deserves to be on other systems and responded to somebody else.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Kind of slightly off topic but isn't Falcom like one of the only big developers in Japan that makes good non-doujin PC games?

They're probably the only developer who develops for PC first and foremost that's not eroge.

But they seem to be moving away from PCs and heading to consoles (and eventually bringing them to PCs after the console release).

Er... It goes something like this: L5 approached Ghibli to make a game with them, Miyazaki was hesitant (he advocated anti-videogames or something) but Ghibli didn't have anything to do at that time (or little to do) so they proceeded working with L5. Miyazaki himself had no involvment, but his staff were.

Actually, the style for this game is Yoshiyuki Momose's and a lot of people who think of a "Ghibli style" are probably thinking of Katsuya Kondo's which is said to be 'quintessential Ghibli'. Ghibli does not necessarily mean Miyazaki. There are a handful of films that they release that Miyazaki does not even touch.

Yeah, I have read all about this game. It's his studio. It's his artists who do work that pretty much he or another approves. Sure, fine, maybe he doesn't get around to everything anymore. If this was Broshooter No Kuni I don't think you would see Ghibli's name on it. Why? because he wouldn't let it happen. So in a way he still has a lot of influence and I bet he made a huge influence on all his artists and colleagues.

His producer I guess was the main guy. Toshio Suzuki.

But his cofounder and the man himself certainly have approval on all these things.

Okay, have a problem with me saying his name was attached to it? Well, then tell that to the media who mentions his name in almost every article about the game. I guess I didn't say it right. I know he didn't make the game. I meant his name was attached to the product because it is his studio.

Toshio was the one approached by Level-5, I think. He seems to be the one with more of an open mind since Miyazaki seems to absolutely hate modern technology, lol.

I had honestly never even heard of this game until accidentally clicking on this thread.

I have now just finished ordering it and should be receiving it soon. This is exactly my type of game.

You are abrasive as hell. Take it down a notch, won't you?

Very true. I haven't even liked a Ghibli film since Howl's.... the one Ebert gave two and half stars lol. My favorite of his haha. Ponyo I absolutely could not stand. I have no idea who is the main dude behind their stuff anymore but it still has the charm and style of some of his older films to me at least.

I didn't think so. Sorry if that is how you feel. I just don't like people calling me out for port begging when I am honestly just making conversation. I don't need some ridiculous ban for something I am not even doing. I don't need to comment on it anymore it's all fine as far as I am concerned. When the price drops I might even pick this up as it seems so many seem to enjoy the heck out of it. I didn't hate the demo or anything. It's just after so much time on Steam it gets confusing as to what you are bothered by and what you are okay with. Take Steam out and I still felt the same way 3 years ago about my phat PS3 RIP.
